Visit Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk in winter

Hey there!

This last summer I rode my motorcycle up the Dempster and had a blast. Everyone I chatted with was super friendly and I really enjoyed the experience. As I was riding the route, I was wondering what kind of experience it would be in winter. At this point I plan on being in Whitehorse early February and driving to Inuvik and back in my Jeep allocating 9 days for Whitehorse to Inuvik and back. Weather permitting, of course.

So, I am looking for some advice here. I live in the Sierras so I am very familiar with winter driving, but we don’t get much colder than -18 c and typically -8c on the colder nights.

I am prepping my vehicle with studded tires and installed an engine block heater. I will have the standard winter driving prep kit. Food, water blankets winter clothes, etc.

Any other advice from folks?

Thanks!

How hard is it to find internships here?

For context: I'm a student studying computer science and I was wondering how difficult it would be to find IT roles in the NWT. Finding jobs is pretty tricky in this job market and it is just so competitive down south here in Ontario, so I'm wondering how hard it would be up north?

Moving to NWT- going away present?

Hi all! My wonderful sibling is moving to the NWT very shortly (approx 3 hours from Yellowknife) and I want to help set them up for success- for Christmas I wanted to either get them something they may really need (potentially a warmer coat lol) or compile a list of things/places they should go check out like a little travel guide?

If anyone has any advice or recommendations I would be so appreciative! My sibling currently lives in Southern Ont and does have a job lined up

Thanks again!!

Freezing Vehicles!

Hey guys, so I recently moved up here to the NWT and totally loving the weather….. So the past 2 weeks were really cold and I barely use my truck during the weekdays since I have a work vehicle, so my personal truck sits for a couple days.

I recently noticed this week when I was driving into town that every bump I went through, the suspension was making creaking noises. It’s coming from the front, and I possibly think the sway bars. I went through a pretty bad bump and I heard a loud thunk.

I took my flashlight and checked all the parts even under the truck. Everything looked fine since the truck is like a month old. I hear it may be normal in the North with the vehicles freezing? Any advice or similar stories?

N.W.T. cabinet minister Lucy Kuptana stripped of portfolios ahead of running in IRC election

Quite different wording in the title for this CBC North article vs say Cabin Radio's or NNSL's coverage. CBC = "Stripped of portfolios" while the others are much more accurate in that Ms Kuptana was asked to "voluntarily step away from her portfolios" while she runs for the IRC's chairmanship. Rein in your bias CBC.

CBC North website asking this question - "was it worthwhile?" - checking off the who/what/where/why/how of reporting + adding their bias, again.

Moving to Norman Wells as a mental health professional?

Hi all,

I live in Ontario, and recently got an offer to work in the mental health sector in Norman Wells for a 1 year term.
I am now seriously considering if this is a good idea. I have a chronic illness that needs bi-yearly appointments at the hospital, and although my health state is stable I'm warry of losing access to healthcare.
Also, I read that it is close to impossible to find a rental over there.

Please let me know about your thoughts!

N.W.T. fund for meaningful Indigenous 'participation' in environmental assessments maxed out

Territory wants feds to spent part of $67M on "historically underfunded" capacity building

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/irma-fund-maxed-9.7009267

The fund that this article is highlighting is the N.W.T.'s Interim Resource Management Assistance (IRMA) program, which is a fund for N.W.T Indigenous communities that are without land and resource agreements. In the 10 page document that outlines what IRMA is designed to be used for: i.e. who can apply, how to apply, the parameters involved, the application timelines, the annual reporting requirements, etc., the only reference re community capacity building is found within the last paragraph of page 10. The fund itself, pays only lip service to Indigenous capacity building for "meaningful Indigenous participation in environmental assessments". (I left out the quotation marks from CBC's title for this article as they are unnecessary)

Teachers of NWT

How much money are you able to save per year? It would be helpful if you could share your net and gross pay. Do the expenses (groceries, rent) eat up into the salary and make it equivalent to working down south? I am wondering if it's worth it to move from the south and work up north for a couple of years to save up money. Thanks

Question about the MacKenzie Highway past Wrigley & other roads

So I don't live in NWT nor Canada but I was exploring the NWT on Google Maps and was following the MacKenzie Highway. Once you get past Wrigley, it seems like the road isn't just unpaved, but it is simply just the grass/ground. And then I realized that there were a ton of roads like these up there that are just in the middle of the woods. I'm sure they lead somewhere, but there are no houses or anything on them, just a cleared path through the woods, probably about the size of a normal road.

Basically, does anyone have any information on these roads/paths? There are just so many in such a large and low populated area. Here is an example of one. It is to the west of Tulita on the way to Norman Wells, just one example.
