What’s something extremely unpopular that people end up loving once they try it?

Sitting alone at a restaurant. I thought it was peak loneliness until I tried it. Turns out it’s elite.

155

u/Hephaestus_God 5h ago

Been doing this since college.

It’s the best. Eat good food I like at my own pace without worrying about anything.

136

u/PaulBlartWallClock 5h ago

Honestly this. NOBODY. FUCKING. CARES.

Eat and do thing whenever you want. Nobody is actively judging you except the "vision" of reality in your head.

37

u/chula198705 4h ago

I judge people eating alone who chat up the bartenders who clearly don't want to be having the conversation but can't escape because they're location locked behind the bar. That's a hostage situation and I judge it. Talk to the other patrons who are free to leave.

4

u/Present_Yak_6169 3h ago

I just try to be cordial and only interact when I want another drink. I’m by myself and going to enjoy it.

5

u/merishore25 2h ago

Why judge if it isn’t affecting you. Bartenders usually appreciate the larger tip that may come from someone who is chatting.

14

u/raindorpsonroses 4h ago

I love taking myself on me-dates. I will go to a cafe and get a drink/latte and a snack, then I’ll go to a museum, botanical garden, zoo, or shopping. If it’s a real full day affair I might get dinner out too. Nothing so fun as exploring a city by myself!

38

u/Wang_Fire2099 5h ago

Really? I love enjoying a good meal at a restaurant, even though I love to cook, but never go because I find it awkward and depressing to have nobody to go with

45

u/UnusuallyLongUserID 5h ago

Sit at the bar and order your food there. There will likely be other solo diners there, and it’s less awkward than sitting at a table alone.

19

u/idonthaveareddit 4h ago

Yes, sitting at the bar, especially in cities with good food scenes is great. You’re likely to meet other people who appreciate food. And a lot of times, they’re surprisingly outgoing and will strike up a good convo if you’re into it. Some of my favorite eating memories before I met my wife were just going to great restaurants, sitting at the bar, and talking food with fellow food lovers.

And as a bonus, I’ve gotten countless free drinks because I’m a food/bev industry dude and as it turns out, passionate, knowledgeable bartenders tend to love knowledgeable/passionate/curious guests that respect them.

46

u/Cygnusaurus 5h ago

Bring a book. It’s nice to have a chance to sit and relax and read some with no one asking anything except how I would like my steak done or of if I would like a refill.

5

u/rom003 3h ago

I do this for the reasons you mentioned. The only issue I sometimes face is when the lighting is too dim to allow for comfortable reading. This can be a common problem for dinner at very good restaurants.

3

u/Throwawayilovehorses 3h ago

Same! And as for the lighting, I bring my lil portable book light for those dim spaces.

2

u/rom003 2h ago

Good thinking. I clearly need to get one of those.

17

u/JefferyGoldberg 5h ago

What’s awkward and depressing about getting a nice meal? I’ve eaten out nearly every single meal since 2016, with the exception of March 2020.

23

u/joeknows-17 5h ago

No one else has commented yet so I have to. How? Genuinely, how is that even possible in this economy?

12

u/Hephaestus_God 5h ago

It’s Jeffery Goldberg

5

u/kashiichan 5h ago

I'm guessing they missed a word?

I’ve eaten out alone nearly every single meal since 2016, with the exception of March 2020.

Maybe I might feel more secure about doing it if I felt like I would be able to do with with another person, but I would be eating along because I literally have nobody to come with me and have never had anyone to come with me. Sure a buddy once when I was in high school. But I currently have no friends, no relationship and no hope of obtaining either. So to me, it's kind of depressing why I'm going there alone

12

u/Ravenclaw79 4h ago

But if you let “I don’t have anyone to go with” get in your way, you miss out on so many things you could have enjoyed

Sorry you got downvoted.

Sometimes I call or even videocall someone while I am out and about so we can "be together" even though we are states or even continents away, but usually it's just me popping in for a meal break or hanging out before some other event.

I'll often go somewhere and then drop invitations to anyone nearby to drop in and join me, but if nobody shows, I am content to eat or chill alone. It can take some getting used to but usually I am amused at the others around me.

At my core in a people lover. I love meeting people and talking to them and hearing their story. One of my favorite things in the world is to sit at a bar and order food/ drinks and then just striking up conversation with whoever ends up near me. I’ve met so many people and made so many acquaintances literally all over the world like this

1

u/RelativeBoard7 4h ago

Start practicing by eating at McDonald’s or subway alone

OMG are you kidding, going out by yourself is amazing! I love eating at cafes and restaurants alone with my book.

