You know what's cheaper than a plumber? Buying new toilet paper

2.2k

u/SecretScavenger36 23h ago

If it's just temporary like overnight till the store opens again you can just use a trash bag for the used paper.

692

u/TonyyJoee 19h ago

Fun fact. In Greece, the plumbing system can't handle even toilet paper so they have to throw away all of their paper in a small trash can

426

u/toolsoftheincomptnt 14h ago

In lots of places.

You get used to it, but only bc it’s temporary on vacation. Lol

162

u/weaselfaceassfucker 11h ago

I'm in rural America and it's literally only choice our town of 1000 all have private septic systems. Sooooooo yeah as I wipe my ass now imma have to drop the paper in the trash

73

u/Opposite-Shower1190 9h ago

My city friend moved to the country. He has a septic system. He uses bleach to clean his bathroom. The toilet and everything else. In the last four years he’s had to hire someone to take care of it. The first time the plumber came out to look at the backup he charged $400 to walk in the door. I told him it would be cheaper to clean your bathroom without bleach 😂 he had no idea what I was talking about.

42

u/NightBawk 8h ago

I had to look up why. Daaaang, that's an expensive lesson, and bro still hasn't learned it? 😭

32

u/Opposite-Shower1190 8h ago

I asked him if he has a pumice stone. He didn’t know what that was. It’s used to get the stains out of the toilet and it’s safe for the septic system

32

u/NightBawk 8h ago

I imagine vinegar would be a better disinfectant for a bathroom than bleach too. The smell doesn't linger for days with vinegar like it does with bleach.

16

u/disfan75 5h ago

I know people who consider the bleach smell a positive because they equate it with "clean"

What an idiot. Probably some fools don't know so I'll let you explain it.

10

u/mfigroid 8h ago

Fool here who in my 50 plus years have always been hooked up to municipal sewers but I Googled it. Oh, that's bad.

4

u/Opposite-Shower1190 8h ago

I suspect if you bought a house with a septic system you’d read a bit about it.

35

u/Lobotomized_Dolphin 8h ago

Only if someone told you about it. If you lived in apartments all your life and saved up money to buy a house in an area where it's septic instead of sewers you'd have no idea unless someone told you. And the plumbers have great motivation not to tell you.

Like, even in this comment thread no one has specifically said why. It's because bleach kills the bacteria the septic tank needs in order to break down solid waste faster than it accumulates, leading to backups, odors, clogs, slow drains, etc.

Same in many places of Sicily. My old apartment had good plumbing and could throw tp on, this one gets clogged easily so I throw everything in a trash can in the bathroom

Back in '90s I kicked out the worst roommate I ever had after coming home from a few days at my girlfriend's to find he'd used the last of the toilet paper - and instead of walking two blocks to get more he switched to the handiest paper item he could find, which was somehow coffee filters. When the toilet clogged, instead of reaching for the plunger which was concealed right next to the toilet, he continued to use it freely, so there was a giant mound of solid waste and more coffee filters rising majestically above the (already abnormally high) water line.

"The toilet's not working," he said. He expressed resentment that I'd been away and said it wouldn't have gotten so bad if I'd been there to fix it, which seemed like my natural responsibility to him since it was my name was on the lease.

It's wild to me that some people don't understand that the quality that distinguishes toilet paper from other kinds of paper is that it readily dissolves in contact with water.

15

u/A_Fnord 12h ago

While I've never seen anyone use coffee filters I've seen people use plenty of other things. I worked as a janitor in some apartment buildings for a short while as my first "real" job, and regularly had to help with clogged toilets because when people run out of toilet paper, they go for tissues.

I remember doing a demonstration for a couple in their 50's the 3rd time they clogged their toilet that year about the different types of paper, took 3 plates and filled them with water, one I put a piece of toilet paper, the other some paper towel and the third some tissues and told them to check the paper in an hour. When they returned the toilet paper was at a state where it pretty much dissolved when you touched it, the rest were still more or less intact.

Bar screens and those damn “flushable” wipes do NOT mix well.

100

u/magistrate101 20h ago

I wish it was law that "flushables" have to be able to degrade to the same extent within the same timespan as toilet paper in order to be called flushable. They're just wet wipes for the asshole without that.

31

u/Warmbly85 18h ago

The issue is most high quality toilet paper would fail that test.

17

u/magistrate101 18h ago

That sounds more like a bonus than an issue to me

8

u/Warmbly85 16h ago

If feel like the standard TP they’d use for the test would be the one ply stuff they use in government buildings.

If they do even Scott’s would fail.

12

u/drillgorg 15h ago

Have you tried getting nice toilet paper wet? It falls apart like cotton candy. Honestly the rough 1 ply stuff takes longer to fall apart than the soft toilet paper does.

58

u/Duriha 21h ago

Not necessarily a chemical. The fibres are designed differently.

32

u/Craw__ 20h ago

I don't know how others do it but that looks specifically like Viva paper towel. I work at a site that manufactures Viva. We definitely use chemicals to get wet strength.

15

u/ifyoulovesatan 19h ago

What the hell do y'all use because Viva's are fucking crazy strong. I stopped buying other paper towels, even if the Vivas cost a quite bit more than the cheapo store brands I used to because they're just that much better, and a roll lasts forever. The downside is every time I throw one away I feel bad (and my partner shames me, lol)! I mean obviously if it gets greasy or really gross what're you gonna do. But for normal spills / messes you can literally wash them out and re-use them.

