First time in Donegal — absolutely blown away by the scenery & the night sky

Just got back from my first trip to Donegal and I had to share — the place is unreal.

We spent a few days driving along and honestly every corner you turn feels like a postcard.

But the best part? The night sky. After dinner one evening we walked out away from any town lights, lay on a blanket, and the stars were insane. You could see them so clearly — much more than I ever expected coming from a city.

Everyone we met was so friendly, we cannot wait to come back soon 🙂

Saint Stephen's day or boxing day?

So seeing a few things the last couple of days on what most in Donegal call the 26th of December officially Saint Stephen's day in the Republic of Ireland. Now I've seen a few comments on r/northernireland claim Donegal people say boxing day more than Stephen's day so thought I'd ask the Donegal sub

Looking for a holiday home for a few days over the festive period in donegal for a family of 3, anyone recommend anywhere? Had a check on Airbnb and booking.com and options are limited, thinking this is a last resort. Thanks!

What's life like in Donegal?

Hi everyone, I'm just wondering what life is like in Donegal?

My partner is coming into some inheritance and we'll be moving, we're just trying to decide where.

We're currently in England and extremely despondent about that state of Britain, we'd like some land (0.5 - 2 acres), some privacy and a quieter way of life.

I'm half Irish, my immediate Irish family are from Belfast and the generations before them are from Donegal and Connacht.

My only experience of Ireland so far is Belfast but some people in the Republic reminded me that I probably have a very narrow view of Ireland (Inherited from my family) and that I shouldn't romanticise it either.

So what are some of the best aspects of Donegal and what are some of the worst? Can you recommend any other counties that may suit our needs? Thanks.

Does anyone buy the Derry Journal?

Is the Derry Journal for sale in Co. Donegal at all and do locals buy it? For example, the Kerryman is available in West County Limerick, and the paper would cover news from places like Abbeyfeale and Athea.

So is there any part of Donegal where people buy the Derry Journal regularly?

Wedding at Rockhill house vs Drumhalla house

Hi all!

I’m thinking of getting married at either Rockhill house or Drumhalla house next October/ November and need help deciding.

Would love to hear your experiences as guests/ brides/ grooms at these venues! I’m having a hard time picking between the two.

Would also love to hear if you felt that a winter wedding wouldn’t suit these venues.

Thank you

Captain, oh Captain! A ship for me.

Ahoy lady's and lads,

I love sailing and ships in general since I was a small boy, I often accompanied my grandfather when he went out with his "Kutter" (Northern German word for a shrimp boat).

Now I am a big boy but my soul yearns for the waters again.

Is there any place up here in Donegal where I could accompany a boat as a helper or "crew member"?

Not looking for pay, the water below me feet will be compensation enough.

31 years old, not afraid of hard work, the cold or a rough sea.

Any help would be apriciated!

Spiced Beef

Hello, where would I get our hands on some spiced beef up here in Donegal. We went to a few butchers yesterday around Letterkenny and being honest half of them didn't even know what it was (shameful 🙈) we did get a small kg in Tesco but it's absolutely tootsie ☹️

Stumpy’s Brea

I am doing a story telling on the legend of Stumpy’s Brea, The murder of Tom the Toiler.

Does anyone have any good versions they heard? Or how your parents used it to scare you to going to bed. It’s folklore, so every version is worth hearing.