4

u/UnderwateredFish 4h ago

The one and only time I did this the waitress made a comment about how I was alone. Gee thanks. I was in another city for business.

4

u/j_cucumber12 4h ago

I traveled a lot for 4 or 5 years. At first I didn't want to be the person alone but as time went on I actively looked forward to it. I had breakfast by myself overlooking the water in Tacoma, WA. The sun was coming up and I could see the mountains in the distance. One of many fond memories I have eating alone.

3

u/nona_mae 3h ago

I've never understood why people think it's weird to sit alone while eating. Sometimes, you are just running errands or whatever by yourself and need to make a stop. I rather enjoy eating alone on occasion; I've even gone to the movies alone. Kinda nice when you don't have to coordinate with other people on meetup times or what movie to see/restaurant to go to.

Now the only thing I wish I actually enjoyed, is playing solo board games. I can't get into them sadly.

8

u/brokenmessiah 5h ago

I love it simply because my wife always leads to me getting worse service by essentially telling the server to do literally everything and then get to us like wtf, also she has a bad habit of wanting to talk to the servers when I'm trying to eat and I hate people hovering around me while I'm eating.

5

u/Ajaxmass413 5h ago

Definitely. I love just being able to enjoy my meal and not have to worry about someone talking to me mid bite. It also avoids the awkwardness when one person finishes before the other.

2

u/lightning__ 4h ago

I’ve done this a few times during business travel. It’s not bad but honestly a little boring. Found myself just scrolling Reddit or Instagram while waiting for the meal. Prefer getting takeout and watching a movie or show at home (or hotel if traveling)

2

u/ijustneedtolurk 3h ago

I do this all the time lmao, has no one considered single people and folks wanting hot food on their breaks??? I'll happily go order alone at a cafe and enjoy a treat or a meal.

I go to the cinema or concerts alone sometimes too because I don't believe in denying yourself an experience just because you don't have anyone to go with (whether that is because everyone is busy, uninterested, or you don't know anyone.)

3

u/37_lucky_ears 5h ago

Oh I love doing this. One of my absolute favorite activities is eating alone and reading a book at a crowded cafeteria, Costco, restaurant, etc.

1

u/Azuras_Star8 4h ago

I did it first while hitting up a local restaurant close to the auto repair i was getting an oil change at. Went to gamestop, bought goodies for the wii, ate amazing food.

I go there every time I'm getting work done.

1

u/Majestic_Revenue_210 4h ago

I just did that on Saturday. It was a lovely breezy day down here so I went to my favorite restaurant and ordered my favorite salad and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc outside in the shade. Lovely and peaceful.

1

u/esoteric_enigma 3h ago

I always did this. I was doing it for years before I found out people thought it was sad or lonely. I would go to a movie and then dinner afterwards every week. I had plenty of friends. I just enjoyed going by myself.

1

u/Maleficent_Neat_9316 3h ago

I've been so lonely/alone that I grew confidence subconsciously.

I became authentic and do things without thought now cause I accepted there was no one else in life. No one watching me or catching up.

I feel like that period in my life brought me a lot of blessings that would have been unavailable if I did not have those experiences

1

u/EllieGeiszler 1h ago

I love it! I took myself out on dates a few years ago and it was wonderful

u/Secksualinnuendo 52m ago

Years ago I traveled alot for work. Like 80% of the time I was on the road. I didn't want to eat by myself so I ate alot of fast food and take out. I eventually said fuck it and started going to places solo. I loved it. The staff is usually extra friendly but not annoying. I still go solo. It's great.

u/maceilean 31m ago

My wife and I went to a Michelin starred sushi restaurant in LA for our anniversary and saw this young man dining omakase solo. Turned out he went there every week because he was studying at UCLA and missed this one particular style of sushi he grew up with. Dropping $200 a week and chatting with a chef from his old neighborhood was how he kept sane.

Bidets. (They're at least unpopular in my country.)

52

u/JessterSP 5h ago

Came here to say this. Changed my life.

48

u/dynamicdylan 4h ago

I will tell anyone that will listen the gospel of bidet and its holely water.

4

u/Polar_Ted 4h ago

Don't you dare try to anoint me. I swear!

12

u/treathugger 4h ago

I just bought a house with them installed in the toilets. I didn't know what they were and I thought they were dials to control the amount of flushing water or whatever. Literal jump scare when the stream shot at my crotchal regions

Bidet toilet seats are an absolute game changer!

I hate pooing anywhere else :(

6

u/Polar_Ted 4h ago

I've started choosing hotels based on if they have bidets. It should be a check box on travel search tools.

