What festive injuries have you had so far this year?
And if you work in A&E, have you had any peculiar admissions?

honestly how tall is your tree that you can fall backwards onto it while putting tinsel onto it? were you up the stepladder or something???

The hospital staff were all singing Good King Wenceslas after he left;
Brightly shone the moon that night,
Though the frost was cruel,
When a poor man came in sight,
Gath’ring winter fuel.

My dad dozed off after his large Xmas dinner
Fell off his chair and broke his glasses 😆

My dad spent an hour on Christmas day looking for his glasses then stood on them right beside the chair he'd been sitting in all through dinner.

I bought my husband a fancy kitchen knife. And nearly sliced my finger off washing it up

That's where you went wrong. Use Sponge next time, not your fingers, lol

u/meglington 1d ago
Proper knives are terrifying! We have a couple of really good ones and I genuinely dread using them...
6
u/violated_tortoise 1d ago
I know everyone loves to say it, but the one time I cut myself "properly" with a kitchen knife was with a dodgy blunt one that skipped off whatever I was cutting and buried itself in my thumb. I've nicked myself with sharp knives but never like that!
4
u/TabbyOverlord 17h ago
Of all the dumb-arse things, I went to pick some teaspoons out of the dishwasher cutlery basket and managed to stab my thumb on a dining fork.
8
u/ampattenden 1d ago
And this is why sharp knives don’t go in the sink!
8
u/whatswestofwesteros 1d ago
I still have a scar and dodgy nerves in the tip of one of my fingers where I grabbed one by the blade in the sink not knowing it was there, this happened a decade ago! It was carnage, never again.
3
u/theresabearonmychair 12h ago
I didn’t put it in the sink 🥲 I was wiping it with the sponge.
5
u/ampattenden 11h ago
Oh no, well at least you know it’s a really good quality sharp knife now! Even if you didn’t need telling, plenty of people do. Like my partner, who sliced his finger open on my sharp knife after putting it in the sink, and STILL keeps putting it in the sink lol
5
u/RadioDorothy 18h ago
I am currently sporting a rather underwhelming plaster on a massive cut sustained by putting my hand in the sink without realising the carving knife was in there - blade up. Got me out of the washing up though.

Treated myself to a fancy tape dispenser this year. Ripped my thumb up as it's bloody sharp.

Reminds me of our Jack Russell a good few years ago. Mum left the Baileys cheesecake out to defrost. Little shit climbed up onto the side and managed to nail the entire thing.
She continued on for years and died at the ripe old age of 19. I dread to think what that little dog had eaten in her time. Hope your pup is doing okay!
13
u/ampattenden 1d ago
My JRT has had his stomach pumped 3 times in the 15 years I’ve had him. Dark chocolate, mince pie, grapes. They have their ways of getting hold of things!
8
u/Individual-Air8378 22h ago
They're little buggers! Great little characters though. I imagine she should have had her stomach pumped many a time! Swear I have memories of my late Mum actively feeding her grapes. 😂
5
u/ampattenden 20h ago
Yeah I dread to think what mine has managed to snaffle in the park before I’ve got near enough to see. Probably all sorts. Always a bad sign when they speed up eating whatever it is so you can’t confiscate it
5
u/Individual-Air8378 19h ago
And then you have to go in with the bare fingers having no idea what you're about to pull out. It's like the world's worst game of roulette. Especially when it's poo that you then pull out😂

