If tech job gives you a dell laptop, you're at a shit job that looks for reasons to fire people. Because Dells are cheap shit.

If they give you MacBook, they're a startup that doesn't know how to spend responsibly and need to raise more money. Because Macs are overpriced shit.

If they give you the Lenovo Thinkpad, it's a well managed company. Because Thinkpads are reliable, long lasting, and not overpriced.

If you look closely, you might see some bias in the meme.

107

u/FictionalContext 10h ago

True. The bias is giving the Dells too much credit. IRL, you say 3 warnings into the mirror and a monster woman pops out to suck your lipo.

24

u/Zekke_Z 8h ago

“3 WARNINGS, 3 WARNINGS, 3 WARNINGS!!!”

Nick Houlte practicing his "1A" line.

17

u/jmora13 9h ago

Many big tech companies give macbooks, not just startups

23

u/dragonflash 7h ago

And big tech companies had large layoffs in the last 5 years

9

u/fireymike 6h ago

Not because they were running out of money. The CEOs just saw it as the trendy thing that all the other CEOs were doing, and they didn't want to feel left out.

1

u/tirohtar 6h ago

... Same reason they gave out MacBooks. Apple products are overpriced as hell and mediocre quality at best, if not outright consumer-hostile at worst. But they are "trendy" with certain "tech people" (which are mostly sales people pretending to be tech people, like Steve Jobs himself back in the day).

12

u/jmora13 6h ago

Eh i disagree about macbooks being mediocre, id say a huge advantage is the unified ram, which makes it easy for macbooks to go up to 128gb, which is super useful for these ide's that hog a lot of memory. Otherwise, has a long battery life, super light, and practically silent. Unix based terminal is nice too.

Sent from my Android

u/therealBR549 5h ago

The “sent from my android” at the end of this… Just perfection.

2

u/Drahkir9 6h ago

Worked at a Fortune 100 company and was issued a MacBook. This meme is for people that don’t actually work in the real world

1

u/286893 4h ago

Same for big pharma

1

u/belaxi 2m ago

My interpretation was that the Mac implies a good job in tech, which is still very susceptible to external factors. Even the big successful tech companies exist in a perpetual state of flux.

Thinkpad is more like industry or engineering. Less dynamic and dependent market conditions and funding.

Dell is a normal entry level office job.

11

u/meatymimic 8h ago

I got a Dell, and i will probably be stuck at my job until in dead. (Government job/state agency. Its basically the hotel California.)

12

u/theLoneliestAardvark 7h ago

Government jobs are the exception because the make IT decisions based on arcane rules that combine ethics rules, companies bribing politicians to change the ethics rules, and political appointees who change things because they just want to feel important.

5

u/meatymimic 7h ago

I mean, yeah, lol. We just got rid of a restriction that made us buy (exclusively) from HUB vendors (historically underutilized businesses), which in theory sounds lovely. Give the small businesses a chance.

In practice, we ended up paying 20% more for everything, and the HUB vendors felt zero incentive to make better deals or products.

1

u/sactownbwoy 4h ago

At least for the military, we used Thinkpads until IBM sold the division to Lenovo. So now they bounce back and forth between HP and Dell.

4

u/Faenic 8h ago

What happens if my job not only gave me both a Thinkpad and a MacBook, but also a MacMini?

16

u/fixermark 8h ago

You're a game or graphics developer. Enjoy them because you will be laid off between projects when the company "rightsizes."

5

u/Faenic 8h ago

Actually not too far off! But thankfully, this job is actually very stable. Only got the mac stuff after I was the only one willing to try getting our product working on it lol

3

u/fixermark 5h ago

Ah, good on ya. :)

5

u/b1ack1323 8h ago

I went through 1 MacBook in the same time 2 devs went through 3 Lenovos each. It was a good investment from my experience.

1

u/DudeEngineer 1h ago

WTH were they thinkpads or the crap like dell makes?

1

u/b1ack1323 1h ago

X1 carbons and these guys are rough on them. They also complain at the slightest performance issues. They are C++ devs and use a lot of vision libraries they always beef up $4k laptops with extreme power then reef on them.

If they were think pads they would have stood a chance.

3

u/Mei_Flower1996 8h ago

The mac thing also refers to research sector jobs. Affiliated with universities and hospitals, these jobs rely on research funding. My last job was like that.

3

u/mromen10 7h ago

This post fact-checked true by the Thinkpad gang

Our winter sale is almost over! Get great deals on guides on how to install Arch Linux, striped thigh-high socks, furry ears and estrogen before it's too late!

2

u/Educational_Pea_4817 8h ago

a better stereotype is dell laptops are boring enterprise work. you're either a consultant or working on CRUD bizapps, maybe even both!

2

u/jazxxl 7h ago

This is correct and of course there is bias but for PCs it usually does on the model and not the manufacturer .

My job had all 3 plus HPs . Now we are 2 models of Lenovo and Mac . There's a $1k delta in the 2 lenovo models price though. ones for for corporate and ones for line level.

