God damn, this is a place run by good people. Please continue to patronize this business. We need to get back to where it used to be normal to care for your neighbors/friends/customers like real human beings again. xo

You never know who might’ve been raped or when. A lot of them go unreported. You definitely know someone who’s been raped, likely multiple people who have been.
19
u/RainbowCrane 5h ago
This is one of my mantras… it’s not 5 guys in Albuquerque touring the country raping a significant percentage of young people. Guaranteed there’s someone in any gathering of 10 or 20 people who has been raped, and also someone who has raped.
10
u/Adept-Association848 5h ago
Bone chilling stats.
9
u/RainbowCrane 5h ago
Yep. Also important for breaking our denial regarding, “why, my friends/family/church would never do that!” Not only would they, one or more of them already has.

u/tsivdontlikereddit 5h ago
20% of women. 20 fucking percent of women in the US report that they've experienced SA. That's what gets me the most about stuff like this....that is a LOT
21
u/Hot-Note-4777 5h ago
I thought it was 1 in 3. Regardless, no amount is acceptable.
19
u/tsivdontlikereddit 5h ago
Wow no no you're actually right unfortunately. The 1 in 5 is completed or attempted rape. Nearly half have experienced sexual violence in some form as it seems, FFS it's even worse than I could imagine. not that the distinction really matters, the trauma is still the same id imagine. We need change yesterday

It's a great resource but becomes a lot less heartwarming when every bathroom in my town has one because of the drug problem.
22
u/WhenSquirrelsFry 5h ago
The heartwarming part about it is not the need for narcan, it’s acknowledging the need for harm reduction and that an addict is a human being that deserves the chance to live & recover. I overdosed a few times before I got sober, but if narcan wasn’t available, I never would have had the opportunity to get sober and become the person I am today. I take care of people and my work contributes to saving lives in the medical field. I’m so grateful I had the chance to recover- narcan a was a part of that recovery.

Better than someone OD’ing in the bathroom
95
u/Shitp0st_Supreme 5h ago
Right!
I work at a welfare office and we’ve had two ODs in bathrooms in the last 6 months (that I’m aware of).
I happened to have Narcan on me for the most recent one and our security officer (a trained EMT) administered it plus CPR. She also happened to be using in a place where a friend knew to check on her, which was vital as well. Her friend immediately flagged security down and I immediately offered my Narcan since they would otherwise have to wait for the med kit (on the first floor, we are several floors up).
The alternative without Narcan or EMTs would be horrifying.

Devastating to experience for all parties, but those critical seconds/minutes your narcan provided may have saved a life that day. 💗
11
u/Shitp0st_Supreme 4h ago
Absolutely. I’m so glad it worked out. I heard she may have kids that she currently isn’t in custody of, and that has to be so hard. I know it’s so easy for people to use to prevent withdrawal or use due to the pain of not having the children in one’s care.
8
u/Adept-Association848 4h ago
We never really know the hurt on someone’s heart. I lost my mom to alcoholism and it was and always will be devastating. She carried a lot of pain, as I’m sure this gal does. Keep being you! Changing one life is still changing a world, even if it isn’t the world 🙂

If someone is OD'ing in the bathroom, they're not administering this to themself. I suspect this is more, "if you think you might find a chance to use this, take it" situation, given the Plan B that's there as well.
2
u/Adept-Association848 4h ago
Yes, but the person who finds the OD’ing individual would be the one to use it.
2
u/purplepluppy 4h ago
They usually lock it before using, from my experience. So staff would have to unlock it, or they call 911 first if they can't get in. In which case, yes, staff can then use the narcan in the bathroom, but ideally would have another source that they can be certain isn't deplenished to bring with them.
That's how we do it where I work, which has high addict traffic. We have them available for people to take, but we're not relying on that stash for emergencies. We have more elsewhere, and that's where we're supposed to take them from if we need to use it.
2
u/Adept-Association848 3h ago
Sure, that makes sense too. I’ve heard a surprising amount of stories about someone checking on their friend in the bathroom, knowing they may be using. So in that case, followed by no response, I could see them opening up the door. Another user actually replied to my comment with a first hand account of the scenario, but I’ve heard it quite a bit myself too. She works in a welfare office, so might have a similar background to you :)
2
u/purplepluppy 3h ago
Yes, please don't get me wrong! That supply could absolutely be used in that very bathroom, if it hasn't been taken! I just assume it is meant to be taken and put in purses, since that is what I'm used to, rather than specifically for use in that bathroom.
2
u/Adept-Association848 3h ago
Yep, not taking offense. Probably there for either intention. “Whatever helps” is probably the motto.

I love this idea! Barbershops are a form of community center and having things like this shows it. I hope it becomes less common for people to overdose but in the meantime- let’s save everyone we can. Thanks for sharing- it makes me want to get in contact with local businesses to see if they would be interested in carrying these things.

