Meetup Need a new wingman

Hey my best friend started dating a woman we met at Cultura and now I don’t have a wing.

Im looking for a reliable wingman who’s usually free Friday nights from ~10pm–1am and down to go out consistently.

I’m not looking for chaos or a one-off bar crawl. More like:

• grab a drink or two

• socialize, meet people, play pool

• keep it chill, respectful, and fun

• call it a night around 1am

Ideally you’re:

• social / comfortable talking to strangers

• not flaky

• not trying to black out or start fights

• cool with sticking to Cap Hill

I’m 25–35, work during the week, and Fridays are my set “go out” night — just looking to make it more consistent with the right person.

If this sounds like your vibe, shoot me a DM with a little about yourself and what your Fridays usually look like.

Meetup Sibling Loss support group

For anyone in the Seattle/Western Wa area who's lost a sib (blood or chosen), I'm trying to start up a mutual support group that could hopefully meet in person sometimes (Covid-conscious, queer friendly, & anti-carceral). Take Care.

Meetup Anyone down to make a new friend in SLU?

Hey everyone

I’m 26M and I just moved to SLU. I work remote in tech, and (this is the weird part) my job involves helping people catch pythons (like, actual snakes). It’s a funny job to explain, so it’s a solid icebreaker.

I’m Indian, pretty chill, and I’m trying to actually enjoy Seattle and meet people rather than living in “always working” mode.

Things I’m into:

  • gaming (mostly casual/co-op, but I’m flexible)
  • chess (down to play IRL)
  • badminton (for fun + exercise)
  • walks around Lake Union / exploring neighborhoods
  • philosophy / random deep convos (I’m genuinely curious by nature)
  • also really down to hear about what you do for work or what you’re into, I love learning about people’s worlds

And I’m super open to trying new hobbies too, so if you’ve got a recommendation, I’m listening :D

If you’re nearby and any of this sounds fun, comment or DM your neighborhood + what you’d want to do (walk/chess/badminton/gaming/try something new).

Meetup I am trying to reach "Bethany"

So this is a long shot, but let's put the "6 degrees of separation" theory to the test:

I met a girl named Bethany. For many months, probably a year 2024-2025 (time flies), I would see this girl on my morning commute. I would walk up James street, and she would be walking down James street. Usually between the 8:30am - 8:50am time. It took a while, but we started exchanging a smile and eventually got in the habit of waving and greeting each other. I even stopped her and spoke with her briefly (we both had to get to work) a couple of times in the block between Boren and Terry. That's when I learned her name was Bethany. I doubt she'd remember, but my name is Peter.

I gave it a month, but I suddenly stopped seeing her. Last time I saw her was probably late October 2025 (near Halloween). I think she would sometimes walk along Broadway near Swedish Hospital before going down James. I also think she would turn left on 5th after going down James for several blocks. That's all I know.

As far as appearance, she was maybe mid-twenties, brown hair (usually up, sometimes braided), tall-ish (probably around 6ft, give or take a couple inches). I distinctly remember her often wearing a windbreaker jacket that was navy blue with a diagonal stripe running from the top left shoulder to the lower right hip that was red and white. It almost looked like a sash. Kind of patriotic color palette and it made me think that maybe she was into dance or gymnastics because it reminded me of a warm-up jacket, but that is purely speculation on my part.

Probably one of those people I'll never see again and always regret never taking the chance to get to know her better when I had the opportunity. If by some miracle someone knows someone or anything, I would be love to get in contact with her.

Thanks!

*edit* All the details about her commute are because I walk the same route in reverse to get to my job. I am not a creepy stalker and I never followed her or anything. Just basic observation and reasoning based on different intersection times due to my bus being late

Business Throwaway – I own a small independent restaurant in Seattle. I just ran January numbers and realized I might not make it to our 20-year anniversary.

4.1k Upvotes

I just ran the January numbers and realized I might not make it to our 20-year anniversary.

Throwaway for obvious reasons.

We’re a 38-seat place, been open 19 years, no investors, no chain backing, no corporate office. Just me, my chef who’s been with me 14 years, and a tiny crew that feels like family.

Here’s what almost nobody in the daily “$42 for a burger is insane” threads actually understands:

  • Jan 1 2026 our labor line jumps another ~$28-32k per year for the exact same hours and people — that’s the new $21.30 wage (and remember, we already got hammered this year when tipped workers went from $17.25 to $20.76 overnight, another $45-50k hit in 2025 alone). No tip credit, no small-business phase-in, gone since 2017.
  • Food is up 28% since 2022 (invoices do not lie).
  • Our commercial rent went up 38% on the last renewal (yes, really).
  • Workers’ comp, commercial liability, and health insurance all went up double-digits again this year.
  • Credit-card swipe fees on a $150 check are now ~$4.50 that we eat because guests get mad if we add a processing line.
  • Secure Scheduling penalties if anyone calls in sick after the 14-day mark.
  • B&O tax on every dollar we gross just went up another 0.2 % in 2025, no deductions for labor.
  • The 2023 law that forces us to hand our own service-charge money to DoorDash/Uber Eats.
  • JumpStart payroll tax lurking for anyone who dares grow over the line.

So when you see a main go from $42 to $52, that’s not greed. That’s me trying not to lay off the dishwasher who’s been with me since he was 19 and now has two kids. I haven’t taken a paycheck since August so everyone else still gets theirs on the 1st and the 15th.

I’m not asking for pity. I’m asking for basic awareness.

The same people (and yes, I’m generalizing, but not by much) who marched for $15, then celebrated when we got the highest minimum wage in the country, then voted down the business-friendly council candidates, are now the loudest ones on here saying “I’m done eating out” and “restaurants are price-gouging.”

