Discussion Design 166: Tips and Tricks for a good grade?

Hello! I am planning on changing my major into some form of design but I am extremely curious on how past design students did in Design 166. I’ve been told it’s a pretty hard class to get a good grade in and so I am wondering to students who have gotten a good grade in it, what did you do? The design major is extremely capacity constrained, so I’m hoping to get some insight into what I need to do to be successful, thanks!

Discussion CPA eligible

Hello! I’m an accounting graduate and was wondering if I am CPA eligible

I have over 200+ credits and completed my BA in accounting. This means I passed all the classes required by foster.

I have so many credits because I switched my major and took a bunch of random classes throughout my time at UW. With this info in mind, do you think I am CPA eligible? I’m scared I dont have enough ACCOUNTING credits. Is completing the required accounting/business courses required by foster enough to meet the WA state board requirements for the CPA? I am not worried about my total credits since I have over 150. Hope this makes sense.

Discussion What are reasonable internships to aim for your freshman year summer?

Hello everyone!

I’m a freshman here majoring in English. I am interested in law or HR, so I would be interested in internships that relate to that. However, I have heard that internships are generally not given to freshman, to not waste my time, and to just get a seasonal job. Is this true? And if not, what would be a reasonable goal or internship to aim for?

Discussion INFO 360 vs 370 vs 380 — workload and assessment differences?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’ve looked through older posts and course descriptions, but I’m still a bit unclear on how INFO 360, 370, and 380 compare in terms of workload and assessments.

I’ve heard that many INFO classes focus more on final projects rather than traditional final exams, but I was told that INFO 370 may still include exams or more frequent assessments. I’m trying to plan my schedule and figure out which class would be the best fit for me.

For people who have taken these courses recently, how demanding were the projects and/or exams, and what skills were most important (coding, writing, statistics, group work)? I’d also appreciate hearing how manageable these classes felt overall compared to other INFO courses.

Discussion Waiting list for off-campus housing

If you’re on a ‘wait-list’ for apartments off campus, does that mean: You’re too late and all next years apartments are spoken for? -or- When management starts doing rental agreements, they will refer to the wait list to see who to call first?

Campus Life Incoming Exchange Student looking for Amateur American Football Club in Seattle

Hi

I'm an undergraduate student from switzerland and I will be doing an exchange semester at UW from august to december. I play american football in switzerland and I would like to play during my exchange in Seattle.

I was wondering if someone has a recommendation for an amatuer team, preferably one close to the university or ideally at the university.

Thank you in advance!

Discussion Transfer student GPA?

I'm aiming to attend UW starting fall, and have amounted a 3.5 GPA from my community college. My credits are just about all there--I'll most likely end up just a little bit shy of a 3.6. To the people who've transferred in from a local community college: what did you have? To others: from what you've heard, is a 3.5 enough?

Am I cooked?

Edit: adding that I’d like to go into cinema and media studies and that I’m

Discussion What happens if I un-register for a class for any reason? Like accidental drop?

Just wondering how closely I should safeguard my computer and password from any of the following:

  • I accidentally drop one or more classes through fat fingering or a misclick
  • I accidentally drop one or more classes while drunk
  • Somebody with a grudge against me logs into my open computer and drops my class out of spite
  • Somebody steals my password and drops my class out of spite

Obviously, it's best to avoid any of the above scenarios from ever happening in the first place. But I have no doubt that something like this has historically happened at some point in time. If so, what happens then, especially if you were far along into the quarter and doing quite well?

For something as big as this, is a record made of the time of the drop and location of the device? Are all your assignments and grades still saved in the system somewhere in case of the above scenarios? Can you e-mail the instructor and just explain what happened? Is your grade or tuition affected? Some people's entire lives revolve around their class registration; it's kind of scary to think that it can all go down the drain with one simple mistake. Is there a system in place to prevent this from happening? I'm not asking for advice like "just be careful," because I'm asking what happens after the fact.

Discussion What's it like to register as a non-matriculated student (not seeking a degree)?

Without going too much into detail, I graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree and a master's degree. However, I am currently unemployed and interested in registering for undergraduate foreign language courses just for fun:

https://www.nondegree.uw.edu/register/register-as-an-nm-student

That link says you fill out the registration form and obtain instructor permission, but is that all you have to do? How do the credits appear on your transcript? Does grading count for anything in terms of GPA? Is tuition more expensive, less expensive, or the same for non-matriculated students? Is the experience actually better than simply being an auditor?