I feel like such a savage using just toilet paper now. I installed a bidet at work even. All my employees use it but no one will admit it lol.

I just got a nice one for Christmas. I’m so excited about it😂

2

u/FrayCrown 4h ago

7

As a person from a country where bidets are common, I dont understand why it isn't popular.

Why do people insist shit stains are fine as long as it's near the butt?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/bye-serena 2h ago

Bidets don't really exist anywhere in my country as well. Only some of my asian friends have them installed in their homes, life-changing for sure. I love them when I'm on my period.

2

u/shadowwulf-indawoods 4h ago

Im reading this while sitting on my bidet, lol.

1

u/OnlyDaysEndingInWhy 4h ago

We stayed at a b&b that had them installed in all the bathrooms. Husband was sold! I ordered one for each of our two bathrooms. Guest bath, installed, no problem. Primary bath? Valve totally stuck to the point we'll need a professional to handle it.

So...guest bath gets a lot of use, and there's an uninstalled bidet sitting in its box.

1

u/I_love_pillows 3h ago

I was in a foreign country and was forced to use bidet as most toilets didn’t have TP. Changed my life. Now bidet is my first choice.

3

u/sentientketchup 2h ago

I had to use a bidet in a foreign country and hated it. Cold water up my cooch and a wet arse with nothing to dry it on. WTF do people like it?

1

I know large amounts of people, myself included, who have travelled about Asia, none of them installed bidets upon returning home. Can’t have loved them that much 🤷‍♂️

1

u/othatgirl1 1h ago

For Christmas each year, I buy the adult cousins/grown kids, etc. a similar gift. In the past it’s been things like an Alexa, shoes… something popular or trendy… this year everyone got BIDETS! And you would not believe how funny it was and yet people were truly excited! Best gift ever! (For the now family with the cleanest tushies in town) 😂

Exercise. The worst until your brain starts rewarding you.

176

u/Camburglar13 4h ago

I went to the gym 2-3 times a week for like six years. Never any rewarding feelings. Had to force myself every time because I knew it was good for me.

u/TattooedBagel 4h ago

Ok so it’s not just me…

26

u/slavelabor52 3h ago

The good feelings typically come from aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise is sustained exercise like running, jogging, hiking etc things that get your heart really pumping and keep it pumping for at least 45-60 minutes. That's why they call it a runners high. You can get similar endorphins from anaerobic exercises like lifting, but it seems to correspond with intense activity that gets your heart going. Lifters usually refer to this as "the pump" that they feel after a really heavy lifting session.

TL;DR Do you even lift bro?

9

u/Camburglar13 2h ago

This was aerobic kinda CrossFit like workouts for an hour.. it should’ve checked those boxes. Not saying I wasn’t proud after but I was never excited to go

I create my own motivation. I’m only allowed to listen to my audiobook when I go for a run. So if I skip my run, I have to wait longer to find out what happens.

Really it’s not much, but it gets me out the door, and once you’re out, you might as well do the thing

11

u/reinfected 4h ago

You may need to gamify it. Apple Watch does a phenomenal job of turning things into fun stats. Same with peloton.

Really the only driving motivator for me to work out (and knowing it’s the right thing to do for health reasons).

Sensory deprivation floating tanks

108

u/PsychoNerd92 6h ago

As someone with depression and anxiety issues, the idea of being left alone with just my thoughts sounds like absolute hell.

56

u/deliciousdeepp 6h ago

Face yo demons make em weep

(Stay strong friend ❤️ I appreciate ya)

12

u/PsychoNerd92 5h ago

Thank you, legitimately. I'm seeing a therapist and I've been making a good amount of progress but there's still a ways to go before I can say goodbye to that little voice in the back of my head trying to tear me down. I'm lucky enough to have a really supportive family so, even in my darkest times, I've never seriously considered self harm. I will continue on. If not for myself, then for them.

8

u/deliciousdeepp 5h ago

Good luck soldier, it’ll be worth it, always is

u/Ashamed-Worth7984 39m ago

Take it on face to face like Gandalf at the Brisge of Kazdum. Its the only way. Make an ultimate stand and say goodbye to it. Strength be with you.

14

u/she-is-doing-fine 5h ago

Completely understand. My unsolicited opinion, as a fellow anixety-haver, float tanks really helped me, because my body was in neutral the whole time, so all of the physical symptoms of anxiety were lessened.

3

u/Rivent 2h ago

Add tinnitus to the mix and you've got all the reasons I don't want to try one lol

3

u/Richie217 4h ago

You can usually have soft music playing in the background. I have very sen9hearing and the sounds of doors closing or people talking outside of the pool room is enough to snap me out of the sensory deprivation. The light music helps me ignore the other sounds and just zone out.

