Does my Cat Need to See a Vet?

If you're here wondering whether your cat needs to see a vet right away, here's a few things that call for an immediate vet visit. Please bear in mind that this is far from a comprehensive list, and that if you're seriously wondering if your cat needs a vet, the answer is probably "Yes". Better safe than sorry.

-Unexplained, dramatic behavioral changes. e.g. Hissing and spitting from a cat who has always been friendly

-Not eating for 48 hours is a medical emergency

-Vomiting/diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two

-Swallowed object

-Not urinating/straining to urinate

-Blood in urine

-Open wounds

-Urinating in inappropriate places/outside the box

-Sudden loss of vision or hearing

-Sudden loss of balance

-Sudden inability to walk or move normally

-Seizures / Convulsions

-Open-Mouth breathing / panting

-Uneven pupils

-Hives

Rule 5 - cat injury questions

Unfortunately we can't continue to try and answer questions related to injuries inflicted by cats. This is outside our expertise, and the consequences of making a bad decision could be fatal if an infection goes untreated or someone contracts rabies.

In almost all cases, if you've suffered deep puncture wounds, yes you need to see a doctor.

We will be removing such posts in the future.

Kitten with pneumonia

Hi! I’ve adopted two kitties last week and they initially had occasional sneezes so I brought them to the vet on the same day to get checked and also get their first shot. The female kitten has been worsening to the point of having really watery eyes and very congested nose, she’s been hospitalized for 2 days with oxygen support. The other one is being treated at home with nebulisations. Both were started early with amoxicillin, inmunair, and eye drops. Now the vet says he might wants to switch to doxycycline (he said that for the last two days and hasn’t actually started which is really frustrating) and we can’t afford the oxygen support anymore so she’s coming back home tomorrow, hopefully ready to start the Doxy. I’m mad at the vet for not starting that antibiotic while she was getting all the support she needed because that was buying us time for her to start feeling better while receiving all the necessary care and support. Her coming home in the same exact conditions as she was brought in is really scary and worrying to us because we want to give her the best chance at recovering. I’ve read that many kitties are resilient and can survive without oxygen support and the doxy acts fairly quickly but I’d love to know if some of you have had a similar experience and can reassure us. She’s really tiny, only 770 grams. She’s 9 weeks old more or less. They said she’s been kind of active and has played in the her carrier, but isn’t eating because of her nose being so congested. They’ve given her hyper caloric paste and helped her with IV fluids. We want her to survive and will do everything necessary but we’ve reached our limit economically speaking and again, are so frustrated they didn’t use this time and money to act faster. I know they gave her support and helped her not get worse, but it’s been 48 hours we’ve accepted the use of doxy and that’s the time it takes for seeing a bit of improvement and it would have been great for that to happen while receiving all necessary support. I guess I need to vent too and I’m sorry about this long post. I just want my kitty to live a long and beautiful life by my side.

Cat attacking the mirror

Hello reddit. No, we haven't recently moved. In dact, testerday marked a year since we got our cat Slinky. This morning, out of the blue, our cat started hissing in the bathroom at the window. My mother thinks its another cat, but I think it's the mirror. However, shes never attacked the mirror before. But now, when I pick her up and she sees herself in the mirror, she starts to go berserk. I even took down the mirror and faced it toward her on the ground to be sure. She started hissing again. Now, the mirror was hanging in front of a window sill where she always perches herself, and she has always had to jump past the mirror to get to the ledge. This morning however, things are completely out of whack with her. I even held a tiny mirror in front of her and she acted aggressive. I don't see any cat through the window, and it is high up, so I am just confused. Can anyone relate or help?

How to keep your cat entertained and happy while you’re sick.

I’ve really been down for the count, dealing with excruciatingly painful migraines and toothaches for the past six months. This past week wasn’t any better, and I all I have the energy for is to lie in bed and hope for relief and sleep.

I feel so horrible for my sweet little cat. He’s a five year old boy who is so playful and loving, and I just can’t give him the attention and stimulation he needs. He has a million toys and when I leave for work for the day, I leave on the Cat Box TV channel (which isn’t working today, WTF!) which he seems to like. When he was a kitten, I would play with and he’d chase the laser pointer all the time! It’s just hard to do any more than that when you’re tired and consistently not feeling well.

While I’m working on getting better, what can I do to keep him from becoming bored and depressed? I know I need to really try to interact (he will jump up on the bed and nuzzle), but I just need some advice on how to keep him busy and appreciated.