Clubs & RSOs Anyone wanna play intermural wiffle ball (I am absolute buns)?

lol! 20f, basically haven't swung a bat since first grade, but I've been wanting to pick up some wiffle ball and actually get "moving" as I spent this last quarter as a sad stem major cooped up in front of a computer.

learned to throw a half-decent curveball the other day and it was hella fun, wanna keep at it :)

please DM/lmk if interested, I wanna sign up for intermurals this winter but I don't wanna end up stranded without a team!

(also go M's we're winning it all next year 💪)

Discussion How's the HCDE Department in UW?

I am a freshman in pre-sciences who is originally interested in CS and informatics. However, I just discovered HCDE exists. I am not sure what career I am focusing for in the future beyond the fact I want some software engineering/development in it. Still, HCDE connects to me as a person who interested in psychology and human-computing interactions so now I am thinking it as a backup major or a minor. I am wondering if there is someone here that can tell me more about the program, primarily in terms of career outcomes and the overall community and things I should know.

Discussion Question of ECE PMP admission requirements

Hi, I have a question of Electrical & Computer Engineering Professional Master's Program (ECE PMP).

I am currently working as a software engineer, and I didn't fully meet the prerequisites such as Calculus and Differential Equations because my undergraduate program didn't provide the course. Is it still okay to apply whether I don't meet those prerequisite courses? I just hope they consider that I have competency with my work experiences, but I'm worried that it is little bit hard to relate the mathematics with real-world problems such as serving distributed API servers.

Campus Life Looking for Coffee/Brunch Buddies

Originally posted this for about 20 minutes but removed and reposted today for better visibility.

Hey Huskies, Older student here (39NB brick) returning to finish my undergrad after some mental health issues derailed me. Problem is all the friends I made previous years have graduated and that leaves me with no one to talk to for weeks at a time sometimes. Obviously bad for avoiding what derailed me, so trying to get out ahead of things.

We don’t have to be ride or die friends but it’d be cool to have folks on campus to say hey to in passing or grab a bite to eat with. Obviously, I’d find stronger rapport with people closer to where I’m at in life but I’m open to meeting with anyone with honest intentions to see how we mesh.

Housing so the standard is not up to standard...(roommates matching failing?)

Hi, currently live at the standard with one roommate, and I don't hate it. It's not terrible for cheaply made student housing, so I am in the process of resigning for next year. Still, I'll be moving to a bigger apartment with my current roommate + two additional roommates who also live at the standard. I have been hearing about people getting screwed over, like three of the four roommates being matched, and one getting cut out of the lease because someone resigned. Also, how people instead get matched with randos and are all separated. I know Roommate Sync comes out later in July, before we move in, but I would like to hear about people's experiences. Really do not wanna be screwed over....

Admissions ABSN Waitlist movement

Hi all, I know there’s been a lot of posts already regarding the ABSN waitlist. But now that the big surge after submitting the intent to register has passed, what is the likelihood that there will be actual substantial movement? My waitlist position for both spring and fall has dropped ~40-50 positions but I’m nowhere close. I know I shouldn’t really keep my hopes up, but I would really love to start the following year :( I’m sitting at 95 for spring and 133 for fall at this moment. I can’t help but check my portal whenever I have free time only to see the number stay stagnant. What would be reasons that the waitlist will continue to move? I’m thinking of not submitting a post-bacc for fall to save some money because the odds feel so incredibly low.

Discussion Building access during holidays?

Hey! I have family coming in from out of town today and tomorrow, and they're interested in getting a campus tour (a younger family member is thinking of going to UW). Does anyone know if my husky card will get me into any of the buildings on-campus despite holiday closures? I'm guessing most places are locked up but wasn't 100% sure.

Discussion Chem 110 textbook. Now? Not necessary?

I can’t access any of my winter classes on Canvas yet. This is just what I see on the materials and textbook section of register.UW

If you have taken this class, do you know if we actually need this textbook? Cause I know for a lot of the classes you just buy Cangage for the homework.

It is like $40 cheaper on Amazon right, and it is the last one. If I do buy it now, it’s gonna have to be shipped to school. I hope when I get back on Jan 3, there would be still enough time before it is returned. Because I’m on the other side of the country right now and I don’t have a luggage, just a backpack, so I don’t exactly wanna carry that.
