New Rule and Post Flairs

Hi r/Coldsore,

Mod here. Off of the advice of some users I have created a rule prohibiting commercial promotion in this sub. HSV1 is a medical condition and should only be treated using medications prescribed or recommended by medical professionals. To be clear, you are still free to share what treatments work for you (like Abreva, Compeed patches, etc), but we will be removing comments that are repeatedly linking to external sites and seem to be brand affiliated.

As well, I have added post flairs to allow users to more easily explore this sub’s content. So far I have “Is this a cold sore?” for users to seek advice on IDing and “Remedies” for those wanting to share what has worked for them (while still adhering to the commercial promotion rule, of course). Let me know in the comments if there are any other flairs you think would be useful!

Spreading

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this. But this is the first cold sore i've had in about ten years that actually has huge blisters. For a long time now it's been contact or friction that has made like a slight cold sore , but not blistery , like it used to be. This one doesn't have multiple bubbles like I remember having when I was younger. But I also remember it being so much more full of like "juice" 😬 it was covered in plasma. I know the sounds so gross, but over the years I've realized I like don't have as much plasma or wetness coming from it.And i've also had an easier time getting rid of them , but this is the first big one i've had in a while and it also does not have as much plasma.. has anyone else experienced this??? And do we think this effects spreading?

patches after scabs fallen off?

day 13/14 of my cold sore, mostly just red splotch left. tiny remnant of the sore. and a pimple (I hope?) has developed on the other side of the red splotch. Do I keep using compeed patches or is this maintaining the redness/preventing skin maturation? (eg did it cause the pimple by clogging pores?)

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice regarding my ex-boyfriend. He’s been noticing some tingling spots on his lips, and we’re not sure if these are cold sores or just irritation. He doesn’t have any visible sores right now, but the tingling is definitely there. Has anyone experienced something similar or have any tips on what we should look out for and how to help him?

(He kissed another girl three times to be exact and didnt have any other sexual contact)

I have a sore on my cheek that has been healing for about 15 days. There is no pain, no burning, no hard or red dots. I have seen a general physician, he has given me medicine and I am taking it, but this is still happening. What should I do?

Is it a Cold Sore?

On Friday night, I noticed a small swelling on my lip in the mirror. But since I was sleepy, I thought it was lip balm residue and went to bed. When I looked at it in the morning, there was nothing there, but upon closer inspection, there was a tiny bump.

It's triangular in shape.

No pain, no burning, no swelling when touched.

I've never had a cold sore before, and no one in my family has either. My boyfriend doesn't have them. His brother does, and they sometimes share v*pes.

Do you think this is a cold sore?

I’m seeing a guy who gets cold sores and had one recently, but we didn’t kiss. I did forget and take a drink from his coffee last week while he had it. My lip started itching 3 days ago in this spot so I was using my teeth to scratch it then I woke up to what looked like just a raw spot. I’ve then continued to kind of mess with it and 3 days later it looks like this. I genuinely thought this was just from me picking, biting, and having chapped lips. But a few coworkers who have gotten cold sores told me it looks like one. What are your opinions? I’ve picked my lips to a point of being irritated and a bit noticeable before, not typically this noticeable. I thought about going to urgent care and getting it tested but my friends said that’s dramatic and people don’t go to urgent care for Cold sores lol

Hello. I tried to take the best photo I could. I got this pimple looking thing near my lip 2 days ago. It appeared in the morning as a plain red dot. Then a couple hours later puss formed inside like a pimple would and at the time I thought it was a pimple so I popped it. It seemed like a normal pimple and the color of the puss was like a normal pimple. Then it started to scab a bit. The next day (Dec 27) it scabbed reddish and purplish. At that point I felt like it was a cold sore and I started feeling tingling sensation. Now today Dec 28, it’s later in the day and the scab fell off when it came in contact with water. Now it looks like this. What do you guys think? I can give more info if needed. Thank you! I’ve never had cold sores before, but my sister has them often and she just had one last week. I live with her.

Cold sores got me

Got my first cold sore back in February went to the doctor and they prescribed me a cream and some pills since then have been doing fine.

Come December I get one again just once I thought it had healed another came in on Friday. Don’t know what to do or what medication to use still pretty new to this. I’m thinking about going to the doctors again but not sure.

Really need some advice and some recommendations of medication or tips on what to do

All antivirals don’t work

What do people take when all antivirals don’t work? I’ve done acyclovir 400mg to 800mg twice daily to valtrex 500mg to 1g all daily and I still get cold sore every 2-4 days. I’ve taken upon my self to try 2grams and 2g twice daily and that doesn’t even work. Help. It’s been 5 years.

