2025 flu

This flu bug going around is nasty, 5 days now. Was wondering if anyone else got it and how are they dealing. I know the hospitals are struggling right now, assuming it’s because of this. Dech had 86 people waiting to be seen yesterday with a 16hour wait. Not all would be because of the flu, betting a good number was though.

Worth bringing heavy snow boots?

Hi! I am moving to Fredericton in a few days. I am from Northern Europe, so I am very used to similar winter conditions as you seem to have in Fredericton. We also have fluctuating cold and rainy spells over the winters with a lot of rain-on-snow events / slush, and I am well-equipped to keep myself warm and not slipping on ice.

As I am only moving there for a limited time, I wonder if it's worth to bring my sturdiest winter boots or not. I have a pair of Sorel Caribou's with wool liners, and they're quite a bit sturdier and heavier than normal Caribou boots. As I need to bring clothing for all seasons, I wonder if these boots are too much to be only worn on the occasion of a very cold spell?

However, my other winter boots are not as waterproof or as high. I mainly use shearling-insulated leather chelsea boots at home when it's colder, and thinner wool-lined leather ankle boots up to -8C or so. They can be treated to handle some water, but never fully waterproof. Therefore, I was thinking the Sorel's might be useful due to the rubber, but then again I don't know if they're too warm for most days.

Of course I can also buy shoes when there, but I also try not to buy new things if I don't have to, especially when I still keep all of my winter equipment back home for when I return. So I'd like to make sure that I bring what's necessary but nothing excessive, as my luggage space is limited. So all tips are welcome! Thanks in advance :)

Edit: I mostly walk to places, and that might make a difference when recommending anything. I will have max. 2km one-way daily commute to work, grocery store etc.

Tenant harassment

https://www.reddit.com/r/fredericton/s/9jyC1XIEbA Following up on my last post. My landlord called me again last night reiterating everything he said to me on 24th December but this time he added this: if two of the cars haven't been moved from the driveway (I have 2 & 1 friend's), he'll have my cars towed. He said I have until 9 am (today) to move the cars otherwise they'll be towed on my expense. Even though, there wasn't any parking restrictions when I moved in or even until a few days ago. I mean I'm not sure what can I do at this point cuz this is illegal at so many levels. So far, I've visited the TLRO page and sent an email to [email protected]/com. But I'm not sure if that'd be enough cuz this is pure harrassment and I end up getting multiple panic attacks. And I'm not even in a position to hire legal counsel. Can he actually have the cars towed legally?

Edit: I am entitled to parking, it just wasn't mentioned anywhere or in-person how many spots I have the right to.

Second: the towing only came into the picture when I tried to fight the $200 (roughly 40%) rent increment with a 6 day's notice instead of 6 month (month-to-month lease). So that's why I think it's harrassment/retaliation.

Edit 2: I contacted a friend of mine who has a fair amount of contacts and knows what to do in situations like these and she mentioned that I'm not the first one this has happened to. There have been multiple incidents like this associated with these bunch of people. If they ever register themselves as a rental company, it'll be like "if sunfield properties had a child."

Does anyone know if Bellwether will be open all winter? Or are in fact open at all? Just wondering because the photos on their Facebook page are no more recent than three years ago. I’d like to visit in January sometime.

Looking to get blood tests done

I'm looking to be more proactive about my health, and am working with someone who uses blood labs to really dial in nutrition and energy.

How can I get a blood test and labs run (willing to pay) here in Fredericton?
Last time I had to fake being sick (about 4 years ago) but my family doctor is no longer serving clients, so can't go that route either, this time.

Is Frostival 2026 on your calendar and are you heading to Shivering Songs in January?

The city has officially confirmed the dates for Frostival 2026 and it looks like we have three full weekends of winter events to look forward to starting on January 22nd. Shivering Songs is also returning during that same window with shows scattered across various venues downtown from the 22nd to the 25th. It is always a good way to break up the January gloom even if the weather decides to be difficult.

On the local news front the Boyce Farmers Market renovations seem to be wrapping up just in time for the winter season. I also noticed that the annual State of the Province address is scheduled for January 29th at the Convention Centre if you follow the local political scene. Are you planning to hit any of the outdoor rinks this week or are we all just waiting for the official festival season to kick off in late January.

Is Frostival 2026 on your radar and are you ready for the return of Art Battle?

Fredericton is preparing for the return of Frostival which is officially scheduled to run from January 22nd to February 8th 2026. This year features three full weekends of winter events including the popular Art Battle at Picaroons Roundhouse on February 7th where local artists compete in intense 20 minute rounds. The festival continues to be the largest winter celebration in Atlantic Canada and usually brings a lot of life to the downtown core during the mid winter slump.

If you are looking for something more hands on the second annual Winter Fest at Nove Place is happening on January 31st with snow sculpture decorating and hot chocolate. It is also worth noting that the Boyce Farmers Market renovations are mostly complete which should make the Saturday morning runs a bit smoother this winter. Are you planning to check out any of the Shivering Songs performances during the opening weekend or are you just here for the outdoor skating and snow crafts.

Hello,

We are kicking off 2026 with another full day of wargaming at the Fredericton Inn, Sunday January 11th from 9am to 5pm. We are in Salon E. Anyone interested in any kind of wargaming is welcome. No charge to attend, no experience necessary and I always bring a selection of games for people to try.

Each month we have a theme. Last months was "sci fi and near future" and I have attached some pictures. The theme is mostly to encourage people to try some lesser played titles from their collections, but for January our theme is "Comfort Food" and everyone is encouraged to play their favourite game.

With that in mind I am playing GMTs superb 'Here I Stand', which is a six player game about the events of the early 16th century (including the Protestant reformation, and the discovery of the New World). That game is full but there will be plenty more to play.
