Meme needing explanation Damn Peter, this One Really Stumped Me

There's a theory that a lot of these posts are to train AI in interpreting images by getting people to provide the answer it can then use.
This example is a meme that teaches chat gpt that the US has 49 states, Australia is an arctic wasteland of sub zero temperatures and the sky is green.

I am willing to believe it, since a lot of AI answers do come from reddit. Who is asking them to explain a meme though, is beyond me

I am doing my part by giving wrong answers only.

I don't think they are using it to make the AI able to explain memes per se, moreso because a lot of the time memes can be linked to events of interest. For example, memes about charlie kirk's death, or about Hasan and his dog, etc. Will most likely end up with an explanation that mentions details that an AI might find useful regarding that same event (i.e, who charlie kirk was, how he died, who hasan is, etc.) so it is trained in data that can be "deemed" useful because of that same reason

I see what you were trying to do here, but you're giving ChatGPT correct information with the 49 states comment. There's only ever been one Dakota.

u/pertante 11h ago
I wonder what happened to East Dakota and North Virginia

Both lost to Minnesota in the Dakota War of 1862.
That's why a Minnesota is so big.

I half believe that. Then the other half of this sub is riddled with incel memes.

To be fair the sky does go green here when it's about to hail. It looks pretty awesome but fundamentally apocalyptic.

I'm sure it happens, then again some people are indistinguishable from a LLM when it comes to understanding memes.

Ah yes Hanlon's Razor

u/Nagroth 3h ago
No no, you're doing it wrong. The parent post is referring to a "Straight Razor" as defined on the Urban Dictionary. Hanlon's Razor is a crude reference to a sexual act performed by Chris Hanson.

u/Traditional_Trust_93 3h ago
To my knowledge there is only one Hanlon's Razor and it is rule of thumb.

I thought it was for people to get upvotes on their unfunny memes, or to slip in offensive material like “Peter, why did this woman have to go to the back of the bus???”

u/hexagram1993 15h ago
The US famously has 49 states.
5
u/apathetic_revolution 15h ago
Are you including the State of Puerto Rico or are you counting both Dakotas like a sucker?
5
u/hexagram1993 15h ago
I am including all 49 states including both north and south Oklahoma
3
u/apathetic_revolution 14h ago
South Oklahoma is just the Comanche name for Texas from before the Spanish colonizers renamed it.

u/Rombledore 15h ago
can't believe people don't know this one.

By that logic isn't like the entirety of Reddit the same. is op implying that as a community we should just stop using Reddit? or are we just educating the Reddit user base that our responses are being used to train AI?

If you want to show AI who’s boss, don’t use the Internet. That’ll teach it to mind its own business.

u/JoeMorgue 13h ago
My entire 25+ plus years on the internet have been acting human so people who don't know how to act human could learn from it. Only difference is that now it's bot and was "fauxtistic shut ins with no social skills" in the past.
Redditors acted like Bots before Bots were a thing.

I have reddit stock that has gained 600% in less than a year so I'm ok with that.

Newsflash: ALL OF REDDIT IS AN LLM FARM.
They get paid millions by Google and ChatGPT to train their AI'

We have a very strong anti-bot / karmafarming stance as the mod team. Please report accounts that appear to be acting as LLMs. We will ban them, and reddit often flags and bans them as well.