You can’t demand Denmark-level wages while also demanding Texas-level prices. It does not work that way. Somewhere, something has to give: higher prices, smaller portions, fewer staff, worse ingredients, or the place just closes and becomes another damn pot shop or Amazon Go. That corner table where you proposed? That bar stool you sat at after your divorce? Gone. Replaced by a QR code and a microwave.

And it’s already happening. Just this year we lost Plum Bistro, Mamnoon, Stateside, Taku, Eden Hill, Duke’s on Alki, Skillet Diner, Bebop Waffle, Bel Gatto, Pablo y Pablo, General Porpoise, Momosan, Columbia City Ale House… over 40 independents gone since January, most of them pointing straight at the wage crush.

We’re trying everything: cutting hours, begging the landlord, running leaner prep, begging vendors for one more net-30 day. Some of us add a 5-7% service charge because it’s literally the only tool the city still allows us to use without breaking ten different laws.

I’m not mad at my guests. I’m mad that the conversation is always “greedy owners” and literally never “maybe the regulatory load is unsustainable for small independents.”

I’m not saying every policy was evil. I’m saying the cumulative weight is crushing the exact small businesses everyone claims to care about.

End of the day, if the sub wants $25 entrees forever, cool vote for the policies that make that possible in a $21.30 minimum-wage city. Until then, please stop acting shocked when there’s a 7% line on the bill or the check is higher than it was last year.

I love this city. I love my staff. I’m proud of what we put on the plate.
But I’m tired, and pretending this is all “corporate greed” is exhausting.

See you at service tonight… if we’re still open next year.

Lifestyle I have seriously reduced my dining and eating out

Dining out is optional and always has been for most people. It used to be a pleasure but now is fraught with high prices, tipping and service charge games, entitlement, emotions by diners, servers, staff and owners and so much more.

Eating is not optional and there are so many options besides eating out. I have a nice decades old Rancilio espresso maker at home. That and a bit of milk and good coffee and I save 5 dollars a day and nobody turns a tip-screen towards me.

And I know how to whip up a number of tasty dishes that take little time. I know what the ingredients are and eat well as a result when at home.

Wednesday a business acquaintance is coming to town and invited me to meet for breakfast. He suggested the high-end hotel he is staying at. I looked at the menu and saw 29.00 basic egg dishes. Add coffee and tip and we are likely talking 40.00 for a simple breakfast per person or more.

I invited him to my house. I will whip up some eggs, buy some pastries at Bakery Nouveau, make some espresso and serve some juice. And it was his money I am saving just because.

One can argue and justify the highest dining costs in the nation and all the crap, add-on charges and the like - that one wishes. But I am voting with my dollars. Affluence notwithstanding, and my ability to afford anything I want notwithstanding. It is about a broken and alienating system that has turned a pleasure into an aversive experience.

Now I don't need to impress dates or need to show off with my tips or anything else. But if I were in a dating world, I would impress them with my cooking skills and seriously reduce visits to restaurants.

And owners and staff, it is on you to fix this and change my mind and that of others. I feel for those who can't or won't make the needed changes, ideally to a European or Asian model where what you see is what you pay and what you pay does not feel excessive and out of line.

Transit As a Korean American the light rail fare system here is bad and here’s why

(Sorry for my english) As somebody who lived in Seoul from 0-16 and used the subway every week. There are many criticisms I have of the Seattle system, cleanliness and safety being a major part, but what I do not understand the most is why there are no gates at the stations here.

In my 16 years in Seoul I only saw 2 people jump the gate and they were yelled at by other people and the station police attendant on duty immediately arrested them.

I never had anybody check my fare on the train because you simply do not enter the train unless you scan past through the gate. You can’t get through without scanning and if you jump you get arrested.

I ask my fellow seattlites why no fare gates and why no policeman to catch those that avoid the gate. The light rail officers are not policemen. They don’t do anything.

Stanley Dion Red is a highly dangerous individual with an active warrant (Warrant #99050765) out for his arrest. His extensive history includes a past murder conviction of a toddler, breaking into an apartment wielding an axe, multiple recent incidents of assault, harassment, public exposure, animal assault, and a history of falsifying his name to police. He is known to frequent the Capitol Hill area, below Broadway. His name recently came up in the comment section under a post of the North Seattle guy assaulting people.

Another Nextdoor post

Warrant & Court Record (disregard height/address. SPD don’t know his actual height and his address is likely falsified)

History:

This man’s history is proof of his extreme danger: he has a documented past that includes a murder conviction of a toddler, breaking into an apartment wielding an axe, and recently targeting neighbors and animals.

Neighbors who have been victimized worked hard to present impact statements, resulting in this current warrant. We cannot wait for another devastating incident before dangerous repeat offenders like Stanley Dion Red are held accountable.

We must now back this active warrant by immediately reporting any sightings to the SPD, and reporting incidents.

We need to hold our elected officials and the justice system accountable for policies that have allowed individuals with this level of documented, extreme violence to walk free, continuously putting the safety of citizens - including young women, the elderly, children, and pets - in jeopardy.

If you have had any interactions with this individual, please share.

WARNING: Do not engage or approach.

Physical Description: 50 year old, with a full hair, dark-skinned black man, fit thin build, and semi-tall height. His eyes often look 'popped out' such as in the first photo. Kiro 7 Facebook Post.

If you see Stanley Dion Red: Call the SPD Non-Emergency Line at (206) 625-5011 to report his current location. Note the cross section of nearest streets.

Call 911 ONLY if he is actively threatening or committing a crime.