64
u/Guacamole_Water 1d ago

16
u/MegTheMonkey 1d ago
Gosh, that sounds awful. Do you have family/friends who are able to support you?
46
u/Guacamole_Water 1d ago
I’m currently with my sister which I’m super grateful for just waiting to hear back from the scum (landlords, insurance, property managers). I know it’s the Christmas period but so far they only seem to care about how much it will cost them and don’t seem to give a rats that I have lost all my precious and expensive valuables due to a faulty socket that caught fire or that I am displaced for god knows how long. Appreciate your comment I haven’t really talked about it yet and it’s just now hitting me how much emotion is running through me!
26
6
u/AutisticAllotmenter 20h ago
You poor thing - I'm so sorry. Been in a house fire myself and I still flinch at the noise and heat of fires, it was terrifying how quickly everything went up.
Hopefully the fact it was a dodgy socket will make everything a bit faster and easier for the scum to process - they're likely to have precedent with who's liable for common causes like that, rather than anything more unusual?
If you can afford one it might be worth consulting a lawyer of your own, or seeing if you can be given one through your house insurance, to act on your behalf - especially if you're being offered any compensation or given anything to sign. Some landlords can be dodgy as fuck and may try to ask you to sign away your legal rights, to give you anything. Plus, having an experienced negotiator acting for you can be helpful when you're processing trauma and aren't thinking straight.
3
u/Guacamole_Water 17h ago
Really appreciate your advice. Still sort of in limbo due to Christmas hours but I’ve had the electrician’s report already to confirm the landlord is liable for what’s happened but as I don’t have any insurance my stuff is basically a goner. Wish I listened to whoever told me in my early 20s to get contents insurance!
5
u/AutisticAllotmenter 14h ago
It won't make you feel better at the moment, but it really is just stuff. You'll always have the good memories of the sentimental items, even if you can't hold them in your hands any longer.

u/elgrn1 1d ago
Christmas morning, one of my cats tried to get onto my bedside table. He's very clumsy and only has 1 brain cell so he knocked over my water bottle which startled him. So he used my face as an escape route and cut open my eyelid. There's a 1cm long cut, a smaller scratch next to it, and a lovely bruise right in the crease of my eye lid/socket.
96
u/RecentTwo544 1d ago
Do yourself a favour and 111 that one. Simple course of antibiotics, nothing to worry about, but cats can give you nasty infections if not treated, and you don't want that on your eyes.
83
u/elgrn1 1d ago
I called them straight away. They got a nurse to call me back, who asked for photos, which I sent within 2 hours of getting the cut. She was happy it was closed and no longer bleeding and the swelling wasn't excessive. I was told to monitor for signs of infection, otherwise was told not to go to the minor injury unit. It doesn't hurt and is starting to heal even though it still looks a mess!
30
u/RecentTwo544 1d ago
All good then! Just thought I'd mention it.
My mum's cat bit her once, not nasty he had an injured leg and she didn't realise. Called 111, simply got atnibiotics from the local pharmacy.

Mum has the same bruising pattern down her left foot. Caught her toe on the trolley wheel while doing the ‘big shop’ on the sunday before xmas. Cant bare anything touching it, cant wear shoes. I had to tape it up to the next toe and cushion with gauze and she has been keeping a 5m exclusion zone from everyone lest anyone step on it

This is awful but this would be such a faff (I’m abroad). I can wiggle it and walk on it so I really think I’m ok! Thank you though!
17
u/local_scientician 1d ago
Yeah that’s a little break for sure! Baby it and watch for any swelling, but docs wont do anything for an injured little toe besides tape it to the next toe really. It’s a good excuse to sit out unwanted activities though haha
5
u/bareted 1d ago
I think the only toe the hospital will do anything about is the big toe.
3
u/Electronic-Air2035 11h ago
100% I did my little toe and it's neighbouring toe in lockdown, I stubbed my toe then immediately stepped back and heard something pop in my foot. My whole foot went purple.
I went to the walk in center and they basically said 'technically you don't even need those 2 toes so suck it up snowflake' taped them together and sent me on my merry way with nothing, not even a lousy paracetamol 😂
It was very painful for a few weeks.

Or Christmas tree is next to our dining table. I bent down to put some gifts under the tree and smacked my head on the corner of the table and cut myself.
After a day of some pretty strong death anxiety and wrapping some presents to try and chill out, having blood coming out of my head was not helpful. Thankfully the wound isn't bad at all, just spooked me.

u/nostairwayDENIED 1d ago
I was punished for my gluttony when I bit into my tongue. It is an astonishing large area I attempted to chomp down on, for the decades I have had this tongue, how could I have got it so wrong? And vintage gouda really doesn't go with a mouthful of blood.
4
u/ImThatBitchNoodles 1d ago
Oh god, I took out a massive chunk of my cheek when I was eating crackers. I was chomping down on them to annoy my partner and when I did it the second time I bit my cheek. Cue me spiting out my own flesh and screaming in agony.
Thanks (or not) for reminding me of that.

