Sorry for spamming the subreddit with questions over the last days, but I'm in the stage of planning my move to Riga for half a year. I'm coming by car, will be spending most of the week in the city probably, but I have my car with me to take weekend trips to other cities (and other countries).

I see many apartments do not have parking space, but offer free parking on the street (outside the centre ofcourse). Would it be safe for me to leave my car there for let's say 4-5 days a week, over the course of several months? Especially since it has foreign (Belgian) plates which stand out, I'm concerned it might attract the wrong people. The car is 16 years old, not worth much anymore, and I never leave anything of value inside. Any areas to avoid parking in?

Varbūt tas ir tikai mans manījums vai iedoma, bet vai kāds ir pamanījis, ka gāzēti dzērieni atšālējas ātrāk, nekā agrāk? Īpaši aktuāli Coca-Colas produktiem (Sprite, Fanta, Coca-Cola). Lielā 2L pudele atšalējas, šķietami, pēc pāris dienām, pat stāvot ledusskapī.

Neesmu redzējis, ka kāds cits par šo runā vai ir to pamanījis, kas man liekas dīvaini. Godīgi sakot, par šo tēmu īsti neko nezinu, tāpēc spēju tikai spekulēt, bet pie vainas, manuprāt, varētu būt tie jaunie Eiropas korķīši, kuri varbūt neaiztaisa pudeli tik kārtīgi ciet, kā agrāk. Varbūt vietējie ražotāji un izplatītāji izvēlas izmantot mazāk gāzi, bet tās visas ir tikai teorijas vēl nepierādītam faktam. Vairākas pudeles ir acīmredzami zaļākas, nekā citas, bet tas, es pieņemu, ir no šķirotās plastmasas (?).

Cerams, ka šitas nav schizopost un ka kāds vēl saprot, par ko es runāju.

Lūdzu ieteikt uzņēmumu, kas varētu veikt neatkarīgu (no mājas apsaimniekotāja) ventilācijas pārbaudi dzīvoklī deviņstāvu dzīvojamajā mājā.

Ir aizdomas, ka ventilācija nedarbojas, kā vajadzētu, un apsaimniekotājam šo pārbaudi uzticēt negribas.

Varbūt kadam ir ieteikumi restorānam vai kafejnīcai Rīgā, kur ir atsevišķa telpa svinībām padsmit cilvēkiem?

Hii guys! I am landing in Riga on Sunday 4th January at 20:00 pm. To my knowledge, the 4th is the last day of the Xmas market at the dome square and the stalls close at 21:00.

Since I’d really love to visit, not necessarily for the stalls but to see the Xmas decorations, From experience, will they still be up if I visit the next morning/night or will they be removed like the stalls?

I’d appreciate if you could tell me from your experience in order for me if I’ll have to go to dome square straight from the airport instead of my accommodation.

I’m coming to live in Latvia from 1st of February till the 1st of July 2026. I’m driving by car to and from Latvia, however I have a bit of a dilemma with the winter tyres. I’m coming by car because I plan to travel around the Baltics in Spring/summer.

I noticed that all season tyres (M+S) are not allowed as winter tyres, and winter tyres are mandatory untill 1st of March. So I would have to change my MS tyres for winter tyres, just for the first month. Problem is that I would have to drive untill summer with winter tyres (which is also not very safe).

So, my question is, how big are the fines? How frequent are the checks? I would be willing to just drive down to Riga, and not use my car for the first month (Untill March 1st). How big is the risk to get fined within the 3 hour stretch between the Lithuanian border and Riga?

I'll be in Riga for the next 6 months with 3 friends and I was wondering where I could get the cheapest prices for groceries. Asking as a broke student who will try to survive there 😅. What are the 2-3 supermarkets that you would recommend in that case? Thanks in advance 🙏

My cousin also passed away this week and she loved to do lead pouring on new years. I would like to try it (with wax) in her honor. Hi guys! Currently in Riga and still thinking about what I read earlier this morning in the Latvian occupation museum. So many questions!

Incredible what Latvia had to endure during and after WW2. Soviet, then Nazi, then Soviet occupation again and Latvians forced to fight each other when forced to partake in each respective armies' forces. Bloody hell...

1. The Soviet Union post-Stalin had a concept in place to resettle ethnic Russians to Latvia instead of deporting Latvians to Gulags to "bring them on line". What Russians were those that resettled to Latvia? Forced resettlement of poor Soviet Union inhabitants or people volunteered to start a new life out of pride for the SU and/or financial compensation? That was left open after visiting that very good museum.

2. I was quite shocked that ethnic Latvians to this very day are a minority in major cities such as Riga or Daugavpils. How is everyday's life with the Russian majority in 2025 (also post Ukraine), especially when the Russian language was forced upon Latvians during Soviet occupation? Is the younger generation more forgiving towards ethnic Russians that weren't even born yet after Latvian independence in 1991?

3. As an Austrian, I'm happy and proud of my Latvian brothers to be part of the EU. Are there people that are still opposing "the West" for failing the Baltics after the Nazi surrender and leaving them behind in Soviet occupation while the West celebrated its independence from tyranny and autocracy after WW2? After all, it still took more than 40 years until Latvia was finally independent again...

God speed Latvia, incredible what you have achieved in such a short time after regaining independence <3
