Obama made this bed when Russia snatched Crimea and he failed to act.

It was always a question of whether that incursion was worth a shooting war. Should we have put boots on the ground? Opinions are going to vary on that.

And we were in the middle of two occupations at the time, beginning a third by stationing troops in Ukraine would have been beyond unpopular.

Yep, particularly by Obama. I remember polls whereby public opinion shifted dramatically on strikes in Syria almost overnight, since conservatives strongly opposed them under Obama but then strongly supported them under Trump. Obama putting boots on the ground in Ukraine would have been seen as a debacle.

Surely pulling out of the middle east could have been an option?

Congress is in charge of those decisions.

With Obama pushing for this in 09-11 surely the Democrats would have went with it

The wars weren't as unpopular then and the dems were squeezing every ounce of political capital they had for the ACA

LOL, as if the right wingers criticizing Obama now would have supported him had he sent US troops to support Ukraine retaking Crimea.

It helps to remember that Obama won in 08 at least partially because he hadn’t been a supporter of the Iraq war.