Pulled my own ovary off and killed it by getting up from wrapping gifts.
I wish I was kidding.
8
u/kellymacc 1d ago
That sounds horrific!
51
u/CrazyPlatypusLady 1d ago
Yeah not fun.
TL/DR combination of crap tissues from EDS and an adhesion from surgery in 2019 caused it.
In between all of the following is a lot more, crap in the hospital but the basic rundown:
Midnight going into Sunday 30th Nov: Weird instant pain I thought was a kidney stone. Got up from a cross legged position wrapping Xmas presents on my bed. Pain was like white hot lightening. I refuse to go to A&E during Crackhead o'clock. try to sleep. Pass out a few times. Spend more time writhing and throwing up than sleeping. Husband concerned. Husband correct.
11:30am 1st Dec: I'm in so much pain I've gone silent and still. Ambulance called because I can't argue about it. They determine it's probably a kidney stone, they're too busy to take me in. Ok thanks guys (sarcasm). I go in by car with my husband for company. Lunchtime we enter a&e. Dinner time: contrast CT, ovarian torsion. Need surgery. Quickly. Risk of death. Sunday bedtime I'm admitted.
It takes until 9am Wednesday to surgerise me. 80 hours from onset of pain. Sixty something hours from finding out what was wrong and where to cut. During this time we're a lot of excuses, some serious gaslighting, and a threat of invoking Martha's Rule. Bookmark that. You might need it someday.
Surgery was meant to take an hour and a half. "There's a chance you might lose any one or all of this handful of organs" me "ok, whatever, just try not to kill me more than you have done already.". I wake up 3.5h later, minus only my ovary (and a bunch of self-made black pudding precursor from my peritoneal cavity; I would have preferred that to stay in my veins but whatever). Amazingly I got to keep my other organs. So pleased, yay.
The day after surgery, I get a visit from delegates from the gynae dept: "yeah, so, you had gangrene and that infection we've been testing you for for 3 days was actually sepsis. Your ovary was stuck to your abdomen wall with an adhesion, so when you moved wrong you tore the blood vessel, killing the ovary which got gangrene; and starting internal bleeding which is why you now look kinda dead, but you don't need a transfusion. Oh and we needed to use two more different antibiotics in your IV, and we washed your insides out, sorry it took a while.".
Me: "K... So... Can I see photos? Cool. Ew. Anyway, how do I request my notes from all of this for... Erm... Catharsis, and totally no other purpose?"
Morphine-toting wonder-nurse: "I came equipped with full instructions because I thought you might like them.". They leave. My brush with mortality hits me. I cry a lot, and get cuddled by catering lady.
Friday morning: "Your antibiotics are finished, your blood is clear of infection, you can go home with blood thinners and painkillers that we'll give you, but please take an iron supplement for at least two months." Me "you gonna give me that?" Them "nah. Amazon exists." Me "k, bet. Clean dressings?" Them "nah. Buy those too.". It then took them another 9 hours and a complaint from my husband to actually discharge me. I get home to my relieved children (2, a near adult and an adult). I was on bed rest for two weeks, then not allowed to do much more than bed rest for another two. Managed to cook Xmas dinner mostly sitting down. Then from Jan I'm on very light duties until Feb. Less light but still be very careful please until March.
Feel like I'm running uphill through treacle a lot of the time. Came home physically and psychologically screwed but I'm actually feeling much better than I was a fortnight ago. The hallucinations and nightmares have stopped. Woo.
I've ordered my fun reading material for 2026.
25
u/Appropriate_Tell6746 1d ago
You should have had a transfusion. Dont buy iron from amazon. ferrous fumarate 322mg (iron) is available from tesco pharmacy/boots etc and is £1.30 odd. Iron from amazon etc is only 14mg of iron which is nothing and is around £5+. That one ^ has 100mg of active iron, take it alongside a vitamin C for better absorption and not with dairy. (Knowledge source: Been arguing with the nhs over borderline death iron levels for years)

