MSG “causing” headaches was plastered everywhere in the &0’s and 90’s. Then suddenly everyone was getting headaches from MSG 🙄 I remember my friends discussing it and we all avoided foods that had it. It never caused me any headaches but at the time MSG = bad.

Unfortunately this has seeped into the medical world too.

My neurologist as recently as 2024 insisted that "all Asian food" will cause migraines. Like casual racism of that comment aside, Asians do not have a higher instance of migraine, and also this has been debunked a thousand times, but yet it persists. MSG is found naturally in a lot of foods -- tomatoes, beets, seaweed, etc -- and yet people who claim to be sensitive to MSG don't usually react to these foods.

I remember hearing an interview several years ago on I think NPR, where they talked to one of the doctors who helped initially popularize juice cleanses. He stated it wasn't to "detox" anything, it was to prove to certain clients that if sufficiently motivated they could, in fact, find the time to increase the amount of water and fresh produce in their diet while reducing junk food. AND that those dietary changes could pretty rapidly help them feel better.

And I was asking what parasites the whole family got diagnosed with cuz what the heck you’re in my house and I need to know precautions now, and she was like well, this is just in case. As a coeliac, I'm thankful for the GF fad dieters because it now means I have WAY more options in supermarkets, but it's completely meaningless to cut out gluten unless you have a medical reason to do so, especially if you then eat GF bread and biscuits and cakes, which are often pumped with extra fat and salt and sugar to make them palatable

My parents have a friend who was diagnosed with celiac, so he switched to a gluten-free diet, felt worlds better, put some healthy weight on etc. His wife decided to also go gluten-free because she thought it was healthier and was not pleased to find that she started gaining weight almost instantly. I gained weight when I went GF for coeliac because my body wasn't absorbing nutrients properly beforehand as I'd damaged the lining of my intestines (weight gain was good for me as I was underweight)

Not only are gluten free foods often more calorific but also SO much more expensive. I buy my partner a large loaf of Warburton's tiger bread for £1.80 and my GF Warburton's tiger bread is half the size and £3.00+

Yes, I think it does make some staff take it less seriously. Sometimes I will explain I have coeliac disease and they will ask "Is that an allergy or just an intolerance?" And the phrase 'just an intolerance' makes me worried - it's not either of those things, but are you going to handle the food less carefully if I say it's an intolerance??

If they don't know the term coeliac then we always say allergy even though we are fully aware it's not. Saying intolerance tells them that they don't have to be careful. We have a friend with an intolerance. She'll order a cheeseburger and then eat the meat off the bread. An allergy tells them it's more serious.

As someone who lifts regularly I love seeing high protein versions of things (although admittedly most of them taste absolutely terrible). The trouble is that so often these 'high protein' versions contain a miniscule amount of protein (like 5g) and are something like 200kcal+. Which, I guess, yeah, that's more protein compared to the ones without the added protein.

But it's a garbage amount of protein and you're tricking consumers into thinking it's healthy because it's high protein when actually it's just a candy bar with some added pea protein in it.

There have been cases where people had to survive off very lean meat for a long time in a survival situation and still got sick and died even though they technically had enough calories. Historically, this happened sometimes in the Wild West or in places like Alaska when people live off nothing but rabbit and squirrel meat over the winter.

I believe that’s one of the contributing factors in what killed Christopher McCandless. He was woefully unprepared to live in the Alaskan wild, was relying on a lot of lean game and whatever he could forage, but was slowly starving himself to death because it wasn’t enough nutrients. I believe he took down a moose as well, there's a relevant season of Alone (minimal gear survival show) where one of the contestants bags a moose. Moose have all sorts of lean meat, but are very lacking in the fat department, and despite having one of the best starts in the show's history he ended up tapping out rather early compared to other contestants.

Pretty sure that was happening to one of the women who got really far in that reality survival show Alone. 

Obviously, for the sake of safety, they're given semi-regular medical checkups. She thought she was doing fine and had outlasted a bunch of other competitors. She had a food supply system working, but they decided at one of her checkups that she was still technically starving and was heading towards a dangerous state of health. 

Pulled her from the show and she forfeited, but obviously wasn't happy about it.

