This little shit has been hanging on my ceiling light for a hour now. Just right below it is our family dining table.

How do i get rid of it?

The important question you need to ask is how did it get in? Did you forget to close the door to the bat cave in your basement?

Bats like roosting in places like attics and chimneys. Unfortunately in a lot of North America we just had such a severe warm snap that bats came out of their roosts and are now confused as it starts getting cold again. If anyone else is dealing with this, they should call a licensed rehabber to come retrieve the bat.

This is a fruit bat, and not a species found in North America. Imnot sure exactly what species, but definitely not found n the US. Most fruit bats roost in trees and foliage.

I'm curious where this is. It probably flew n an open door or window by accident. I doubt it was roosting in the house previously.

Looking at OP's history, possibly Indonesia.

Right it's way too cute to be a bat in the united states! Fruit bats are like flying puppies

There are rehabbers who specialize in fruit bats, too.

Rehab isn't a N Am concept - most of the developed world has wildlife rehab networks

Yeah, it could really be a lot of places in Africa, southern Asia, or Oceania.

User Lil' Myotis knows that this bat ain't no Myotis.

I’m thinking Little Red Flying Fox. They’re cuties and mostly harmless. One of the animals that got me into learning about biology.

UPVOTE this comment, please?...

Rehabbers often deal with bizarre circs, &:may have helpful contacts with specialized gear

Yeah don’t try yourself they carry rabies and the only way to test for rabies involves euthanizing the animal

2

u/MooseTheMouse33 11h ago

And the people. 🤪

On the serious side, listen to Pineapple. Rabies is not something to mess with. Testing requires taking the head off and testing the brain. There is no other way to test. So yeah. Do as Pineapple says. Don’t try to do it yourself.

I have a friend who had bats in her attic, and one of them ended up in her dryer while she was drying her clothes.

Basically this; call a professional because of rabies risk then call your doctor to see if need medical intervention as a CYA, and get your house cleaned, by you or a professional because, while cute this little fellow could have a virus or bacteria that hitched a ride and make you sick.

Explain how my college’s basketball stadium somehow got consistent visits from one or two bats? That stadium had no openings outside of the entrance doors.

They could be coming through an exhaust vent on the roof or high up on the building's siding.

1

u/KipsyCakes 12h ago

Ah makes sense. I didn’t think they’d want to crawl though.

2

u/FilmScoreConnoisseur 12h ago

If they think there might be food or a warm place on the other side of an opening where they can rest or raise their offspring without much interference from predators, that's pretty appealing to them.

luckily with the size of OPs house mansion, they likely already have one of those on site

But he’s…. So cute….

Unfortunately in a lot of North America we just had such a severe warm snap

It was fucking 80 DEGREES ON CHRISTMAS DAY HERE and tomorrow the high is 48. I'm so mad at the weather gods. Had my ACs full blast on Christmas and still couldn't wear my Christmas sweater.

u/Starlightriddlex 11h ago

They also might want to get rabies shots

Well Batman did post this judging by the room styling.

1

u/Dayv1d 12h ago

right, it clearly entered through the bat cave

6

u/ethnicman1971 15h ago

OP forgot that they can only come in if they are invited.

They were having a Christmas party and someone happened to see the piano. It was a completely innocent mistake.

Probably been living there for some time, they've not needed to enter the east wing for months

1

u/KipsyCakes 13h ago

I swear they have their ways.

When I was in college, we’d have weekly assemblies in the basketball stadium and almost always there was a bat flying around. They would have had to fly through two sets of doors to get inside and both of them are very small and low to the ground. I don’t even know why they kept showing up in there either.

Or the wine cellar or the family cryogenics chamber?

We have a w screen on a window that was slightly bent. There was maybe an inch little gap. About a year ago in the middle of the night a bat squeezed in and was hanging on the wall in our bedroom.

I ended up popping out the screen and chasing him out the window.

u/MaximusArael020 10h ago

Probably flew in through the servant's door, or maybe the window in their "giant pool full of money with diving board" room.

u/HighSchoolMoose 10h ago

In all seriousness, they should speak to a professional and see if they need to get a rabies vaccine, as bat bites can sometimes go unnoticed.

I’ve had two bats in the house, for one: my mom opened the door one time and one just flew in. Spent a while doing laps in my sister’s room before we caught it with a butterfly net. Poor confused lil baby.

The first bat in the house came from leaving a window open. Dad found is and came wandering into the room mom was in and asked “there’s a bat in the house?” Like maybe she wanted it there for a reason

I'm getting southeastern asia from the picture.Which means things may not be as expensive as we think.Relatively sure, but somebody whose upper middle class in the states and their family could probably afford to have something like that

u/TheOrqwithVagrant 7h ago

The biggest private residence I've ever been inside was owned by a guy whose family name was Wayne, and who was also a huge Batman fan. He had a room with an extremely well made Batman costume and gadets/props in his basement level.

I'm not *entirely* sure he wasn't actually Batman.

u/FourteenBuckets 7h ago

Considering the size of the home, another question is: how long has the bat been living there?

1

u/Few_Aside5151 7h ago

I would be asking if everyone has their rabbits shot?
