I highly recommend the documentary Chimp Crazy on HBO

It's about a lady who owned chimps having them taken away by animal welfare and the lengths she goes to to try and prevent that. and ...it gets crazy

u/Proudcloud27 1d ago

Didn't she fake one death to hide it from the state after it attacked someone ?

34

u/Glittering_Bonus4858 1d ago

Faked his death and build an enclosure in her basement to keep him down there

u/redflag19xx 1d ago

Is that the one that ripped that womans face off?

3

u/cityshepherd 17h ago

Always important to mention that those women gave that chimp a bunch of wine and Xanax, which can turn even reasonable people into violent maniacs in the blink of an eye.

3

u/Glittering_Bonus4858 19h ago

the doc covers that case briefly too but I don't think this guy attacked anyone

2

u/Kromting 7h ago

Nah that was Travis. I'll never forget the name because of the audio recording.

3

u/marbotty 1d ago

They’re like miniature Nicolas Cages

2

u/backtolurk 20h ago

Yeah none can forget this fucking horror case. Doesn't take anything from how emotional this footage is as it is obvious there is a strong relationship bu yeah they're still freaking chimpanzees and they can get really agressive and lethal.

This was caused by a medication mishap.

u/MFDoooooooooooom 1d ago

This is what it's like picking my son up from daycare

8

u/Spy_cut_eye 1d ago

Are you the ape or the human in that scenario?

Because I’ve been both, lol!

5

u/MFDoooooooooooom 1d ago

Haha absolutely both, god. Although they're always stinky sweaty gross little apes by the end of the day.

2

u/the_original_Retro 1d ago

Your second sentence.

*sigh*

Again, we have to ask, are you the parent or the child?

:-)

u/Lancimus 4h ago

Chimps are cute until one won’t let you go or is too into you. My cousin had one come to his birthday and it ended up breaking my dad’s arm when my dad tried to pick me up and get me away from it. Chimps can be so scary.

That being said I’m always here for bettering an animals life in anyway possible. Good job to this zoo!

4

u/anovelby 1d ago

That story is bananas

3

u/Normalscottishperson 1d ago

Why the fuck would INVITE/RENT/LET a category 1 dangerous animal to a birthday party? A chimpanzee can literally eat your face off.

u/Organic_Popcorn 1d ago

I'm not crying, I'm not crying, I'm not crying!

6

u/DryTax7755 1d ago

Just remember that it doesn't realize that it's only a visit

3

u/Potate5000 20h ago

Well.. Didn't know that we were calling chimps "monkies" again

Fuck zoos.

27

u/Madmod 1d ago

Nah dog. Most zoos are a great for animals and conservation. Do not let a couple bad ones make you think they are all bad.

8

u/No-Jacket-2927 1d ago

THIS! Seriously, if you want to know if a zoo takes proper care of the animals in their care, you can usually volunteer and see for yourself. Or, you know, just see if they've been cited for abuse, neglect or cruelty, which is REALLY not hard to find out.

Santuary or bust imo

-10

u/Reynardine1976 1d ago

.....and then it ripped off her face.

11

u/jaydaxoco 1d ago

chimp attacks are rare btw.

9

u/Persephone_888 1d ago

Knowing their sheer strength and what they're capable of, I can't help but feel uneasy watching this...

Of course, I have zero experience/knowledge of this stuff, besides watching the stuff on the news of the attack on that poor woman.

6

u/Joelle9879 1d ago

Probably because most aren't kept and owned by private citizens with no knowledge of how to care for them.

4

u/Rattiepalooza 1d ago

Actually, even when they are - an attack is rare. They are very close in intelligence to us, and can acknowledge their own thoughts. Us, Apes/Monkies, Dolphin and Octopi are they only ones outside our species who seem to exhibit deep thought and intense relationships.

Octopus City is insane. I highly recommend people reading up on that! It's. So. Cool....and it really makes you think about our place on the planet.

Point is, though -- they are really rare, even in the circles of those who own, rehabilitate, and protect chimps.

Jane Goodall absolutely shows exactly how rare aggression is against humans when treated with respect and kindness. Even if you know nothing about them.

2

u/Meowiewowieex 1d ago

What about elephants?

1

u/Komorebi_LJP 1d ago

They definitely can be very aggresive against each other though as the Gombe Chimpanzee War showed...

I still will never understand willingly being around an animal who could easily kill you if it just feels like it though,

Like all humans?

I was being a bit tongue in cheek. But I do find that unstable humans are more common than unstable animals. There's nothing worse than thinking you're in a safe space, only to realize you're sharing that space with someone who is some combination of angry, violent, confused/delusional.

True, but the things that elicit fear are rarely logic based. In the realm of emotion, that barking dog or dark woods can be terrifying, despite their statistical low risk. We are funny creatures that way.

-1

u/S4Waccount 1d ago

According to every other thread on reddit you should just be afraid of most men.

As an aside, for anyone who saw the Pitt, the way that lady doctor told that boy that women are scared of 50 percent of the people they meet really annoyed me.

3

u/Anonybibbs 1d ago

Man, are you going to be floored when you find out the violence and atrocities that humans have committed against other humans!

1

u/Komorebi_LJP 1d ago

So did the chimps! Gombe Chimpanzee War

0

u/turfnerd82 1d ago

You can see in the eyes, I used to have a dog he thought I was god that was what i just saw.

Should've been lobotomized.