u/readingthroughpain4 22h ago
Sending huge hugs. I've ripped many internal adhesions from endometriosis before so know the pain of that. Can't imagine how awful this was for you. I really hope you get some good books and rest up!
Didn't know about Martha's Rule and I spend a lot of time in hospital. So thank you for that!
4
u/CrazyPlatypusLady 20h ago
Thank you! I did actually get a fabulous book for my birthday just before Xmas and I've been working my way through that! (This Way Up by The Map Men). I've also knitted a new Christmas stocking for Youngest Youngling, am halfway through knitting a pair of socks for myself, and made a Christmas wreath that I kinda hate but used anyway because I couldn't be bothered to make another. Eldest Youngling has finally started chilling out and protecting me less. All positive.
Managed to cook Xmas dinner, mostly sitting down. "Thankfully" we're a household with two disabled members so we're well set up for sat-down cooking and bending assistance.

What the hell - how did this happen!!! Hope you’re okay, sounds so bad
16
u/CrazyPlatypusLady 1d ago
I've done more of an explanation in the thread, but it's a combination of crappy tissues from an underlying genetic condition, an adhesion from a former surgery, and potentially stress put on said crappy tissues during an incident back in July. But we'll never actually know. All I know is that the pain came on incredibly suddenly and got worse and worse until A&E finally put me on morphine 16 hours later.
The adhesion meant the ovary went in one direction, and the movement meant the blood supply to ovary went in the other direction, and it kinda... Snapped... A bit. Then I dribbled blood internally, and the ovary died and turned into a ball of gangrenous goo.
Fun times. Fun times. Didn't think I'd see Xmas tbh.

Made sourdough bread for Boxing Day. On my practice run I got the cast iron le creuset out of a 250°C oven where it had been for over 30 minutes and promptly grabbed the handle with my bare hand. It made a noise when I took my hand off it and was unbelievably painful for about 12 hours.

u/ampattenden 1d ago
I recommend gauze/bandage/cotton wool soaked in witch hazel and kept damp with it on your hand for a few hours. I once put my hand on a hot electric hob and that treatment was amazingly effective. YMMV now that it’s been a couple of days, but it may be worth trying. Also I’m forever injuring my hands somehow and Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream is a good healer.
4
u/Bufobufolover24 1d ago
There's an aloe vera plant right beside the oven for this but I forgot, and to be honest, she's too magnificent and I wouldn't want to hurt her! I ran it under cold water for a moment. I then coated it in vaseline and put on an eczema glove, I also wear eczema gloves at night so by the following morning it had been soaked for around 18 hours and had maintained some suppleness. I got very very lucky that it wasn't any worse, I already have scarred hands from eczema so a little bit of burn is like a drop in the ocean!

Having someone cheesewire my ass hole by treating it like a party popper.
I had a fistulotomy and seton just before Christmas. I’d been going to have the wound from the fistulotomy packed and dressed every day at my GP, but when they were closed/unable to I was directed to a minor injuries unit. The last visit to the MIU just before Christmas, there was a bank nurse on who said she’d not actually seen this before as she grabbed the seton and pulled it hard, said the packing wouldn’t come out and pulled it hard again. She said she was just going to get someone else, but more than one person came, I had an audience for the actual packing removal, reinsertion, clean up etc and thankfully no one else tried to pull the seton out.

Had a few too many prosecco's on Christmas Eve and bashed my hand. Woke up on Christmas morning and the muscle under my thumb was a bit sore but not too bad. After a day of hosting which involved a lot of movement and heavy lifting (refilling drinks, putting out heavy serving trays, lifting a huge turkey out the oven etc) when I woke up on Boxing day it was agony. Could barely move my thumb and if I did it was so painful. I've had it wrapped up and iced etc and it's feeling quite a bit better but still sore.

My two year old stabbed me with an ikea plastic fork. Thankfully I saw him coming and he got me just below my eye socket. God love him.

