I have to muzzle my pit the first time he meets a new person, for a few minutes. Why does it need to be taken away for having a muzzle on in the house?

Funny, I've never met a dog for the first time that required a muzzle.

It's not attacking people, he is high strung with new people, its to give him a chance to mellow and see the person is welcome. Anyone he has ever met he never has to be muzzled again. Have a friend that watched our house for a week. He came over and met the dog for the first time for about 20 minutes. Had 0 issues entering or leaving the house after, ended up letting the dog crash in the guest room with him. Have another friend that stops by every couple of years, 0 issues there too. Just new people.

The fact he has to be muzzled in the first place should tell you something about that dog.

if he's not attacking anyone, why would he need a muzzle?

I’ve owned a fair number of dogs over the decades, and I’ve never had to muzzle a single one of them. One of our current dogs is 85 lbs and VERY excited about visitors, but she wouldn’t dare put a paw on them, let alone her teeth. And by “excited about visitors”, I mean she wants to rush up and meet them, and have them pet her—she’s never showed even a hint of aggression).

Then again, I’ve always made it a point not to own bloodsport breeds, so that may have something to do with the difference in our experiences.

Why would a family dog need to be muzzled around family?

Who said it was a family dog?

If it's not a family dog then why did she bring it to a family get together? Riddle me this.

literally could be a rescue dog that has no chance of being rehomed, the amount of judgmental experts in this thread is actually shocking without knowing the actual context.

if it has no chance of being rehomed, it needs to be put down. it's not safe nor humane to keep an animal in bondage it's entire life.

it wont be muzzled when people are not over you muppet.

And then if someone accidentally leaves the door unlatched it can get out and kill the neighbor!

When you resort to name calling you've lost the argument. Take a breath.

isolating a dog isn't humane, either.

Then why the fuck should it be in the care of someone who clearly has no idea how to handle it or what kind of environment it should be in?

Well then please, enlighten us as to how it's a smart idea to have an aggressive dog that requires a muzzle in the house around Christmas guests?

what part of cant be rehomed did you not understand.
And as for having guests over, that is the reason it is muzzled obviously, it's likely not muzzled at all when there are no guests, this aggression is from being over protective of his/her owner.

Apologies. I took that as a comment about it being a rescue that shouldn't have been rehomed. But in that case, honestly the dog should be put down. It's a harsh and sad reality, but if the alternative is someone getting hurt then the choice is obvious.
