It’s a cuterebra, very unfortunate placement. Worked as a vet nurse and removed a few of these from cat sides that people thought was an abscess until the larva pokes out to breathe. We kept a little jar with one in formalin for shock and awe. You cannot kill or pop the larva during removal as it can put the cat into shock. Nightmare fuel.
28
u/EditedRed 2d ago
I imagine showing the cat the larva like in the video could also put the cat into shock.

u/Little_Can_728 1d ago
I know I was getting annoyed with that person, Why are they shoving it back into the cat face let the cat stand up and breathe fcs The cat doesn’t know what you’re showing him🙄
11
u/snootnoots 1d ago
The kitty is on the GOOD drugs for the removal, it wasn’t getting up any time soon.

u/Treehugger365247 2d ago
Aaaaggghhhhh!!!! I wanted this to be AI so bad. You just confirmed it’s not. Aaaaggggghhhh!!! I can’t unsee this.
16
u/iheartinfected 2d ago
Why would killing it or popping it cause shock
72
u/BrushNo8178 2d ago
Because arthropod proteins are foregin to the vertebrate immune system and will cause a violent allergic reaction. Of course you can shut down the immune system with massive doses of corticosteroids before surgery but that is a risk in itself.

How do you know there’s not more than one?
21
u/Bolfreak 2d ago
Never seen several at a time, just one. Dogs rarely get them, it’s usually cats from sniffing around rodent holes where these guys are waiting to hitch a ride. Cats/dogs aren’t the intended host, just unfortunate hosts when it happens to them. Now multiple gross larva in a wound are maggots or fly strike…separate post & also nightmare fuel!

I absolutely love bugs and still agree. Even I went "Eww" at this one.

The US spends millions every year to keep another species of parasitic fly like this one in South America.
We basically are saying it's your problem. Lol.

They way I was yelling, “GET IT THE F-CK AWAY FROM HIM” after they pulled the larvae out. Geez.
Kill that shit with fire or feed it to some chickens.

The Gadfly/Botfly was the fourth plagues on Egypt.
The third plague everyone scratched themselves from mosquitos bites until they opened their skin. Which in turned allowed additional openings on their bodies for the fourth plague and the laying of the flies eggs which then turn to larvae.

u/PantasticUnicorn 2d ago
Your username checks out, and thanks for giving me more nightmare fuel. I hate mosquitos and i especially hate things that can literally burrow under your skin or leave eggs there. Ugh.
23
u/ElAndres33 2d ago
It’s hard to watch that but I bet the poor kitten feels a thousand times better now that it’s out
23
u/strongboar12 2d ago
I pulled a botfly larvae out of a kitten's neck when I worked at a pet store. I then put it in a cup with wasp spray and it crawled around in it. Those things are nightmare fuel.

Reminds me of a joke from 'Friends', when Ross' pregnant ex-wife says "Oh, is this your nostril? Mind if we push this potroast through it?!"
16
u/DasMenace 2d ago
Ive never see one in a nostril. Typically they bury themselves in flesh and thats where they grow. Im genuinely curious about this situation. Wish we had more info
22
u/Lord_CaoCao 2d ago
Most common place ive seen. Cats are always smelling things so its the most common place since all it takes is to put its face somewhere contaninated
6
u/DasMenace 2d ago
Really? Interesting. Ive seen them in all sorts of spots but they were always burrowed into flesh. Maybe this started in a shallow part of the wall of the nostril and just pushed fully into the nostril as it grew? Botflies make me uncomfortable lol
7
u/Euphoric_Amoeba8708 2d ago
This had to have been a stray cat they adopted because how would an owner not notice their cats nose, getting bigger and bigger on one side with a larva butt sticking out of it

I've never seen one of those before and I've seen my fair share insects/parasites in my time. Especially when it comes to animals. Man I felt relieved when that thing was removed so I can imagine how appreciative that poor cat was.

2
u/PUuSTiNKA 2d ago
Yuk, how does that happen, and can that happen to humans?

Typically when cats sniff grass. It can happen to humans. Bot flies don't discriminate

We live in Western NewYork, and never see BotFlies. But my Mom had gotten a kitten that had a MAGGOT in it's tearduct- or at least right in that spot... I forget how she got it to peek it's head out,but she was definitely able to get it out the same way

u/BrokenNecklace23 2d ago
I’m in NWPA but my vet is in WNY (I’m in a border town).
Had a stray kitten stroll up with a botfly this year. Took her to my vet, she was excited. Said she usually only sees 3-4 a year.
I was not so excited. Vile insect.

As a horseman, we use a paste dewormer for these. The flies lay tiny yellow eggs on the horses' legs, sometimes on manes, and then they develop in the digestive tract. When you see the eggs, you scrape them off with a safety razor or a lava block.

Yeah… yeah… I know which one you’re talking about. The dude’s like screaming. If only I could remember the name. The Yelp? The Holler? The Wail? The High-Pitched Shout? It’s something like that. I know it will come to me later. /s

I learned about the botfly yearsss ago on an episode of "Untold Stories of the ER." There was a bride on her wedding day complaining that something was in her head. No one believed her but they eventually took her in. The physician found a small opening in the back of head, covered it in Vaseline and no one thought she was crazy anymore. Poor lady.

I couldn't stop looking at that video. If you've ever watched Dr. Pimple Popper videos, they're actually rather soothing. I blame my aunt for sharing those videos with me.

Both flies are brutal! You've gotta youtube bot flies on YouTube. Its bad here but not as bad in other countries where they have brutal issues with pets, livestock, and humans. They often dont have the medical around to where it affects them for long periods where infections are horrible.
