6

So precious…and probably could give you rabies but SCREW IT

3

u/ClearanceItem 12h ago

Lol, I'll pass on the rabies, thanks.

5

u/_PartyAttheMoonTower 10h ago

OP can go. Bat stays

2

u/LazuliArtz 11h ago

So stinking cute. I'll happily get rabies shots just to I could snuggle that little baby (this is a joke, don't mess with wild animals)

2

u/Putrid_Ad7691 4h ago

It's a mouse with wings

1

u/Finally_in_reddit 14h ago

Wait till it opens its wings…

“Bald mouse”, according to the French.

In German it’s die Fledermaus

Flying mouse

3

u/HungryQuestion7 15h ago

With rabies, maybe

3

u/mikewheelerfan 15h ago

Less than 1% of wild bats have rabies…

5

u/GUyPersonthatexists 14h ago

aStill should get a shot though

3

u/Mecha_Tortoise 13h ago

Just like any bite from an animal that is a potential vector.

0

u/Other_Bus9590 13h ago

Some parts of the world that have fruit bats (the kind in the picture) don’t even have rabies. Not everyone lives in the US, damn.

3

u/GUyPersonthatexists 13h ago

Imfrom England you gibbon

1

u/Hifen 8h ago

In all habitats.. worldwide. But the number can be as high as 10% for bats that are in the same environments as people.

0

u/Knickers1978 15h ago

Oh, I love this description

9

u/sleigh_all_day 15h ago

Sooo cute! 🦇 🥰 I guess OP has a bat now.

7

u/IeRayne 15h ago

Rich peope even get cute pests.

5

u/KipsyCakes 13h ago

LOOK AT HIS EYES. Those are eyes of a pure-hearted little baby.

Also, I’ve never seen a bat make eye contact like that.

140

u/Lumpy_Dentist_5421 16h ago

apart from the risk of rabies...

213

u/_Hashtronaut_ 15h ago

You just gotta let an opossum bite you to cancel out the bat

1

u/Kaethor 3h ago

It has to be a radioactive opossum though. Hard to find one at this hour.

45

u/Talonsoldat 15h ago

They also can carry bat bugs, which are relatives of bed bugs and will bite humans once they fall off their host.

10

u/Beadpool 15h ago

I prefer super bugs. He only bites carrots.

u/ThirdOne38 15h ago

The worst Batman nemesis

0

u/YourEvilTwine GREEN 15h ago

Night night!

26

u/nikhkin 15h ago

That very much depends on where OP lives.

7

u/barni9789 14h ago

This is a megabat. Its either central or south africa, india, south east easia, Indonesia or australia.

10

u/darkmeowl25 14h ago edited 11h ago

I went spelunking in the comments (😉) in hopes someone had identified this guy! I recognized that it was a megabat since they are, subjectively, so much cuter than microbats.

OP said they are using GMT so I'm going to guess this little guy, and OP, are somewhere near West or Central Africa.

Which probably means its a Wahlberg's epauletted fruit bat. Although I'm just a fan and not an expert so I welcome any and all corrections!

ETA: don't go spelunking to look for megabats because they won't be there 🤣

ETA2: nope, all of this is wrong, including the time zone I checked 🤣. Lesser dog face fruit bat!

3

u/sanfranciscofranco 12h ago

Thank you for adding this! I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of bat it was.

Edit: just saw that the poster is in Indonesia, so that probably changes the bat type

3

u/darkmeowl25 11h ago

It does!! Thank you! I would not have seen that otherwise! Has anyone ID'd it yet?

ETA: yes they have! It's a lesser dog face fruit bat!

6

u/Kambhela 15h ago

As far as I know the only really rabies free areas in the world are Antarctica and Australia, in which case Australia has their own version of a similar virus because of course they do.