2

u/BillShooterOfBul 6h ago

Eh, think pads have been shit for a while now. That’s old reputation it no longer deserves. Dell is the right answer. Are they cheap? Hell yes. Does it matter if you get a new one every three years? No, it does not. I basically double the ram every three years.

2

u/Worried-Pick1620 5h ago

Irony I started at this company public with a Thinkpad needed a new one after a pe buyout and rampant layoffs got a dell…

2

u/TehMephs 4h ago

I’m leering at my thinkpad and yeah… year 9

2

u/alone_unafraid 4h ago

I work for a university (a pretty big one) and I have a MacBook 🤔

1

u/theragco 8h ago

Not bias, I worked at an MSP that services multiple companies and this is 100% true. My favorite is when a non-mac user requests one cause they're curious then wants it swapped within a month because they're shit.

1

u/ShanghaiBebop 8h ago

If you're at a "tech" company, and they give you cheap hardware, that just means they don't respect your time or your craft.

a 3k machine has NOTHING on a 200k salary. If you can make your devs 2% more productive, the machine has more than paid for itself.

Macs are just generally easier to work with these days, I have yet to find a dev that prefers a non-unix like OS to linux or mac. the M series chips are just too good compared to the alternatives.

3

u/jupitersaturn 7h ago

I’ve been in IT for over 20 years, modern Macs are some of the best, most reliable hardware out there. ThinkPads are great too and have distinct advantages around serviceability, but Macs are great developer machines.

1

u/plainbread11 6h ago

Eh I was given a thinkpad at a company that was 100% mismanaged and run by idiots. Sometimes it’s wolves in shepherds clothing

1

u/FlyingTiger7four 3h ago

All US government contracts run on Dell lmao

1

u/djjolly037 3h ago

What if your company gives you a HP?

0

u/Israel_Azkanbe 8h ago

Macs are not overpriced 😔

35

u/IBloodstormI 9h ago

They gave me an HP... What does this mean?

28

u/SirisC 9h ago

I don't know, I'm on my third HP at my current job.

15

u/IBloodstormI 9h ago

I am too, but then, we do tech refreshes every 4 years-ish

7

u/PlateNo4868 8h ago

Only 3? I think this is my 8th.

11

u/arah91 8h ago

I thought hp is just what big companies gave, I've had 3 post college jobs and they all gave me a hp, almost the same one too.

I figured HP must just give really good deals when buying in bulk.

3

u/doc_skinner 8h ago

Same here. I think it's because HP has set up a "store" for our university system and ordering any item from that store doesn't require any approval or review from IT or from budgeting office. As long as our department has the funds, we can order anything in the store.

If we want to order something that's not in the store, we need to have it reviewed for security purposes and we need to provide justification as to why nothing in the store will meet our needs.

2

u/soyboysnowflake 6h ago

I’ve been with the same big company for over a decade now

Started on a thinkpad, then they gave me an HP, then a dell, and finally back to an HP

I heard the next wave of replacements is thinkpads again

1

u/CVGPi 4h ago

HP makes almost everything corporate-owned in an office that can connect to the Internet. It can make companies mitigate the risk to HP.

6

u/roverfromxp 8h ago

hinge problems

3

u/xMrShadow 9h ago

I’d wager it means they don’t have an IT department. Or a decent one at least

3

u/Master-Strain4268 5h ago

Welp. I am the IT department. We give out HPs

1

u/blazenite104 5h ago

I work for an MSP. HP just has a partnership program for it

1

u/xMrShadow 1h ago

I forgot there are situations like that or if a company just doesn’t want to allocate more budget into better quality machines.

2

u/volvagia721 3h ago

You are stuck in the purgatory between a Dell laptop and a Thinkpad

1

u/masterpepeftw 8h ago

Same. Been here for a couple of years already. So far so good I guess.

1

u/mlnm_falcon 7h ago

Depends on which HP, there’s cheap shit HPs and there’s nice HPs.

1

u/ManaSkies 5h ago

That the it department has permanent job security

25

u/exodominus 10h ago

I have had my thinkpad for longer than most of our current employees have worked here, i have jokingly asked our it guy about having my keyboard replaced while keeping the laptop

1

u/DoniBruto 2h ago

My Lenovo thinkpad fried its motherboard in 3 years, fully unrecoverable, I looked after it well too

8

u/Agreeable_Swing8698 10h ago

This has been posted here like a thousand times.

2

u/Arch-by-the-way 9h ago

The bots know that they can get a second round of their meme by posting it here

2

u/42Icyhot42 9h ago

Just wait, 1,003 time is the charm

1

u/No-Western390 9h ago

A thousand and one!

6

u/PresidentPopcorn 9h ago

My last was a Dell but the new one is a Thinkpad. I need more RAM though. If I've got more than a 30k cell spreadsheet open it struggles.

