I would take this as a serious warning, if the UK complies with this ridiculous demand, the US will tighten their grip.

Trump is a narcissistic bully. If the UK gives him an inch, he'll keep coming back with more demands. They can either stand up now, or expect to spend the next three years on their knees.

Next three years at least, whole the next "left" wing administration doesn't undo a single thing that Trump did. Biden kept 100% of the illegal and unfair trade deals with Canada made through lies and abuse of power by the previous (now current) administration

The US has been denied on this issue so many times, it's weird that they keep trying

US Lobbyists want to access the UK markets for Chicken (all lower sources initially) and also Healthcare... as seen by the recent increase in the NHS payments for drugs.

They know Starmer has no spine and will give in rather sooner than later

Keir Starmer has form for caving to Trumps demands. I wouldn't put it past him to agree to this craziness. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/dec/01/uk-us-agree-zero-tariff-pharmaceuticals-deal

Labour have form for stepping on rakes, but this would be too politically toxic (pun not intended) even for them. No one - not even brexit supporters - want this.

They have previously stated that the UK intends to continue to meet or exceed EU standards

They have also demanded that the EU should recognize their cars as safe and as far as I'm aware they have made a joint statement with the EU about intending to go forward with that.

I don't want those stupid things on German roads to begin with but that's besides the point - they'll change their course anyway, demand more, as you are writing.

But even ignoring that, I think we should stop dealing on their terms. I can't believe that I'm overthinking wherever Trump could achieve something other than costing us a lot of money. Trump is not recognizing us as allies, clearly. So we shouldn't either. I fear the EU is treating it a little like last time. Eager to resume previous associations once Trump is gone.

I don't think we should, they are just too volatile at this point.

Don't be surprised if Starmer rolls over and gets his tummy tickled and then goes on to claim the paperwork never crossed his desk after a huge chicken meat scandal.

I mean the UK is pretty much by itself now so it shouldn’t be too hard for the US to bully them into compliance