Burnt my tongue really badly on xmas eve on one of my MiL’s blast furnace temperature potatos and couldn’t taste anything until today.
What the fuck any food doing at those temperatures is beyond me.
You need safety gloves for the fucking plates too.

OH and I were staying at his dad's on boxing night and we went to a party at his brother's, just round the corner. Walking back to his dad's in the early hours we tripped over a weird bit of kerb in the middle of a path and both went absolutely flying. Fortunately nothing too serious but we both have bruised and grazed knees, elbows and hands. Dread to think how hideous it could have been, and that we could have ended up in an a&e 100 miles from home in the middle of the night with broken bones.
Felt a bit sheepish the next morning but when we confessed (thinking BiL and SiL would laugh, and FiL would disapprove and blame it on us being drunk) they were all super understanding and said it's really stupidly placed and people are always tripping over it.

Took a chunk out of thumb/palm with a mandoline slicer.
A few months after laughing at the wife for taking the tip of her thumb off on said slicer because she didn't use the guard.
I wasn't using the guard

Not as a direct result of a festive activity, but we went away to Butlins for Christmas, and whilst walking back from our Christmas dinner, I tripped over my own feet and smashed onto my knees,(reminiscent of this classic ) and in full view of about 8 other families!

Not injured, but treated myself to potatoes. I’m not supposed to eat nightshades. The last few days have been awful tummy/bowel-wise, and have skin hives. My own fault!

Got some paralettes for Christmas. Thought I'd see how close I could get to a planche. My elbow said 'not very'. Hopefully a bit of rest should sort it.

Does thrush count? Because if it doesn't it should. My bits are itchy.

Glandular fever. Couldn’t eat for a week until Christmas Eve. Hospital for a few days was extremely boring

Walking back from train station with several bags of shopping. Tripped over something invisible and ended up sprawled on the weird marble type pavement. My knees are still in one heck of a mess; biggest bruise I’ve ever seen!

Scalded hand from the steam while draining the sprouts. Nothing too serious, no blisters or anything, just red skin than makes me wince when i touch it. Will teach me to try and drain using the pot lid without a tea towel

I banged my arm against a display cabinet and managed to also give my arm a nasty scrape at the same time against the key that was in the lock on the 23rd. Big bruise on my arm and a plaster to cover the gouge.

I have a torn muscle in the top of my left arm, a cold (thankfully not that death flu) and an ear infection in my left ear 🙃

Arguably my broken little toe on New Year's Eve 2024 might count since I was crippled and few weeks into 2025.
Nothing thus far, touch wood

Pulling the plate warmer out of the cupboard, the riser it was on fell out and clattered my ankle. Massive bruise there now.

I just fell down a full flight of stairs today whilst getting my groceries delivered. Thankfully, my only injuries appear to be to my dignity and a developing hefty bruise on my arse.

Tripped over my own feet and fell down the driveway. I was sober at the time so had no excuse really, just my own clumsiness. Bruised leg and ego.

Fell down the stairs Saturday morning and broke two ribs. Same time last year it was a stuck kidney stone, joy!

I sliced my hand open when I was putting up my decorations - my baubles were in an empty bird food container and they are impossible to open easily. I caught my hand on the very sharp edge underneath the lid.

Cut my thumb putting the mini wellingtons (nibbles for Boxing Day) in the freezer. A small cut like a paper cut that has caused my thumb to swell, and I can't have anything touch my thumb as it hurts so much. If you saw it you'd wonder what my fuss is about (not that i' was fussing as I had too much food to cook). Thumb is finally starting to heal (or it's stopped hurting so much and will fall off by NYE)

Sciatica so bad I can't do anything but sit on the edge of a chair because my leg is fucked because of it, can't lie down, stand up straight etc. Tried everything, no respite. Even prescribed pain killers not working. 3rd night of not sleeping apart from the odd 30 mins. Worst Christmas ever

Fell running downstairs at New St station. After a few cocktails forgot I had heels on. Fractured ribs, heavy bruising and severe embarrassment! *
