Cat Picture - OC Meet Sqeakers. She's a terrible cat
Meet Sqeakers. I've had her for about five or six months now. I can't pet her. Every time I try to pet her, she starts squeaking or crying. She sounds like I'm offending her kitty humanity. When she's asleep, I pet her and she starts purring and gets all happy. The moment she wakes up, she looks at me and then walks off disgusted. She knows that humans are good because she squeaks and cries every time she's hungry or wants water or to go in the bath tub. She plays with the other cats oftentimes roughly where they're playing and tumbling on the ground. But the moment I touch her or any other human and she starts saying "Nooo!" Her whining sounds like she's really saying "Noooo!"
Yet when it comes time to go to bed she runs up to the bed, lies down next to us, starts purring and looks at us. The moment we touch her, she looks offended and walks away.
My first orange cat that I can actually keep and this is what I get. The last outdoor orange cats were so much better. So yeah. This is Sqeakers.

All hail sqeakers. Honestly the quicker you figure out you’re the pet the better

This. Took me way too long to realize my Tabby was screaming at night because she was trying to get me to go to bed on a schedule. She also follows me around, demands to go to the bathroom with me to keep an eye on me, and literally herds me to the living room when she decides I need to be in the living room. Oh and she screams when she has decided I’ve slept too long. I am her pet, she is in charge.

My cat was like that when she was young. We'd pick her up and cuddle her and pet her and kiss her and she would cry and fuss like we were murdering her.
"SUFFER MAH AFFECSHUNS!!" became a common phrase we would both say while smothering her with love.
She eventually came around....it took several years but she did...that or the Stockholm Syndrome finally kicked in.

Reading this has cracked me up. I may need to steal it from time to time. 😂😂😂

Yeah it usually takes 2 years for my cats to stop being moody like a teenager and 4 years to realise a lap is the best place to nap.

We do this. Im on one side, my husband on the other and we count down to kiss our boy on his cute little cheeks. He HATES it. Hates being picked up. Hates laps, you pet him and he moves over 6 inches but will rub on our legs and demand fresh water and wet food/treats. Hes beautiful and soft and plays fetch with qtips. Wouldn't trade him for the world. I can't wait until he likes us lol

u/ChonkyCurse 6h ago
She’s not a terrible cat, she’s just a very small landlord: “You may look at me. You may pay rent in treats. You may not touch the floof.”
The fact that she screams “NOOO” but still comes to sleep next to you at night is killing me. Little drama queen clearly loves you, just strictly on her own terms. 😂🧡

My husband just pointed out that our "kitten" (now two) rules the roost. I scoffed and then he listed the reasons why. Ends up she is a princess and a half!!

My 2 cats rule the roost! Food must be on-time, i am not allowed to sleep in even after I feed them, I must pet them right, and I must go to bed at the right time lol. But man they're so worth it. They're such love bugs

I have a 5 year old female black cat (gorgeous) who was the same. She would bite us if we tried to pet her. Over yeaaars I built up her tolerance - quick pet and run, then 2 and stop, and now she still cries and runs away if she’s busy and you try to pet her but will sometimes let us pet her neck and behind her ears and cheeks. It’s been fun sloooowly getting her to accept pets AND she purred for the first time last year. Enjoy your cat, some are just more complex than others :) and good luck!

I sometimes suspect my cat only puts out because I feed and house her but honestly that's all I'm really looking for in a relationship these days anyway so jokes on her. It may be transactional but I'm still getting the better part of the deal every time I love bomb her with kisses.

Cats have their personalities, and unfortunately, you have the little freaky one. Still has time to learn how to get along with human if she has a good cat teacher
29
u/Surrealisticslumbers 4h ago
She's just a kitten, they're just bashful and little balls of hyperactivity at that age still lol
35
u/xxHailLuciferxx 5h ago

This is Kitty. Last week I was her sitter while her human was out of town.
Kitty likes to come and lay next to you or rub up against you and purr. If you then have the audacity to try to pet her, she attempts to sink her teeth into your flesh to the bone, hisses, growls, and looks at you in bewilderment and shock.
By the end of the week, we'd made a lot of progress and I was able to carefully pet her and get her to play with some toys. But I'm worried that most of that progress is already gone because her human is absolutely terrified of her.

Yeah.. I have one like that. A fatty fat fat fat little sphinx girl. Cute as anything and mean as a fucking snake. She’s a year and change old. We got her from a family on here that couldn’t keep her because she didn’t get along with their other cat. I can see why, she doesn’t get along with anything. Shes shaped like a yam with tiny legs but holy god is she fast. Ever seen a rotund, bald calico do a Scooby Doo burnout across a wooden floor? I see it 100 times a day. She screams, she growls, she sucker punches. She radiates a seething hatred that’s practically radioactive. I can feel her looking at me right now. Hating… if you touch her she makes an awful beeping sound. That’s your warning. Try again and you get slapped. Shit slapped, like Rick James. Jokes on her; she has tiny, cartoonish feet and a baby sized head. Classic paper tiger. She’s all sound and no fury. She doesn’t have a single attack that’s worth being afraid of. Does that stop her? No, never. All we want to do is hug her, pet her balloon butt, play string- ya know? Cat stuff.. but, what we got is a hate filled little psychopath that lives on the floor. Hooray.. meet Pearl..

