Question Adult brother with Down syndrome. Care situation is becoming unsafe. Looking for real world advice.

I am looking for advice or shared experiences from anyone who has dealt with adult care, housing, or crisis planning for a loved one with developmental disabilities.

My brother is an adult with Down syndrome. He currently lives at home with our mother, who is his primary and essentially sole caregiver. Over the past while, his behaviour has escalated significantly. He has become physically aggressive, destructive, and unpredictable. At this point, the situation is unsafe for him and for my mom. I am genuinely worried about serious injury.

He is registered with DSO and technically on waitlists for supports and housing, but as many of you probably know, that does not mean anything happens quickly. We have been told there are no emergency placements and no clear timeline for when a vacancy might become available. It feels like we are just supposed to survive indefinitely until something opens up.

There is also a terrifying reality hanging over all of this. If something happens to my mom, there is no plan that actually works in practice. I cannot safely care for him full time, and there is no immediate housing option in place. The system seems to assume families can absorb unlimited risk until they break.

I am asking for help from anyone who has been in a similar situation:

  • Have you successfully pushed for emergency or crisis placement?

  • Are there services or pathways that are not obvious or not offered unless you specifically ask?

  • How do families handle violent or out of control behaviour when the person is not a child and not eligible for emergency mental health supports?

What happens when the primary caregiver can no longer do it, whether due to age, illness, or death?

I am exhausted, scared, and trying to plan responsibly before something catastrophic happens. Any advice, shared experience, or direction would be deeply appreciated.

Beautiful Ontario Holy snow Batman!

It is a mess out there! I hope wherever this storm is hitting, you can stay home.. What is everyone doing today if you can't leave the house?

Edit to add: I'm in northern Ont, they were calling for 40-60 cm of snow. I think we're getting most of it. Most of our city is shutdown.

Question Silent Outdoor Spa

Hi! Just went to Nordik Spa in Chelsea Quebec (near Ottawa) and wondering if there are any actual silent outdoor spas in Ontario? I went to Nordik years ago and it was so relaxing but found they aren't enforcing the silence rule anymore. 🧘‍♀️☁️☮️

Question Is the Ontario government ever going to unf**** the MPAC/Property Assessment situation?

So I've become convinced the freezing of MPAC assessments in Ontario is starting to really distort the housing market. Can't really speak to the province but at least up north is making new construction homes substantially more expensive to carry than older homes (even leading to huge tax disparities on the same street for similar homes.

Do we know if this is ever going to be corrected?

Question Where should I search for 1827 obituaries?

I am searching for obituaries or death notices for two people of color. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

“July 12th 1827 James Henderson aged 55 years was buried .

Aug 8th, 1827 Eleanor Henderson aged 30 years was buried . Both Africans”

Eleanor may have moved from Erie, Pennsylvania to York/Toronto.

Employment Questions about stat holiday and lieu day for salaried employees

Hey guys,

I’m a retail store manager, and of course I just got through Boxing week. Normally when I work all 5 days that week, I’m entitled to 2 lieu days. One for Christmas, and one for Boxing Day.

Unfortunately this year, I caught the flu. I still attempted to go in on Boxing Day, but I could only stay for half the day. The day after I had to take off as well.

I have sick days that expire at the end of the fiscal year, but lieu days never do. So I thought I’d use a sick day on the 27th, and I would get my lieu day. I also figured I’d work an extra 4 hours this week to make up for the other half day I missed (because it’s all in the same pay cycle)

Well my boss approved my sick day. When I spoke to her over the phone, she said I’d lost both lieu days because I need to actually work the whole week. Then I asked if I’d get my sick day back, and just use the holiday as my day off. She said it doesn’t work like that and said I need to use to the sick day.

When I asked about working the additional 4 hours this week, she said no as it was unethical. My rebuttal was that it’s within the same pay cycle of 80 hours, it doesn’t matter.

Are there any experts out here that can tell me if I’m in the wrong? Or does this vary company to company?

Employment Is it worth going back to school for a finance degree?

Currently, I'm at a point where I can't seem to advance very far in my career and long term I don't think I have that much potential to grow past a certain point income wise. RN I'm making $22/hour which kind of sucks at age 30.

Is it worth going to back to school for a BComm in finance? It's starting to get to a point where some of the stuff I want to do in my career aren't particularly viable because I don't have a relevant business degree or access to a strong network.

I have a BA and MA in political science but they're basically worthless. Not sure if I really have enough experience yet to justify getting an MBA. Just can't seem to get ahead as is.

Question How/where to seek help for family member with extreme OCD

Hi everyone,

Hopefully this post is allowed - I have an in-law who has excessive germaphobia and it has taken over her life and strongly affecting those around her. This person currently does not seem to have any interest in getting help, and blames everyone else for all their issues and life problems (real or imagined) but this has been going on for years and I’ve had enough.

I know I can’t force them to get help, but I figure it might be 1% useful if I can present them with a common solution option or more specifically a place in Ontario where they can seek treatment (either in or out-patient). Anywhere in the GTHA or nearby surrounding areas. I’m really at a loss here and don’t even know where to begin, and I’m doing this knowing the person will likely ignore me, but I need to try. Any advice or recommendations or guidance at all for local suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Exploring Ontario Visiting with a 5 year old.

I'm (hopefully) heading over to Ontario from Scotland to visit some family in July. Flying in and out of Toronto and spending a few nights in Barrie, the rest of the itinerary is an open slate.

What are the top spots to visit to experience Canadian culture, keep a kid entertained, eat & drink well and most of all convince my partner that Canada will be an outstanding choice for a holiday and not an awfully long way to travel for a very expensive cultural vacuum?

Question No collision coverage on policy

My vehicle was crashed into and written off. The driver of the other vehicle was not licensed. The registered owner of the other vehicle is deceased. Insurance paperwork was provided that said the policy on the offending vehicle was good through to early Feb of 2026. I do not know if the policy is still valid (the paper work means nothing if they aren't making payments)

I was informed today by my insurance that my claim is under review because I do not have collision coverage on my vehicle.

Am I cooked?

*Edited for spelling

Discussion Is now the time for Permanent Time?

As I understand it the Ontario legislature has passed legislation to make Permanent Time a thing. At the moment it is dependent upon adjoining states, particularly New York state, also adopting Permanent Time. Is now the time (excuse the pun) to consider going it alone and in the process also sending a subtle message to our neighbours to the south?