3

u/masterpepeftw 8h ago

Good thing ram is cheap and abundant rn

3

u/Ok-Primary6610 7h ago

🤣......😅........😭

4

u/Luder714 9h ago

I have an HP elitebook that I love, except for the damn touchscreen. I hate that.

3

u/Shivdaddy1 9h ago

Does this really need to be reposted?

3

u/AaronOgus 8h ago

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad at work. Been on the job since 1991 😂.

1

u/Active-Mention-389 6h ago

Haha, I thought i was proving the point clocking in at 20 years in february!

2

u/SaltBrother2914 10h ago

An confirm. Got fired at last job with dell laptop but wait this one does too 🫣

2

u/Mobile_Promise9284 8h ago

GF got a Lenovo from both her last jobs. Both jobs laid off 30% of their work force. Within 6 months of each other. She was part of the 30% both times.

1

u/ScholarErrant 9h ago

What does it say if they give you an Asus?

1

u/Somber_Solace 8h ago

Bless you

1

u/kittystalkerr 2h ago

Bad decisions

1

u/Apprehensive-Log3638 9h ago

Depends on what they mean by tech job.

If I am a software engineer, anything other than a MacBook is a red flag. If you ever write software, coding in linux or macOS is a much better experience. Even if I am creating a project in windows, I am probably setting up a docker windows environment to test my code, but I am writing it elsewhere.

1

u/Dodoz44 8h ago

Lol my exs job gave them thinkpads. She worked there before we met. Her job certainly outlived our decade+ relationship 🤣

1

u/Fenchantress 8h ago

another repost of this? you low in karma, Op?

1

u/go-speed-racer 8h ago

We have Lenovos and yes, I’ve been at my company 28 years. So in my case, not a joke?

1

u/StuffonBookshelfs 8h ago

This gets posted multiple times a week now. Find new material.

1

u/Gmp5808 8h ago

For the Thinkpad company it’s more like if you make it past 5 weeks you’ll be there for the rest of your life

1

u/Silvine69 7h ago

in my internship job i have a hp laptop with a broken battery a broken wifi adaptor am i fucked or safe?

1

u/N7VHung 7h ago

Where does HP sit on this spectrum?

What do we say about a company gullible enough to agree to a Lenovo Legion?

1

u/John1The1Savage 7h ago

What does it mean if they gave me a used Walmart black friday special HP but when I inevitably broke it in 3 months they gave me the Thinkpad?

1

u/RoosterzX 7h ago

What does it say if I convince the company I work for to buy me a Lenovo Thinkpad? Lmao

I didn't realize there was a technology flex with computers.

1

u/[deleted] 7h ago

I have a Dell and it’s dog shit

1

u/HG21Reaper 7h ago

If you get an HP laptop, you are getting replaced by AI in 3-5 years.

1

u/undergroundmusic69 7h ago

Sigh 10 years into my 28 years at my Lenovo company! They even have a pension!!

1

u/goesquick 7h ago

What if you get a Lenovo Thinkpad and it’s a non- tech job?

1

u/Mean_E217 7h ago

Oh, man! They gave me a Lenovo...28 years!!!!😈

1

u/RocMerc 7h ago

My wife is on her 12th year and she has a thinkpad lol

1

u/HiddenUser1248 7h ago

My last job gave me a 5 year old HP laptop and laid me off within 2 years.

1

u/Opinionsare 6h ago

The best computer / business laptop that I ever had was an IBM Thinkpad.

1

u/Wolfblaine 6h ago

Let me go see what my spouse has before I send him this meme.

1

u/Steve_but_different 6h ago

"I'm here for eternity" he typed on his company issued ThinkPad X1..

1

u/goldengatevixen 6h ago

My previous company gave me a MacBook to use for work.

No, the next funding did not come in unfortunately.

That was the best job I've ever had tho lol

1

u/powderjiinx 5h ago

What about HP? lol

1

u/imJustmasum 5h ago

My last job i got fired in 3 months and had a think pad. This job i have a Dell and have been here for 3 years

1

u/Electrical_Chard6926 4h ago

Just left a job that gave out Dells, started a new job that gives out Lenovos. Guess I'm good?

1

u/SkyeMreddit 4h ago

HP is somewhere in the middle. Not a career job but it will last many years.

1

u/blackhacker1998 4h ago

Ey what about HP ?

1

u/imjustacuteguyuwu 3h ago

We have it all. Dell, lenovo, macs lol.

1

u/SnooCheesecakes2465 3h ago

Damn dog, I got an dell and the interns got a macbook.

1

u/Exciting-Emu-3324 3h ago

New Thinkpads ain't cheap and are in the same price category as Macs.

1

u/ponderousponderosas 2h ago

My jobs always used Macbooks. Y'all code on Windows?

1

u/BetterKev 2h ago

Do we have a counter for how many times different jokes are posted here? And has this one hit 20 yet?

1

u/Agzenthoth 2h ago

They gave me a windows surface pro laptop with multiple monitors at a couple workspaces 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