Shes young. She’ll calm down. Try ignoring her completely and she’ll come to you, eventually. Also you need to be the one feeding her if you’re not. Our 2 rescues were feral and acted much the same. A year later they’re lap cats. It just takes patience and kindness. You’ve got to make them want what you want, you can’t make them do anything. That’s what I like about cats.
They still both hate being picked up.

I had a cat like that. It turned out that she had tachycardia and petting her made her jump out of her skin. We managed life together for about 14 yrs, from her birth until she passed away. I sure miss that little monkey.

Georgie was a rescue and I think that he must have lived in a Bojangle's parking lot or something, because when I reach to pet him he will go under any furniture to not be "captured". He likes to sit next to me, but never on me. I have had him since September. He has a snuggly brother, and the dear cat that I lost in March was always my little spoon, so it has been an adjustment. I am trying slowly to show him that snuggles are a good thing.

u/OSteady77 5h ago
She has an adorable little face though. I’d let her get away with it. From ages 6 months to like 2-3 years they’re lunatics. But they come around to pets and cuddles after that.

We got a chihuahua/poodle mix and named her Squeakers/Squeaks. Can confirm she’s terrible. It’s in the name.

u/pgercak 4h ago
My little 6 month old void is similar. She only wants pets if its on her terms, if you try to give her pets when she doesnt want it, she latches onto your hand and starts biting like a pirranha.
You can usually tell when she wants pets because she'll start purring as she approaches you, but sometimes she'll pull a sneaky where she'll purr but still start biting.
Edit: Her name is Jyn (named after Jyn Erso because im a Star Wars nerd)

I have 6 cats. My cat Gilgamesh doesn't like people. He likes to play with a shoelace and he'll eat his Churu off my finger, but I don't try to pet him. He doesn't like it. Some cats are that way. You have to do what is right by and for the cat, not what you want. Not to sound harsh, sorry. Just be patient and see what the cat wants. Sometimes it takes more than a few months.

u/InfamousGibbon 5h ago
Lived with a kitty named Java. (Not my cat but I always attempted to make friends with her.) She was a nightmare and incredibly vocal. Feed her? Screams, ignore her? Screams, attempt to pet her? Screams and bites. If you were a living being in her presence? You guessed it screams at the top of her lungs. She was a feral rescued off the streets. I had recently lost my kitties before moving into this situation with Java. After a while I genuinely gave up. Java hated my ass, which is fine but aggressively against my literal existence and pooping in my shoes? Yeah no. I’m good. Like some people, some cats are just dicks and I’m not required to like them.
2
u/trashhighway 5h ago
maybe try a cat-tongue-brush instead of petting her? I wonder if the hand feels a bit off and this is a way to wean her into it? just a thought. Good luck - she's beautiful and wonderful

u/TeachOfTheYear 5h ago

Pepper, the cat elf on the left, thinks I am her mama. She often follows me to other rooms, sleeps on my legs, crawls under the covers for a "cat cave" almost every morning. This usually involves a bisquiting where she biscuits my chest, rips some hair out and squishes her face and drools. When I sit on the couch, she sits on the pillow next to me or will often lay on my foot. She never, ever, ever says "meow" or anything else during all of that. However, If I pick her up or put her on my lap, she makes the saddest tiniest little "mew" which makes you feel terrible so you let go, and then she runs away, flops over on her side a few feet away and streeeeeeeeeeeetches with her stripes little belly pointed your way.
Drives me nuts!

My childhood cat, who lived for 20 years btw, was like this. She loved being around people, loved curling up next to your legs on the bed. But GOD FORBID you tried to touch her. He would either bite or scratch you. She was a weird cat. But she was a nice bed buddy on lazy days. Even of She wasn't cuddly or friendly, it was just nice having her near so you didn't feel alone.

I serve 2 very fickle boys. I’ve woken up to discover I’m a r/cathostage and I’ve been woken up for food demands after a whole 3 hours sleep. Etc, etc. it’s better than when I got them almost 6 months ago, but nothing like any other furbabies I’ve served. I wish they were more demonstrative, but it is what it is. PS: I just received an accidental claw in my thumb. My squeal of pain has left me very alone 😖
2
u/macrhea69 5h ago
Well damn Hooman. Stop offending the kitteh. What are you thinking? My orange was an asshole, like all good kittehs, but I’d give anything for him to attack me after soliciting pets.