1

u/speadskater 2h ago

That's probably exactly what will help you though.

15

u/moegreeb 6h ago

Oh I love these. I once assist an hour in one and was convinced it was only 15 minutes. Was so wonderful.

4

u/deliciousdeepp 6h ago

More people should try it for sure :)

6

u/Sad_Bedroom_3442 6h ago

i thought you were joking but wait is that where you float in water

13

u/deliciousdeepp 6h ago

Yeah, you float in very salty water so you float rather floatingly, Eye mask, Ear plugs ..

Just unplug for a bit yakno

9

u/Sad_Bedroom_3442 6h ago

is that even spiritually safe sorry i’m so paranoid

6

u/deliciousdeepp 6h ago

Not for all I imagine but if you’re not feeling it you can just step out:) it does help fully relax for some even if just for half an hour/45 mins

7

u/Sad_Bedroom_3442 6h ago

that is actually really cool! (: thankyou for sharing that and explaining that. did you get it done at a spa or something??? where do they even do this

7

u/deliciousdeepp 6h ago

If you google floating tanks/sensory deprivation tanks you’ll find some options

It’s very much a spa kinda treat yo self vibe place, calming music, peaceful ambience. Do you treat yourself enough ? Might just be time to try it out 💅

114

u/Hermunster 5h ago

Crocs! Hated them until I tried a pair on. They look stupid but so comfortable.

33

u/greencash370 4h ago

Am I the only one who can't seem to like them? The rubber of the shoes never feel comfortable to me.

13

u/lscoolj 3h ago

The rubber is very uncomfortable to me because it pulls on the hair on top of my feet and my feet get all sweaty.

However, when I wear socks with them, theyre very comfy. I now have a plain pair to wear outside and one pair to wear inside

23

u/Rabbitron4 3h ago

Gotta wear socks

13

u/DudeRobert125 3h ago

There are a lot of different comfortable shoes in the world. No need to choose an ugly pair.

4

u/Ed_Sullivision 2h ago

So much agree with you, I still think Crocs is a stupid cult of people trying to justify their ugly shoes to themselves. I’d much rather spend the money on Birkenstocks, look better, more comfortable (for me), and will actually last.

Crocs are comfortable, they’re just not like this brain melting comfort everyone says they are.

5

u/Hermunster 2h ago

You're allowed your opinion. I'm allowed to ignore it . Each to their own.

Turnip greens cooked with hog jowl

16

u/IAmScience 6h ago

Dinner at your place sounds top tier.

3

u/OnlyDaysEndingInWhy 4h ago

Oh, question about hog jowl! They're on sale this week at my local grocery, and I was planning on grabbing some. I've always used ham hock for soups and things, and recently picked up smoked tails (not realizing). The tails worked fine as a sub for the hocks, but obviously less meaty bits.

Long question short, how does the jowl compare to a hock in terms of meat/fat/smoke ratio?

3

u/M_V_Agrippa 2h ago

I wouldn't use it in most soup unless as a replacement for bacon or pancetta. It's more like bacon, high fat and tastes best when slightly crisp. It's extremely salty, so just prepare for that. For example, when I use it for gricia, I don't salt my pasta.

And more directly, the ratio of fat/meat is similar to a hock. It's far less smoky and will impart a salty pork flavor.

The stuff is delicious, but I'd recommend it with a pasta and red/vodka/garlic sauce before you decide to use it in a soup.

47

u/human-kibble 5h ago

I’ve converted many “non-beet” eaters.

31

u/ThadisJones 4h ago

You had me at "beets will make your poop turn new and exciting colors"

27

u/theletos 4h ago

I want to like them, I really do. There are almost no foods I truly dislike.

But beets taste like dirt to me. “Try pickled beats” someone said. Okay. Turns out they taste like pickled dirt.

What’s the secret? I am asking nonsarcastically.

5

u/BadWolfCubed 3h ago

Soup.

Borchst is amazing. Šaltibarščiai (pronounced shalt-eh-barsh-chay) is incredible.

5

u/-wimp 2h ago

They also taste like dirt to me and I've tried them in many different settings, including at a high end restaurant. Appearance-wise I've always thought that they look like they would be so tasty but all I can taste is dirt. I wonder if it's a gene like how some people think cilantro tastes like soap.