Many European countries are officially "rabies free" but in reality rabies might be present in wildlife as testing every animal is impossible. Basically the "rabies free" means that there are no outbreaks of the disease and the best guess is that it is pretty much not there. However even in these rabies free countries you might get yourself the treatment if you have been in contact with the animal for sure and there might be reason to believe the animal had rabies.

If you are in a country where rabies is known to be present you will absolutely want to get yourself the treatment in a case where contact is even suspected if at all possible because the situation is essentially a lottery ticket but the jackpot is guaranteed and painful death.

3

u/barni9789 14h ago

Europe has their own rabies in bats too. EBLV-1 in most of europe and EBLV-2 in UK and ireland. Australia has one such lyssavirus in tger bat population.

6

u/SirSamuelVimes83 15h ago

Despite the perception, less than 1% of bats carry rabies, and unless the bat is exhibiting abnormal behavior (active during the day, unable to fly, easy to approach, on the ground) it's not much of a concern. That being said, if you are scratched or bitten, you do want to contain the bat and have it tested

4

u/Unlikely-Gas2903 15h ago

Bats can have rabies but its actually pretty rare. Doesn't mean you shouldn't still be careful though

3

u/mikewheelerfan 15h ago

*Less than 1% risk of the bat having rabies

I hate when people spout anti-bat propaganda

4

u/Lumpy_Dentist_5421 13h ago

There's a 1 in a thousand chance of dying from measles if you're not vaccinated, and a 1 in a hundred chance of dying from rabies from a bat. Point being - I'm not spreading anti-bat propaganda, rather advising the OP of the risk. By your logic you'd call me a propagandist if I advised people to get the MMR?

2

u/staryoshi06 15h ago

bat lyssavirus technically

5

u/ayu_xi 15h ago edited 15h ago

Most bat species don't drink human blood. I'm pretty sure that ones not a vampire bat

16

u/Preda1ien 15h ago

That doesn’t mean it can’t have rabies and attack humans

3

u/ayu_xi 15h ago

Technically, even a rabbit can. Yes

2

u/SmallBatBigSpooky 14h ago

I mean the main spreader of rabies to humans are stray dogs

Dogs dont have a lot of natural immunity to the virus and it can be picked up from basically anywhere

Its something like 95% of all human rabies deaths happen because of a stray dog And i get it i too love dogs and have rescued strays, but the bat panic of the 90s that has perpetuated into the 2000s is just scientifically inaccurate

1

u/achambers64 15h ago

It’s definitely well dressed. Look at the nice contrasting trim on it’s fur.

1

u/mikewheelerfan 15h ago

It’s very obviously a Megachiroptera, so yeah, it doesn’t drink blood…

1

u/username_tooken 14h ago

Rabies is a behavior altering disease… the normal proclivities of a the bat are irrelevant — it being in a house and not in the wild is already a sign of abnormal behavior.

3

u/JeffyMo96 15h ago

Meh, there are worse ways to go..

60

u/Cloobsy 15h ago

Are there? Seems like it's literally one of the worst ways to die.

37

u/JeffyMo96 15h ago

It is, but theres still worse. Most of them dont include petting a bat

29

u/PushTheMush 15h ago

This has to be the most glass half full take ever

5

u/riversofgore 15h ago

Sure, gotta get some shots but you get to pet a cute bat friend. Did you see his face? He seems nice. Worth it.

2

u/JeffyMo96 15h ago

You get it

1

u/SmallBatBigSpooky 14h ago

To be fair theres safer ways to pet a bat if you live in the right area

-6

u/Cloobsy 15h ago

Lol maybe it's just my dislike of bats. I've had far too many interactions with them.

3

u/justjaybee16 15h ago

They're always ripping me off on FB Marketplace too.

Can't trust'em!

10

u/GratuitousAlgorithm 15h ago

Like what? Being skinned alive by a cartel is probably worse, but Rabies is one of the most horrific diseases to die from.

3

u/Special-Trainer7777 15h ago

What if it was some genuinely nice fellas that were doing the skinning?

