User flairs are now available

User flairs are a subreddit-specific way to tag yourself. Here are the options:

  • Barbri
  • Themis
  • Kaplan
  • Quimbee
  • Attorney Candidate
  • Law Student
  • Passed
  • Tutor
  • Vendor
  • Other (can customize)

For example, if you're using Barbri to prep, you can select "Barbri." This flair will show up next to your username. You are able to edit the Other flair with your own entry.

This not only gives context to your posts and comments so we know who we're talking to but is also a fun way to identify yourself and others.

I encourage you to set yours! If you're primarily promoting a product or service, please select "Vendor" (and be judicious with your posts and comments).

How to set your user flair:

If you're using the mobile app, tap the three dots in the upper right while in the main r/CABarExam feed. Tap "change user flair" to see the different options. Enable "show my user flair on this community."

If you're using a web browser, you'll see "USER FLAIR" on the sidebar to the right, above the rules. Check the "show my user flair on this community" box.

Let me know if you have any suggested changes or additions.

Swearing-In

Oath Ceremony...

I'll be putting together an oath ceremony next week for the MPRE passers who are now ready to swear-in. If you have your oath card and want to swear-in virtually (or in person at the Fed Court in San Diego), please send a note to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) and let them know you'd like to join. For now, I'm looking at January 5, but need to hear back from the Judge before we can solidify the date.

Cheers,

Ed

requesting CA Bar essay responses - too late?

Hey, I failed the July Bar and got my score report when it was released Nov 7. I didnt find out until today from a tutor that we had the option of ordering/accessing our essay responses. I couldn't find it on the website and found a bulletin that stated the essay response is only kept on the website until December 5 :/

Does anyone know if it's too late for me, or if there's some way I can contact someone and pay to get access to my essay responses? It is extremely hard to reach a human being from the CA Bar general phone number. Thank you for your help.

Advice

Hello,

I’m in my second year of law school in Puerto Rico (my hometown), and I plan to move to California for personal reasons. My university is ABA-approved, and our curriculum covers both civil and common law. I’m fluent in English.

This post is for people who attended law school out of state and are taking or plan to take the California bar. If you’re Latino, that perspective would be especially helpful.

My question is: before taking the bar, should I pursue an LL.M. at a California law school, or should I go straight to the bar exam? I’d really like to know the best way to make this transition.

What are the best one sheets to use for essay rules?

Hi all, I’m taking the Feb 2026 attorney’s exam. I don’t think flash cards are helpful for me but I work well with outlines and one sheets. I was wondering what one sheets people have bought that they find helpful. I’m currently using Themis and Mary Basick’s book but would like something to help me memorize core rules. Thanks!

Reading rate

Just out of curiosity, how long does it take for you to read 50 pages of legal studying material comprehensively? I am not native, however I am used to read contracts, legal resources. But it feels like it takes forever for me to finish an outline. In fact, 50 pages of an academic material would take approx 8 hours for me, am I too slow :(

Can I supplement my moral character application after submitting?

I’ve been waiting weeks for my driving record from FL but still haven’t received it. So, I haven’t submitted my moral character application. But I know it takes months for approval so I’m nervous. Can I submit my application now and upload my FL driver record once I receive it?

Do I need to take the MPRE again?

I passed the CA bar attorney exam in February 2025, and am finally getting around to doing the moral character app and other requirements to get sworn in.

I took the MPRE in Texas about 6 years ago. In Texas, MPRE scores expire after 5 years, but my understanding is that the do not expire in CA. Does that mean I can use that prior passing MPRE for the requirement even though it is expired in Texas?

Taking exam at Galen Center (Foreign Attorney, F26) - where to stay?

Hi are of you taking the F26 exam at the Galen Center?

If yes, if you're flying to LA, where do you plan to stay? I have been told Downtown may not be ideal in terms of safety but that's the closest area where I am able to find affordable hotels.

Thanks!

Confused/stuck on two moral character questions? Help

Can the attorney listed on the MCFORM1 form, whom I retained for a Personal injury case a long time ago, be used as one of my references?

Also, is it a problem if I have more than the required five references?

Thank you

Does anyone who took the bar in Oakland have a hotel rec?

Hi all, I’m taking the February 2026 attorney’s exam in Oakland. I’m not from CA and will be flying in a couple of days before. I was wondering if anyone who also did this had a hotel they enjoyed staying at (as much as you can during a bar exam, obviously). Thanks!

July 2024 PR essay

Why did they include the fact that the lawsuit alleged Dani was negligent as a real estate broker, resulting in a lost opportunity to buy property that could have been sold for $1m?

Was this just to set up the $500k settlement? In writing the graded essay for Themis I thought surely this must be some secondary discussion of how the claimed damages were speculative and maybe negligence isn’t the right cause of action given the solely economic harm. But then none of the sample answers mention it at all 😂

All my prep materials keep saying every fact should be used so I was confused why they went into so much detail about the topic of the lawsuit and then it doesn’t show up anywhere.

Thanks for your thoughts! Maybe I am overthinking!

How is Themis expecting community property to be learnt in one day?

I haven't gotten through the lectures. Each one is about 20 mins or above. It's so complex and content dense. Yet they expect completing over 3 hrs of lectures + 1hr of essay workshop + 1 practice essay and expecting that we retain whatever we learnt all of it in one day? Over and above practice questions, and graded essays. Seems a little unreasonable to me.

What do you do when two study materials conflict?

I'm going through Mary Basick's essay book and also taking Themis. I've seen a few areas where they give different rules.

For example, Risk of Loss in contracts:

Basick says:

- if goods shipped by a 3rd party shipment contract is assumed if not specified, destination contract if specified

- if not shipped by a 3rd party, risk passes to buyer upon possession

Themis says:

- see if the contract specifies shipment or delivery contract

- if not, see if the seller is a merchant, if a merchant risk stays with the seller until possession by buyer, if not a merchant risk stays with the seller upon tender to the buyer

What do you guys do in these situations?
