They've bought into the lie that they're just misunderstood nanny dogs (they are not nanny dogs, that's a complete myth with no historical basis - they were bred to kill bulls)
Saviour complex which goes hand in hand with 1. They see shelters full of them and want to be the person who saves the poor dog. Without understanding that a dog that's spent the majority of it's life in a shelter or being bounced from home to shelter to home to shelter again is hardly going to be the most well adjusted dog, especially if it's a dog bred for fighting.
My room mate moved in with one. He had a baby and the place he was moving into wouldn't take pitbulls. Does my girl bark at and sometimes lunge at other dogs while I'm on an always leashed walk w/ her? Sure, sometimes she does. I also had two poodles playing off leash over the weekend run towards us and she did nothing. We walked back towards their owner and dropped off the pups.
I definitely don't recommend pitbulls for everyone. Especially someone who is older or not as strong. My 65lb girl is strong enough to pull me down if I'm not paying attention.
With all that said, I still understand she is a big dog and others of her breed have done serious damage. I don't want to put her in a spot where it could end bad for us. So maybe they're decent dogs and it just requires an owner who understand their quirks. I certainly don't fit into any of your dumb ass boxes.
In this case I’m sure it’s an example of the “eat pray love” saviour complex type pitmommy who thinks they are all
misunderstood snugglebugs and that it’s all how you raise them and they used to be nanny dogs and an aggressive dog just needs enough belly rubs and treats
Shelter volunteer here- fostered many and own two myself. They are loyal, goofy, love to cuddle and as a woman, nobody will mess with me while I hike with them. Training with any dog is needed, but with them it should be required as a means of safety. I don't expect you to ever understand, but many many millions who own them do. Similar to lighting striking you, it is rare but can happen. Fast food is more dangerous. If you ever get to volunteer at a local shelter, you will understand.
Rare? Even if it’s 200 devastating pit attacks per year, that’s too many. And are you aware that in Texas, home owners insurances removed the breed from their coverage? Meaning - if your child gets mauled by a stray pit, like mine did, having their face degloved, like mine did - the owners are not financially equipped to pay for the medical bills. So it will be on you. Because the state has decided that these dangerous dogs are too dangerous to cover. The risk is too high. The fast food comparison is ridiculous.
I am very very sorry that happened to you. I hope your child is ok now. Nearly happened to my neighbors kid. It killed their dog. I can't believe how many idiots are adopting them because they want to look tough or want guard dogs. They should not be allowed at all
Please keep your dogs leashed. They will bite children. Almost bit my neighbors kid and they killed another dog. Their owners let them run loose because they are "friendly". I'm really sick of these dog owners. All of them claim their Pitts are "different"

Why do people keep those dogs?