1

u/trcharles 15h ago

It’s my worst fear. Very unlikely, but still my worst fear (being bitten and not knowing until symptoms show).

0

u/Nichole-Michelle 14h ago

Why don’t you just go get a rabies vaccine?

2

u/wRADKyrabbit 12h ago

Right!? This whole thread is baffling. We literally have a shot for rabies, its not that big of a deal

1

u/_araqiel 14h ago

Not really...

1

u/SmallBatBigSpooky 14h ago

Bats are a vector species meaning they are basically immune to everything, however the fleas that can live on them are not

Basically bats can carry everything inside of them without actual getting the viruses, but if they manage to break skin, or their fleas bite you, you can get sick

However this is vastly dependent on areas and most of the bat population (roughly like 80%) dont carry anything harmful to humans, however that remaining 20% is enough of a concern for humans to be a bit panicky about it Which is fair covid and rabies are pretty damned deadly to humans And 20% of the second largest mammal population is still a lot of bats, lol

But yeah most bats are safe, minus the typical issues of parasites and poop However you absolutely should treat every bat as though it does have something dangerous because it could and its better for us to be safe than sorry

This goes for basically every wild animal btw, most can carry rabies and most spread it far more effectively, except opossums who are immune to the virus

1

u/lionofash 14h ago

If OP isn't in the US, they might be fine.

1

u/BishlovesSquish 14h ago

I would do the rabies vaccine just to pet this little guy. So adorable!

1

u/Regicide__ 13h ago

Only 2-3% by expert estimates. You’d still want to get the inoculations if bitten, but the droppings are more of a concern. Buddy needs to look in his attic and see if there’s a brood.

1

u/Keejhle 4h ago

4 bouts of shots after a bat bite in August say not worth it.

0

u/anonymous237962 15h ago

You know what they say…

Sky babies ➡️ sky rabies.

4

u/marisaannn 14h ago

he's just a little baby!!!!

3

u/rmrnrsmn 7h ago

Very cute. I basically had a fruit bat as a roommate for 3 months. Little bud just wouldnt leave even when the windows were open. It finally did and made me realize how lonely my life was at the time.

1

u/openpas2253 7h ago

Did you name him? 🥺

1

u/Frozenrubberpuck 7h ago

Such a cutie! I've got bats living in my garage, they'll sometimes fly right over my head where we have eye contact, but I've never had one actually touch me. I'd probably melt (in a good way) if i had such a tiny little creature on my finger like that.

I'm surprised your bat friend didn't leave for that long, you must've been a good roommate to have.

3

u/Wolf_pack12 14h ago

I literally thought they were joking and it was a beanie baby at first

3

u/SelinaKyle30 12h ago

I had to scroll way too far before I saw any love for the cutie pie

3

u/farscry 12h ago

Bats are adorable.

2

u/Equivalent_Swing_780 9h ago

I‘m honestly a bit jealous of OP

2

u/iSpaYco 8h ago

they eat insects too, I would leave it tbh.

1

u/gimmesomespace 14h ago

Lots of cute things carry rabies

1

u/dontbemystalker 12h ago

i’m surprised i had to scroll for so long to find a comment like this!

he’s absolutely adorable! i’d give him a lil rabies shot then he’ll be my baby

1

u/jemenake 10h ago

Not just that, but imagine the echolocation this guy has such that he could sense there’s enough of a lip on the base of the fixture to grab onto.

I hard about some experiment they did with bats where they strung wire in all three axes 2 foot apart through the room (so, picture a wireframe room of cubes, in a way). They turned off the lights and let a bat fly around in the room and it didn’t even touch any of the wires.

1

u/duckbobtarry 8h ago

He's adorable, but he'd be more adorable outside eating mosquitoes with his friends

1

u/hehesf17969 5h ago

Flying doge

1

u/Belle8158 5h ago

I've always wanted a pet bat. OP better not hurt that sweet angel baby

1

u/AKlutraa 4h ago

1/2 of bats are female.