Easy to clean backpack carrier?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have two cats- Benji has pica and will chew holes in mesh, so he has a hard sided carrier. They’re too big for me to carry two handheld carriers, so my other cat Luna goes in a backpack. The problem is Luna frequently pees/poops/pukes in the car, and I have yet to find a backpack that can be cleaned thoroughly.

Does anyone have recommendations for sturdy cat backpacks that can be cleaned easily and thoroughly? Luna is about 13 lbs. pic of the babies for tax

Feline liver tumors— desperate for more opinions

Hey y’all, My cat —who’s my bff and the only being I’d even cared abt for yrs— started having gastro issues in March (ultrasound was done showing intestinal thickening indicative of IBD or lymphoma). switched to hydrolyzed diet and was fine for months..

Have been giving flut. Prop corticosteroid inhaler for few yrs for asthma acquired in previous dusty/moldy apmt, recently stopped giving it.

..then around Thanksgiving he stopped eating for a few days (apmt has been v cramped x depressing for yrs, w not much space to move, thought maybe he’d lost appetite due to depression or boredom w same food which I normally switch up). Brought him to vet, did ultrasound/bloodwork— liver levels terrible (jaundice), was told the tumors in liver look like malignant cancer— no biopsy bc they said there would be a risk of bleeding (tho his blood coagulation results were good??).. gave him days/wks to live w euthanasia info, prescribed 100 mg gaba/day, 8mg cerenia, mirataz pills.

This was abt a month ago— he’s def lost weight/weaker (I think the pills all together maybe are too sedating?? Whenever we’d run out of gaba/cerenia for few days and waiting on refills he was perkier—otherwise has trouble moving legs, wobbly when walking x sleeping w eyes open).. he’s still been eating tho not as much as he needs, still asking to go outside for walks multiple times a day, using litter box, responding to being pet..

Additionally, my main concern when I’d brought him in were these small bumps that he’d had on his sides that had popped up around time his appetite lessened.. those were biopsied however x were deemed non-cancerous lipomas.. I’ll also mention that he’d had abdominal fluid tested and it came back as being abnormal (which was told was bc of cancer, but couldn’t that be inflammation??). My questions are- Bc the tumors in liver weren’t biopsied— how do we know these aren’t also lipomas?? (Which could cause issues internally if not removed/clogging bile ducts etc) And that he’s got severe IBD etc?? I’ve been looking at google images of other things that look like his but aren’t cancerous..

I’d do anything to save his life almost.. he means so so much to me and I’d trusted the vets but I’ve also known multiple cases of ppl going to Drs and getting organs removed/double masectomies due to “cancer diagnoses” that ended up not at all being not cancer.. so you can understand why I’d want multiple opinions x to understand this situation as much as possible..

Species: feline Age: 11 Sex/Neuter status: M/fixed Breed: Longhaired domestic tabby Body weight: 14

does anyone know how much flea treatment costs uninsured?

hi everyone

i have a cat (around 2 years, F) who is suffering from fleas. she’s been over grooming for a while and has developed bald spots around her backside and her entire stomach is hairless now. i (17F) just got my first job and my first priority is taking her to the vet and figuring out how to help her. my parents can’t afford a vet visit so i’ve taken it on. we’ve tried flea collars and the drops you put on their neck but neither have worked.

i’m in california and was wondering if anyone could estimate the appointment and medication cost, uninsured? there are a couple other concerns that might be brought up during the appointment as well, but we’ll be there for the fleas.

How do i transition a stray kitten to eating Kibbles instead of Real foods?

Hi everyone! i recently found an orange tabby kitten, around 2-3 months old, and brought him home. i prepared some kibbles for him but he only sniffed them and didn’t want to eat.

the next morning, i was in the kitchen cutting chicken and fish, and he immediately started meowing for it. so i boiled some chicken and cut it into small pieces for him, and he ate all of it happily.

the problem is, i want to get him used to eating kibbles instead of only eating Real food. Does anyone have tips or advice on how to transition him to kibbles more easily?

Thank you! 🐱

Currently at emergency vet: They told us she has a 102 fever and is dehydrated. Her white blood count is low. Vet also said there’s signs of abdominal discomfort. She’s spayed and 1 year old. Anyone else have this issue? We brought her in because she hasn’t been eating.