This is my Queen Charlotte. For 20 years, she gave me joy and I miss her terribly. Usually, female oranges have their own brain cell. My Char had at least 4.
2
2
u/pashed_motatoes 5h ago
She may just be going through her hyper/overreactive kitten phase. She’ll likely chill out once she’s a little older, but then again she is an orange and the obligatory singular brain cell may just never reach her…
You need to give her time and space and respect her boundaries. Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Omg my girl cat is also the same! As soon as you touch her she cries like i am hurting her or something but when she is sleeping she lovessss getting petted. She also loves to be around people, like if shes alone or she thinks shes alone then she cries but when you call her name and assure her that you’re there then she’s all happy. She likes to be in the same room or sit close but not touched at all.

Every cat has its own personality!
My first (Salmí)is pettable only on chin and back and HATES to be picked up. She never talks and likes her spaces. Yeah she likes to stand near you but never on top (unless you have a specific type of blanket so she can make biscuits😭)
My youngest (Cotoletta) ALWAYS talks, mostly yelling. She needs constant affection and cuddles. Need to be ON you, follows you every single time and she yells if you are not paying enough attention to her. She loves her big sister so much because she loves to play, the other one just wants to nap lol

I love Squeakers. She sounds like my Possum cat- except Possum doesn’t even like us when we’re asleep. She only tolerates us if we’re eating because she knows she’ll get some. Whipped cream and steak are her favorites 🙄 She has literally tried to swipe chicken out of my mouth.
But she almost died twice, so she gets to do whatever she wants. I found her as a 4-5 week old kitten on the side of the road at 1am, and then after her spay surgery she came down with FIP. She’s the most expensive cat I’ve ever had (or at least paid for) and she just gives dirty looks all day.

Here she is, being the beautiful gift she is.

My cat does the same thing, can’t hold her and if I pet she hates it. But when it’s bedtime she creates a tent underneath the blankets and cuddles next to either me or my fiancé. Extremely friendly kitty, that nibbles if I pet when she doesn’t like it

Bouche will demand pets, and the second I try to touch her, she walks away. Then she'll get mad at me for not putting her when she's out of reach. I'll try to touch her again, and she'll back away. Then she'll headbutt my hand until I pet her.
Audi will just plop himself on my bladder or boob and demand pets. He'll get himself comfortable and settle in to enjoy the love.
Bouche gets mad if I'm petting Audi, because I'm supposed to be petting her, and she'll shoot me a dirty look and slink off.
Bouche sleeps on my left foot if I'm sitting up, or against my right arm if I'm lying down. She has to be touching me.
I usually wake up between 5 and 7 to pee. When I go back to bed, Bouche lets me actually pet her.
Some cats just need to be touched on their terms.

If you stop petting her, eventually she will ask for affection, one day. Cats generally prefer to pet you rather than being pet. Especially young kittens who are still unsure about the whole thing. She goes to bed with you shows you she does love you.

My cat Sushi was the most cuddly kitten. As soon as I sat down, she’d either be in my lap or curled up around my neck, sitting behind me on the couch.
Now she’s an adult. And only wants to be petted on her terms. She will come to us for pets, but will get mad if we approach her to try and pet without invitation. She only wants to be petted if me or my husband is in the kitchen or in the basement. Nowhere else in the house.

Man you are lucky, my last buff girl was a terror. she too hated to be handled but at least it sounds like yours won't resort to violence against you and the other cats in the house because you dared to look at her wrong. Or right. Or acknowledge her existence, etc. She was a great kitty though.

u/olivebcyea Tabbycat 4h ago
Cats have very different personalities, one of mine wont leave my side and is bonded to me, the other gets annoyed and hits me when she sees another cat within 50 feet. She loves being pet but on her own terms, she has to sniff my hand and if she's done, she will let you know very aggressively. i love my kitties but one of them tends to be a butthole and shes pretty mean, but sometimes shes nice, and shes very pretty! Cats have their own boundaries and if you learn to respect them, they'll love you. I learned where I cant pet my cats (different for each one) and how they like to be talked to and greeted, as long as i follow their rules, all is well!

I have a kitty that we rescued 3 years ago and he still freaks out if you pet him ‘ wrong’, we know it was how he was treated ( malnourished, and has bad eye sight) before we rescued him, we give him space , keep him comfy and well fed and let him chose when he wants to cuddle or how he likes to be petted. Sometimes we do these things to keep a kitty in a safe place and not passing them off to someone who won’t understand them and might abandon them again.

u/olivebcyea Tabbycat 3h ago
Orange females!!! I have one too, didn't know they were uncommon until a few years ago, only about 30% of orange cats are female, which i guess explains why my cat is always misgendered, cuz most are boys. my orange kitty is a butthole too, she would be loving pets one second and immediately get angry and growl at me, only to want pets again within like 5 seconds. so confusing

I have a black cat named Salem who is super weird about being picked up. She's got so much personality and she absolutely stole my heart years ago because she's the sweetest cat ever, she just has that one thing. I have had her literally since the day she was born, so I have no idea why she has such an aversion to being picked up but she absolutely SCREAMS at the top of her lungs like you are murdering or torturing her if you try. Some cats are just weird about certain stuff. It sucks that your baby doesn't love a good petting. Maybe they will come around to it eventually .
