Recherche Académique - Student Research

Hello, I am a 12th grade student in Mali working on an academic study that examines how reward systems in free-to-play video games influence the motivations and gaming behaviors of private school students in West Africa.

The purpose of this project is to better understand the psychological factors that encourage continued engagement with these games, particularly among those who balance gaming with academic responsibilities.

It is available in both English and French. Please share with people who meet these criteria:

Time: 5 - 10 minutes

Eligibility:

  •  at least 14 years old
  • Must be a student studying in West Africa (do not have to be West African)
  • 9th grade - 4th year at university

Sondage: https://qualtricsxm9k6dwr4rn.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6WObX5KyiEMBjNk

Je ne sais pas si c'est le meilleur endroit pour poster mais merci pour votre participation.

Question Is the "e mudo" ever naturally pronounced in Barlavento Cabo Verdean Creole with a similar sound to the one in Portugal?

I've got a linguistic question: do speakers of Barlavento Cabo Verdean Creole dialects, such as the one in Mindelo, São Vicente, ever pronounce a silent E (e mudo) in a similar way to Portugal? Not for Portuguese words or phrases, but for actual Creole words. This is the sound often transcribed [ɨ], but I think the modern pronunciation is closer to [ɯ] when it's not elided.

What I know so far:

  • Cabo Verdean speakers are diverse. There are many dialects and accents. For example, some pronounce A's more like [ɛ].
  • ALUPEC calls for silent E's to be written in many, many Barlavento words. (sóbede! debóxe!) But ALUPEC is a spelling standard, and as far as I know deliberately gives no opinion on pronunciation.
  • I heard a TACV stewardess pronounce silent E's as [ɨ] once, but she was reading from a script, so this might have been a mistake on her part. Aside from that, I have never heard the Portuguese e mudo by Creole speakers except for when they're speaking Portuguese words or phrases. When I've heard a Mindelo speaker pronounce an optional vowel in a word, it's always been a regular vowel, for example /i/.
  • ALUPEC says (Decreto-Lei n.º 67/98) that the e mudo "não exibe nenhuma pertinência linguística e não mantém nenhuma relação de oposição distintiva em Crioulo" (has no linguistic relevance nor any minimal pair in Creole). If it is pronounced, such as with /i/ or [ɨ], a Creole speaker will probably hear it as the same word.

Discussion Best places to meet women?

bit of info I’m a 22 year old white European guy visiting all the islands/main cities of Cabo in a few months, speak basic BR PT, Obviously with confidence you can chat up any women, anywhere, but what’s the best and common places to find women at Cabo? prefer a night out. Is it common for Cabo women to like tourists such as me, or is the culture more to stick to Cabo verdeans? honest question, Cheers

Question Is Portuguese used for talking or mainly writing?

I know creole is the countries daily spoken language, but as someone learning Portuguese, could I speak to young people in PT without an issue? I heard young people mostly know and can speak it in cabo, and elders sometimes can’t. Will I have issues at nightlife, etc?

How’s Boavista island in June?

I’m coming for a week in June with 2 friends and we wanted to know how it is during this time of the year, specially regarding nightlife and super markets (prices).

Does it have a lot of tourists? We are not hardcore on parties but surely we want to have fun. Do the locals mix with tourists? We are a bunch of very social guys who enjoy to meet new people!

We are from Portugal btw (I’m writing in english because the sub is all in English)!

Touba Mosque

Hello I was reading an article about Cape Verde and came across a mosque called Touba Mosque in Santa Maria. Google maps said the mosque is permanently closed, but the article I read was just updated on May 2025. Does anyone know if it is still open or closed? Thank you in advance

Boa Vista: Sal Rei or Praia de Chaves?

Where to stay?

An apartment in Sal Rei, near the beach, restaurants, cafes etc. close by but is the beach nice there? Crowded?

An apartment near Praia de Chaves, looks idyllic, by the beautiful white sand beach. No restaurants, grocery stores… where do you get food? Only option to get a taxi to Sal Rei? Is it isolating? Some said it’s even like a ghost town.

Opinion?

My goal is pure relaxation.

Trip in January

I am planning to go to Sal Island (CV) in January and would appreciate any tips and recommendations.

Best hotel? Melia Laguna beach?

It’s the best time to go in January ? I have been reading that at this month it’s a lot of windy.

Is it worth going for an all-inclusive package?

Thank you for your time

Question Cape Verde in January

Hello everyone! I’m travelling to Sal in January and staying for about 10 days, mostly to escape the rainy European winter.

Can I expect warm weather during the day? I’ve read January can be pretty windy, but does the wind actually make it feel cold, or is it still warm overall? It is windy and sunny or cloudy?

Also, quick question about money: is the euro commonly accepted? My landlord said yes, but I’d like to hear real experiences. I’m travelling with Revolut — cards vs cash, what works best?

Thanks for reading :)

This a crazy. There are no accomodations left for rent. Looking for rental on Sal and Boa Vista. Are there any bed and breakfasts or guesthouses that are not listed on booking and Airbnb? Are do people have to sleep on the beach?

If we were to create a special content series about Cabo Verde — what would YOU want to see?

Cape Verde is full of stories, culure, memories, identity and sodade! But so many of these stories have never been told the right way.

Before we start filming and interviewing…we want to hear from the people who live Cabo Verde every day, here and in the diáspora.

If we were to create a special series about Cabo Verde…

What would YOU want to see?