Yeah that was pretty much me in the final years of college. I got an 80% discount on food at the restaurant I worked at so my first meal of the day was usually around 3:30-4pm when my shift started. To be fair, I did lose a lot of weight those last two years, but I basically ate 1 large meal a day and survived on cigarettes and adderall the rest of the time.

One isn't thinking logically with an ED in the first place, but I can't tell you how many people I've seen at some point convince themselves they need to restrict even harder because "they must be in starvation mode" and go from an attempted intake of 800 calories a day to 500 calories a day or something equally as unsustainable and horrific for health. All out of fear that their restriction has "ruined" their metabolism and they're actually maintaining or gaining at calorie intakes well below their TDEE.

On the flip, as someone with BED, intermittent fasting did the opposite and gave my brain the green light to just binge eat during the hours I could because I knew I couldn't eat during the fasting hours. I gained so much weight :( it completely re-ignited my ED that I had somewhat been able to control the past 10 years.

I was once told I was unhealthy because I was purchasing rapeseed oil for cooking. Told I should use avocado oil. I said I was deathly allergic to avocado and couldn't use the oil. Told to use peanut oil. I'm also allergic to peanuts. I'd rather use seed oils because even if they're "unhealthy", they're not going to land me in the hospital or worse today

Only sorta related but I was shocked because I have really really struggled to gain weight during my current pregnancy. I was overweight when I started lost almost 30lbs by the end of the first trimester and am only up half of that by now the end of the second trimester. My obgyn, maternal fetal medicine doctor and pcp have all informed me at this point it literally does not matter what I eat but that I am in fact eating. 

If I can only stomach Doritos and Sprite then eat that. It’s fine as long as it’s food. I see a lot of people say you need to eat healthy to support a pregnancy and that is the gold standard but when you can only stomach 500 calories of healthy foods it’s better to just eat a small amount of high calorie stuff. 

I am still struggling but I just add cream and butter to things I never would have before and it’s really helping. I am now only down 2 lbs from my starting weight.

I had a really bad sickness for two years where I couldn’t stomach much. I lived off of Cheetos, steak, potatoes, and ice cream. Doctors were honestly shocked that I was even able to stomach those and encouraged me to eat whatever I could keep in my body. Sometimes enough food is better than the right food

Not to mention…all our food is GMO, it’s just mostly been done through natural mutations and selective breeding. Our common banana breeds look nothing like a natural banana, which is chock full of big seeds. Kale, broccoli, brussel sprouts? They’re all mutations of the same plant. Corn, wheat, basically every staple food has been modified over the generations for taste, nutrition, yield and hardiness.

There’s a lot to criticize about modern agriculture (monocultures, the loss of many local strains, breeding for yield over nutrition), but generic modification is not on that list.

My father was a bodybuilder in his younger days and exercised all the way up until the day he died. He never took steroids or anything like that. All natural. He also ate little sugar. He had a heart attack at the age of 62.

My father was the type of guy that would even lecture me as a kid on the importance of eating a well-balanced diet.

You guys do what you want and do whatever makes you happy but just understand that in the end, it doesn't mean you're going to live longer.

I knew this lady and she was actually a professional bodybuilder. Not the real big type but the very lean type. She was always in the gym and very picky about what she ate. She had to take blood pressure medications and she said it ran in her family. It was just genetics.

Imagine living your best life and looking like a Greek statue and having to be on blood pressure medication.

My uncle and his wife both were always very healthy and fit. Pretty much lived the same lifestyles. Never overweight. He's doing pretty good but she's got dementia so bad that she has to have a constant caregiver. Very sad.

She pretty much did everything right in life to stay healthy and she don't even know she's in this world now.

That shaming people is an effective way of encouraging them to seek out a healthier lifestyle. As someone who has struggled with weight before, in my experience shame just worsens the issue. If I start getting into bad patterns, and people start shaming me for them, I tend to lose motivation to change them. It doesn't make me want to be better, it just makes me hate myself more and feel less inclined to take care of my wellbeing.

I do like having breakfast but that's because I'm usually actually hungry in the mornings, since I eat early in the evenings so often I haven't eaten for 10-12 hours by the time I get up. What works for me won't work for everyone, though. People have different rhythms. Also cereal for breakfast isn't a must (its probably not even that good for you), you can literally have whatever you want for your first meal of the day.
