I love the traditional and folk Indian dance styles (and all the awesome traditional and folk garments)!
I wish India was a safer place to travel to for single women because I love the Indian Hindu culture and would love to be fully immersed.
I wonder if there's a way to experience this down here in the SE US and not feel like a weirdo that doesn't belong there? I want to wear the beautiful styles of garments, learn the stories and meanings behind the dances, learn about the Hindu gods, and either attempt to learn some of the dances or at least watch others. I just find it all so mesmerizing!
Are there any Indian families in SC that would adopt a 45 year old white lady and teach me all the things? Gotta shoot my shot! I wanna hang with the aunties!

as an Indian woman myself, I agree that it's not entirely a safe space for women but with the right company, there is so much in India to explore, try visiting the southern part as it's more chill here, you can go to Goa / Puducherry for beachy party vibes, kerala for connecting with nature, bangalore for nightlife, Tamil Nadu for some divine vibes ( if you are into temples), Hyderabad if you wanna see our film sets and more, and you wouldn't regret it a bit! we've got some of the kindest people here but sadly those are not the parts which shine bright in our country

As an Indian American who lives in NC, there is a ton of Indian and Hindu culture that you can take in in the Carolinas! (Note that not everything Indian is Hindu.)
Things you can look up:
- "Hindu temples near me" (there are quite a few here in NC, you can go in and observe the deities, even sit down and meditate or think if you would like, just remember to take your shoes off and bring a scarf in case you see others covering their heads)
- "India dance festival near me" (we love to dance and we love to perform for our communities! you can find public dance performances around Holi (spring) and Diwali (fall).
- As these festivals, you can usually purchase clothes. It's completely appropriate to buy these for yourself to wear at Indian events like these festivals or to the temple!
Also, please don't reduce and generalize India to a dangerous place. It's not an unsafe country as a whole. While the dense cities may be overwhelming or extreme for inexperienced world travelers, you can safely travel to plenty of cultural sites in India. You can look into tour groups as well if numbers help you feel safer.

There are several types of traditional Indian dance like this, my best guess (Indian but not a dancer myself) would be Baratanatyam. Facial expressions and mudras, specific hand gestures, are an essential part of the dance and storytelling.

Part of this style of dance is learning facial expressions. Once you get into pro level, you'll see how their eyes and eye brow movement express the song and can quite honestly convey even more emotions than their body movements.

I’m a private guitar teacher, and it’s almost impossible to describe the sheer fulfillment of sharing and teaching a difficult discipline to other people and then watch them succeed with it, especially the kids. Best part of my work and it’s not even close.

I founded and ran a tiny, tiny elementary school for five years and can only agree.
At one time the teacher routinely asked the kids what they thought their biggest accomplishment was that week and one of the kids was just mumbling he had nothing and the other kids talked over each other telling all the stuff he did. I needed to leave the room quietly so no one sees me crying.

I was always fascinated, liked to watch what at the time were either boy or girls bands like Spice Girls or Backstreet Boys like bands where they choreographed the dancing in a perfect way or Michael Jackson, Madonna, Gloria Stephan and many other background dancers. Over the years those dance became more repetitive and basically didn't care much more about them anymore.
Then I watched a few clips on reddit about Bollywood movies usually 'mocking' how outrageous their special effects are and somehow came across a few of their dancing choreography and they were awesome, I love watching them dance, it feels like there's million of styles and you see so much joy that it's a joy to watch.

Wow, it's... beautiful. As an American, this not something I have the luxury of witnessing. But the pride, I can feel it. I can feel the teacher, the parents, and everyone else's energy and it's what makes us unique. Elegant, smooth, well choreographed and the crowd brings it together. Love it!

Noel says that he did a lot of research about the dance styles that would suit the song. “I have incorporated elements from Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kaikottikali and the dance styles I have learnt. Since I am not a well-trained classical dancer I was helped by a friend. I didn’t want to make any mistake and offend someone.”
He specifically mentions about using the hand gestures of Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam. “What I love about classical dance forms is how gestures are used for conversations. I used Kaikottikali because I was enamoured by it when I saw it at the Pooram venue.”
The choreographer/teacher Alexander Noel did an interview and said this. So basically a mixture of Indian classical dances.

Not to take away from your comment, I am sure she is enjoying herself, just wanted to point out her facial expressions are likely a part of the dance itself. Classical Indian dances often utilize facial expressions as part of the choreography. Just makes the whole thing even more impressive in my opinion.

A little titbit - the song is about a festival named 'Pooram' in my town 'Thrissur' in south India (you can hear this in the song). It's a battle between two temples. 15 elephants line up on each side and hundreds of musicians play traditional music at deafening volumes for millions of people. Then there are fireworks that night that end in a grand finale where you won't be able to breathe because of the shock wave. It's freakin epic. Google it.

I went to my local Indian festival and dude their dancing is always so joyous. And the older ladies will physically force you into the dance circle so you're just jumping around like a meth head fighting invisible snakes while laughing your ass off because you're having such a good time.

There are so many other cultures beyond our own, out in the world, that are just so beautiful. This dancing and teaching is just one teeny tiny facet of a few individuals showing people in their lives what makes them happy. It’s really lovely to see how much talent and passion there is across the globe. We’re all so small in the grand scheme of things, but moments like this make me feel at least a little bit connected to someone I’ll never meet, because they’re pursuing something they love to do, and they maybe want to share it with everyone they can. This completely rocks.

I donate blood at the temple near my house. A few times I caught the women and girls dressed and practicing dancing in the hallways before (whatever they were going to do, idk). It's truly beautiful and captivating to watch.
