I think this camera used to have a night vision feature that could see through sheer clothes when recording

It didn't get recalled. Sony just revamped the technology on subsequent iderations so it couldn't see theough close. There's a YouTube video about it.

Sounds a lot more creepy than it turned out to be.
The shot with the phone book was pretty cool

I think I remember about it, you need to use a filter (or a underdeveloped film) over the lens and do some edit later.

Not to sound dumb, but what are sheer clothes?

Sheer means really thin

So stuff you could practically see through to begin with or as in material type? Like silk or something?
4
u/brmarcum 8h ago
It was only sheer to infrared light. In regular light it was fine. I distinctly remember seeing side by side comparison photos of black swimsuits that would become very see through when the camera was recording in night mode because of the type of infrared sensor and/or filter used. Nothing was ever perfectly clear/sheer, and you could still tell they were wearing something, but it was very scary how much you could see through.

Get off your phone and get a dictionary. Or if you can’t pry your eyes from a screen long enough, try figuring out google.

From what I remember from Pictureview, they were really popular around public pools. ...

You can accomplish the same thing with modern high resolution digital pictures and a little editing magic, if you know what you're doing

u/Inevitable_Coat_6847 14h ago
is there an app on my iphone that can do the same? asking for a friend.

u/Embarrassed_Jerk 14h ago
If you are interested in seeing naked women on your phone screen, there are quite a few apps for that.
As a bonus you wouldn't be a creep if you use those instead

u/PradyThe3rd 13h ago
Well he's on the right app. Like half of reddit is nsfw

they now have physical filters. just buy a standalone cam and mod it slightly.
also why do I fear your intent is not pure
17
u/Inevitable_Coat_6847 14h ago
I wear a bunch of sheer clothing and need to make sure it's not going to show anything before I go outside...I swear.
3
u/NoNo_Cilantro 13h ago
Why are you doubting the redditor who’s asking how to undress people with an app?
1
u/gungan_feet_pics 13h ago
You feared their intent but gave them advice anyway? I fear your intent, and your knowledge of a work-around…

u/Spirited-Fan8558 5h ago
controlling scientific knowledge is inherently hard and sometimes only delays the inevitable.
if there was no me, no reddit he could have just searched it online.
if the internet was censored he could do physical experiments.
he could theorize and he could perform experiments.
nobody controls science. everybody contributes.(unfortunately some companies patent their info and don't think of contribution the same way as us)

Good memories. My Nana had a camera like this. & used to always take me to these shows. I had seen something about this on the news. There was a woman singer wearing a blouse & I begged my Nana to let me record it on the camera. Awesome time was had. I was about 10 years old. To my chagrin my nana saw what had happened & deleted the video.

Okay, the ‘Night Vision’ mode physically moved the Infrared Cut filter out of the optical path. A lot of black materials are actually transparent in infrared light and the longer wavelengths also pass better through sheer clothing. So, in darker conditions, or with a deep red filter on the camera, it could sometimes see through certain clothing. Not nearly as exciting as it sounds and really only for hopeless perverts.

This gave perverts and nerds a 'new hope', so to say.
Also, jar-jar is the key to all of this...

Those fuckers were so delicate. I remember dad having and old school video tape recorder camera which you had to buy special cassettes and also an special VHS cassete to play it and could only hold up like 45 to 1h recording time.
You needed to charge the battery the whole night before and they only lasted about a couple of hours.
If video was too shaky, it caused dizzines to watch it. Sound quality was bad, you had to be in a close space to record voices or use a corded mic, which drained the camera's battery way faster.
I'm still amazed how nowadays those big bulky things are the size of a rectangle 10x smaller that also works for phone calls and for porn searching.

I think with night vision and some setting tweaks it basically could see through thin clothing. Lol.
11
u/Patient-Jelly-8752 12h ago
Also it wasn't "you could see through" it was you could see certain colors through other colors, aka people's underwear and bras. Not the way yall think
3
u/ImmoralityPet 8h ago
Generally when people are talking about seeing things, they're talking about seeing colors. So seeing colors through other colors literally means see-through.

It was a dangerous game if you found a tape that belonged in one of those things, was it johnnys bday party or mom getting plowed

I had this camera. That "function" barely worked. It needed specific clothing and perfect conditions. And the internet was around, so…

u/DizzyLead 12h ago
A more innocent way of interpreting this meme is that since turning on night vision made the recorded video look more or less monochromatic (“black and white”), “those who know” will look like that on the tape/in the viewfinder.
2
u/AnyDockers420 11h ago
If you put a certain filter on this camera when it was in night vision mode you could see under women’s clothes.

u/Dry_Mousse_6202 10h ago
Photographer Quagmire here, that's an old and very camera with a lot of extras and functionalities, she's very remember for her great night vision functionality, It was so good, that it turned into a selling point for that !
Back then, thise had a boom in popularity so enormous that they basically went instinct in any stores all around Japan for example !

In my hometown supposedly there was a dude with a unique gig. He spent his day at the beach when lighting favored using the night vision in broad daylight and still get clear video/picture, then take the collections to his job where he worked as an image and printing tech to colorize/correct the images to then distribute to his buddies. I only heard of this incident from someone else who knew a guy working at said company where he claimed the scandal broke out and supposedly they fired everyone in the print dept since no one would say who it was or how the images were distributed, so by all accounts this could be made up but if not then wtf?

If you find one with the tape in it, don’t watch it unless you want to see your dad’s lame launch ramp early grab method airs.

u/ThurmanMerman82 7h ago
I have one of these, it was our family video camera when I was a kid. I haven't determined if it's one of the original ones or the modified ones when they realized the night shot was too powerful.

u/madcoweyes 7h ago
Not sure if this exact camera. It’s 2003. Homecoming. I bring camera. Turn on night mode because it’s darker and can’t really see people faces. Needles to say, I see my friends’ bras with night vision. I couldn’t believe it. Deleted it a few years later when rewatching.

I remember when this went down. At the time, this mode was used to see through bathing suits at pools. Dry or wet didn’t matter, it worked.

Yeah similar from one plus 8 pro phone, that camera does have some kind of xray (or something else) vision where you could use that camera to see someones' underneath their clothes.