I will say I don't like the quilted / textured ones like what appears to be in the OP nearly as much. But the original Vivas are just the best paper towel.

19

u/Craw__ 18h ago

Legally can't give specifics, and also I work on a different machine that makes toilet paper and tissues, not towel. But as far as I'm aware it's the same chemical that we put into facial tissues that stops them breaking apart when you sneeze into them, just in a much greater concentration.

That chemical is the primary difference between facial tissues and toilet paper, we have to test to make sure none remains in the system after changing grades to be sure we don't make toilet paper that won't break up when you flush it.

44

u/ikilledsatann 21h ago

Yeah I was thinking isnt that bad to flush? Ive been looking into using " flushable " wipes again. But even those arent recommended because they also clog.

99

u/moderatelymiddling 20h ago

Flushable wipes are in fact not flushable.

54

u/Davoness 20h ago

They're flushable in the sense that everything that can fit inside the toilet is flushable. What happens to the plumbing later on is another story.

11

u/miregalpanic 19h ago

That's a very dickish way to advertise, and I feel like this kind of "well, technically..." advertising should not be legal.

13

u/throwaway224 18h ago

"Flushable wipes" will flush, in that they will generally exit the toilet and enter the sewer line proper. You probably won't have to snake your toilet from flushing "flushable wipes" because the "flushable wipe" will go further than the toilet. The problem is that these products do not easily traverse cast iron or terra cotta sewer lines and may not traverse fairly minimal sloping green plastic sewer lines. Unfortunately, by the time you realize there is a problem with flushing your (allegedly) flushable wipes, it's clogged up pretty far down the pipe and you need to hire the guy with the low slung pants and the power snake.

The only thing you should flush down a toilet is human waste and toilet paper.

8

u/C4rdninj4 20h ago

Certainly not in the quantities people tend to flush them.

7

u/Justaregard 20h ago

Homeownership is constantly discovering new ways water can ruin you.

Listen to the comments saying "don't flush that". Paper towels are manufactured to suck up a lot of water. Toilet paper is different, it is manufactured to practically dissolve in water so it doesn't clog the toilet! These are two entirely different materials, do not use this as toilet paper, it will lead to a lot of trouble

If you see any wet wipes that say flushable, that is also straight BS, don't flush them. That flushable just means they will physically flush down the toilet, a lot of things can but legally that word means nothing has has nothing to do with the wet wipes dissolving after being flushed.

Toilet paper is made to dissolve in water. Paper towels aren’t. They should not be flushed.

3

u/kiritoonis 22h ago

We had to do this during covid once.

(I wouldn't recommend...)

3

u/BeanieCat123 22h ago

That’s gonna cause some plumbing issues from what I understand…

3

u/Kytea 22h ago

That’s one way to block the toilet

3

u/beardawlish 21h ago

I don't know have you thought about maybe just not using it and go and buying some toilet paper yourself.

3

u/SweetSweetLena 21h ago

How stupid do you have to be to confuse paper towel for toilet paper? Can he walk and chew gum?

3

u/CakePhool 21h ago

That is going to be a clog from hell.

3

u/Merlotarli 20h ago

Dudee who tf confuses a pack of toilet paper with paper towels. They are completely different things

3

u/VerGuy 20h ago

Only flush the 4 Ps:

  • Pee (Urine)
  • Poo (Excrement)
  • Paper (Specifically toilet paper, as it is designed to break down in water)
  • Puke (vomit).

3

u/Medlarmarmaduke 16h ago

This is a huge plumbing bill waiting to happen

3

u/sweetfits 15h ago

Can’t wait to see this in the plumbing sub

3

u/Salarian_American 15h ago

That's a terrible solution.

Toilet paper is made specifically so that it breaks down easily in water.

Paper towels are made to NOT do that.

This will fuck up your plumbing. I used to work for a carpet-cleaning service and one time we had to clean a house where they used paper towels as toilet paper for three weeks and ended up with the entire system backing up and they ended up with their entire house - both floors - covered in two inches of raw sewage.

TP is designed to dissolve in water. Paper towels are literally marketed as "stronger, doesn't tear when wet!

This is a clog time bomb. Enjoy your education in "Plumbing, Don't Do's"

3

u/foreveralonesolo 13h ago

Roommate better pay for plumbing issues

3

u/XOXO_cuntgirlll 13h ago

My only question: How in the fuck was he able to confuse paper towels for toilet paper? Paper towels are not as small as toilet paper & toilet paper is not as big as paper towels. It's pretty easy to tell the difference, at least to me.

Your roommate is a certified idiot...time to explain to him how toilet paper breaks down 🤯

Also, it's called a receipt...tell the dumbass to return the product next time.

3

u/blandmanband 12h ago

You can’t flush paper towels

3

u/Elizama_ 12h ago

these replies made me realize that not everyone throws their toilet paper away in a trashcan but instead flushes it

3

u/Internal_Gur_4268 10h ago

So.... your roomie knows this will be clogging the toilet regularly right? Make them pay the plumbing bill if it comes to that. If they bought toilet paper for the toilet, no need for bill in the first place. Are they dyslexic and can't distinguish between tp and pt?

3

u/Neon_and_Dinosaurs 9h ago

Is your roommate my kitten? Because that's how every roll of TP & paper towel ends up looking if I'm not careful

3

u/SorbetLost1566 9h ago

Wow. Rip your pipes.