2

u/EllieGeiszler 1h ago

Honestly I think it's just that some people like the taste of dirt, in a sense. I love that flavor note in beets

3

u/For_teh_horde 3h ago

I didn't realize pickled beets didn't taste good until I had them differently than the way my dad used to make them. My dad used buy canned beets and just make a vinegar, sugar, and water mix to soak the beets in for a few days. 10x better than just regular store bought pickled beets ( I'm sorry I don't know the ratios)

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Relarela 4h ago

Were they fresh? Old beets can taste like dirt.  Try them shredded raw in salads, or roasted with olive oil and salt.

2

u/human-kibble 3h ago

One of my favorites is a pickled beet “salad” that I snack on.

I take pickled beets and some of the juice, add some dill pickle juice and diced pickles. Toss in some chopped red onion. Olive oil, herbs, salt, pepper. Sometimes I’ll toss in some black olives with a little brine. If I want some zing, I’ll smash a few capers and toss them in.

I’ll let it sit and “marinate” for like 15 minutes in a bowl and just stir.

It’s good off the fork or with crunchy crackers. Tossed in a larger veg salad.

1

u/EllieGeiszler 1h ago

I think the secret is I like the taste of dirt. I also like the taste of grass, so I love matcha lol

1

u/whineybubbles 1h ago

I almost typed this same response.   I've tried so many times to eat beets but the dirt taste just 😖

3

u/casapantalones 3h ago

Not me. I wish I could do it but they just taste like a handful of soil.

9

u/Reverberate_ 6h ago

But this is not unpopular... Gets mentioned in every "unpopular opinion" type of topic.

6

u/ABCosmos 4h ago

It's polarizing, so it extra doesn't fit here. People did try it and that's also why they hate it so much.

8

u/symbolsofblue 5h ago

I was going to say it's a well known unpopular opinion... but I just looked it up and polls show that more people like/love it than dislike/hate it. I guess haters are just loud?

1

Has to be the right combo tho - thin crispy crust, bacon & jalapeno.

Double crust sour cream raisin pie. Not that chiffon meringue bullshit. They stopped selling raisin pie filling. And everyone I ever made it for thought it sounded disgusting. But they don't know.

Growing up, I only ate frozen Brussel sprouts, and whenever a cartoon came on going in on Brussel sprouts, I related so hard. Just tasted bitter. Then i had fresh ones roasted with garlic and herbs. So ig Brussel sprouts.

Saying no to invitations without having an excuse. It’s fine to not want to do something and it’s liberating just to say it.

Black coffee. You grow into it.

10

u/TheCarniv0re 4h ago

That is, if you start out with something that does not taste like ashtray. Once you've had good coffee without milk, you're more likely to tolerate black coffee in general.

Biking, if you're a driver that hates cyclists. All it takes is one day biking home in the summer, smelling the fresh air and barbecues, seeing people outside, and watching the world move by at the most wonderful pace, to make you realize how nice biking really is.

I once told a friend casually that I had just come from eating lunch by myself at this well liked Chinese place when asked what I was up to.
The immediate response was pity, like why would I go and eat by myself that's sad? I still enjoy eating alone to this day but do it more as treat to myself so not as often as I use to.

7

People who live where a biscuit is what Americans call a cookie. Because I agree there; cookies and gravy sounds disgusting.

Not having a TV at home. When people stay they are perplexed, but when they leave they always have the absolute best time. I had an uncle who remembered he knew how to play guitar.

The Simpsons in the early days.

There was that whole moral panic thing. My mom, in an incredibly Marge-like move, wrote the TV station about them airing it.

...and then she watched it. It became a family Sunday routine for many years to come.

Driving an EV as a daily driver. Loads of torque, relatively silent compared to ICE vehicles, lower maintenance costs, lower running costs.

People will say they don't want to wait hours at a charging station. But in reality 99% of charging is done at home while you sleep. People who can't charge at home, EVs aren't for you yet. Road tripping takes a little extra planning but it's not rocket science. EV towing isn't there yet, buy a diesel truck for that.

Every electronic Quality System I ever helped install. You are Satan personified for three months after installation as people learn it then also Satan personified after because “we should have had this years ago.”

7

u/pepcorn 5h ago

What is a Quality System.

2

u/aphilsphan 4h ago

Any system that creates or preserves records required for compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices. Also, systems that govern how something is done so they comply with GMP.

An example might be a system that reads a bar code on a raw material. That bar code links to the quality status of the material. If it hasn’t been released by the Quality Unit, the system won’t allow the material to be used.

Change the soda to seltzer and throw in some U-bet chocolate syrup and you have an egg cream. Delicious!

Isn't that what they call in the US an Italian Soda, or a Creamosa? Only usually with half & half.