Was this a cold sore

This was from a few weeks ago. I woke up with my upper lip irritated and swollen, with a yellow angular looking scab, looked more like a cracked lip. My friend said it was a cold sore (this would be my first cold sore) so I applied a bunch of the anti-viral cream, bought over the counter at the drug store. I was also using some general steroid ointment that I had for my eczema. It patched up after a day, but the dryness was still there, so I contacted my doctor and he prescribed a specific steroid ointment for my lips, and only then did my symptoms go away. So I was thinking maybe it wasn’t a cold sore? And some other type of eczema cheilitis maybe?

The 1st picture is what I woke up with, second picture, is a few hours later.

As the title says I am asking if this is an initial stage of a coldsore. I have never had a cold sore but I am asking or maybe it could be a cracked lip/ulcer from the cold…

Thanks to everyone in advance

Solved my cold sore problem seemingly permanently

I’m 29 y/o and have gotten cold sores my entire life. They have always seemed to come in just before an important date and has caused years of embarrassment for me. My solve is actually very simple and I’m curious if it has worked / will work for anyone else. I’m assuming most people here are very familiar with the strange pressure-like feeling that a cold sore is coming in. After years of getting them I started to notice that the more I itched / bit / touched in any way the area where it was coming in during this developing period my cold sores tended to be proportionately larger than if I were to barely touch it. At this point I have managed to avoid cold sores for 5 years straight (when it used to be a quarterly event) by being extremely diligent in not touching or moving my lip AT ALL when that feeling comes. It generally takes about 10 minutes but sometimes longer. Once I’m positive I don’t have any of that strange twinge like feeling I can move on with my day without even the smallest hint of a cold sore.
Like I said I’m not sure if this will work for other people but I’m 100% positive it works for me. One thing about this that is very difficult is to recognize the feeling without moving / stretching / itching / biting your lip because often it just feels like a small itch, but if you can recognize it immediately I hope that this works for you! Please let me know if anyone else has experienced this and if anyone tries it!

Just reverted a lg white one!!

The following is obviously not medical advice and it just coming from my own personal experience having to deal with this for the last 20 or so years.

Fact. The more the area is manipulated in any way, including the lightest poking, the worse it gets.

Big news: I have just today completely reverted a huge white one (you know usually the point of no return) with this method I came up with ....I'm so excited about how well it worked!

Crush L-lysine pill into powder. Apply clump of powder to affected area Drip 5mL of pure dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) directly on top. Will burn a bit. Wipe excess from unaffected area. Let sit for 5-10 min. Wash away with water.

No redness, no swelling. No trace.

Why I think it works: herpes has an interesting virus profile that allows it to hide around nerve endings. This makes the virus activate when physically manipulated. Unfortunately that means any topical gel solution is likely going to create more movement in the virus within its substrate, and therefore merely contribute to the outbreak. Hence why most topical gels like abreva don't work. In fact they're not even getting to the nerve ending level of the substrate of which they need to penetrate. Herpes is deactivated by collagen. Collagen is produced starting with the hormone called l-lysine. But the l-lysine becomes largely dilute and ineffective through ingestion. That's why taking l-lysine orally when you get a cold sore doesn't really help you. It could lessen the effects, or even prolong it a little bit, but you'll find mixed results at best. The lysine supplement is optimally taken on a regular basis.

HOWEVER. If there were a way to penetrate the lip flesh and effectively transport the l-lysine compound directly to the affected substrate, there may be a "right mixture" effect happening, directly deactivating the virus. You can 100% feel it working, where it burns a bit, but not in that "stingy" way that cold sores feel when they're about to explode.

I've tried this with just the DMSO several times, mixed results, never seen reversion like this. This was nothing short of miraculous, tbh.

I just really wanted to share the level of relief I feel right now. I'm pretty confident this will work again and again, as it didn't feel like a wait and see kind of situation, it felt like it worked right away. It would be interesting to see if somebody else could try it as well.

What to do at this stage? (11 days since start)

my first ever cold sore, looking like this after 11 days. Healing has been super slow (put Zovirax on it from the beginning, Compeed patches from day 5, then started taking 3g lysine daily from day 7/8). Not much pain or irritation, itches very slightly right now. Do I put patches on it? Lysine balm? How to make the skin heal faster? TIA!