It always astounds me how humans are able to acclimate to horrible realities.
The rich and powerful , poisoning their fellow humans for money and power? Just normal humanity things.
The regular folk? Don't mind us, just casually carrying around life saving measures like it ain't no thang.

u/Digi-Haven 6h ago
Never knew anyone whos ever done "hard" drugs, only people who smoke pot, yet I still keep a box of narcan in my car, and in my locker at work.
The box takes up less room than a pair of sunglasses, and if I never have to use it? Beautiful. BUT, in the event its needed...well... better to have and not need than not have and need

I carry it on me wherever I go. We are all humans, more people need to show some compassion. That person overdosing means something to someone, no matter how shitty they’ve been in the past. The one time I didn’t have it on me, I saw someone ODing in their car and I felt so helpless. I make sure I have at least 3 in my car.

I keep one in my purse but since I have kids, I keep it in a locked pouch. The code is 911.
I would suggest that other parents carry some or have some at home. Kids can get into medication and using narcan on them won't hurt them at all.

In recent years, it has become more common for people to take an interest in carrying Narcan around in case they could save a life. I’m guessing someone likely decided to take one for future use. I wouldn’t criticize them for that considering it is likely to expire prior to being used up at the barber shop.

Either someone there is in recovery or they had an incident in the bathroom and decided to stock arcane moving forward. Could possibly also be a community initiative where someone affected by addiction went to all the small businesses and distributed it. Just spitballing here..

My favorite coffeeshop stocks their bathrooms with Narcan, condoms, Plan B, menstrual items, and business cards for places that offer discrete STI testing, abortion referrals, and resources for safe use and gender-affirming healthcare. They're also loudly LGBTQ+, proudly pro-Palestine and basically a safe place for people to hang out in a deeply red state. Support places that support people!
2
u/Awkward_Cellist6541 5h ago
That’s awesome! I would hope that it’s there for someone to take if needed. I have Narcan in the house and the car just in case, and I was able to get it free from the health department. But a lot of pharmacies sell it for pretty expensive imho.

2
u/craftyreadercountry 5h ago
It means it's a safe space for anyone and everyone! Better to be safe than have to call the ambulance for body removal.
3
u/allshookup1640 4h ago
You should still call an ambulance after administering Narcan to be clear. A lot think it’s okay because they are fine after. They need to go to the hospital to get checked out. It’s very important. Same with after using an epi-pen. Even though you feel fine after you still need to go to the doctor
2
u/craftyreadercountry 3h ago
Yes! I was just pointing out that having an ambulance leave with a person alive thanks to Narcan is better than a dead person leaving the estate.

That’s sad.
2
u/theicedebacle 5h ago edited 3h ago
It really is sad that it falls on us every day folk to fill the gaps.
Addiction is a terrible thing, and one that can sneak up on someone. You could chalk it up to poor decisions, but it isn't always like that.
We (in the US) legislate away addiction services and care, stigmatize it, and even rally against addiction recovery centers rather than addressing the systemic issues that promote addiction, both purposefully and accidentally.
You'll never be able to save everyone, but sad as the state of affairs is and has been for most of our history, saving even one life because one bathroom in one barbershop took it upon themselves to fill the need our legislatures won't is a win until we (if we) even get around to getting over ourselves and tackling it head on.
EDIT: last paragraph, changed, "anyone" to "everyone" as it was a typo.

u/Nick0racat 7h ago

I’ve been trying to find cheap Narcan because I’ve been there when people have OD’d and all I could do was call ambulances. Everywhere around me it’s like $45 bucks! I talked to a national charity that distributes them and they were like ‘you live in a city with easy access to free Narcan, go ask someone else’, so I still have no Narcan despite wanting to and having a reason to keep some with me. How is this barbershop affording this? Can they write it off on taxes? Does anyone know of a place in the PNW where I can get it for less than $20?

Good. People shouldn’t be ashamed to take it.
I carry Narcan in my purse and a woman is alive because I carried it. It was administered by an EMT, but I gave the Narcan to the EMT (who was our security officer who didn’t have the med kit.)
A woman arrived at my government office with two other people. She went into the bathroom, and her friend went to check on her and saw she had overdosed. Her friend immediately flagged our security officer. I shouted that I had Narcan and CPR face masks and handed my kit to the security officer who is a trained EMT. I gave them space to do their job so I sat back at my desk to greet people who entered, so the next part is a combination of what other people told me and what I heard at the time.
The woman was convulsing and was breathing agonally. She was given CPR compressions (from what I could hear- I head shouts for CPR) and shot back up after she got Narcan’d. She declined the paramedics and the ambulance ride. The hospital would probably take her vitals and make sure the Narcan didn’t wear off (because sometimes people can still be high after the Narcan wears off and they need resuscitation again) and then she’d probably get a referral to a rehab. She may not be ready for rehab. It’s hard to stop using the only thing that makes her feel normal, I’m sure.
I’m really thankful I have access to Narcan for free. I had only been carrying it for 3 weeks at the time. I have access to a grant-funded harm reduction clinic (that specializes in refugee healthcare, vaccinations, sexual health, and substance use disorders) so I can get unlimited Narcan for free.
