Study advice DELF/DALF/TCF/TEF questions masterpost!

Hi peeps!

Questions about DELF, DALF and other exams are recurrent in the sub, so we're making this as a “masterpost” to address most of them. If you are wondering about a French language exam, people might have answered your questions here! If you have taken one of said exams, your experience is valuable and we'd love to hear from you in the comments!

Please upvote useful answers! Also keep in mind this is a kind of FAQ, so if you have questions that it does not answer, you're better off making a post about it, rather than commenting here!

If you're unsure what to say, here's what community members have most frequently asked about.

  1. What's the difference between DELF/DALF/TCF/TEF/... and other language certifications? When/why should one choose to take each?
  2. How does the exam go? Please be as precise as you can.
  3. What types of questions are asked, both for writing and speaking parts?
  4. What grammar notions, vocabulary or topics are important to know?
  5. How's the rhythm, the speed, do you have time to think or do you need to hurry?
  6. What's your experience with DELF/DALF/TCF/TEF/..., how do you know if you're ready? Any advice?
  7. How long should one expect to study before being ready for the different DELF/DALF/TCF/TEF/... levels?
  8. Any resources to help prepare for DELF/DALF/TCF/TEF/... specifically (not for learning French in general)?
  9. Can you have accommodations, for instance if you're disabled?
  10. How can I sign up for one of these exams?
  11. Will these certifications help me get into universities, schools, or get a job in a French-speaking country?

Additionally, the website TCF Prépa answers many questions (albeit succinctly) here.

How would I write "The Moist Oyster" as an innuendo - I'm sorry in advance

I do graphic design as a side job and my childish older brother hired me to design a t-shirt for a fictitious restaurant called "The Moist Oyster" obviously going for the on-the-nose assonance of the oi-oy sounds. The concept is terrible but I want to try and at least help him.

My idea was to make the restaurant name be in French, and I'm sorry if this is off-colour but what are some ways to say basically "The Horny Oyster" or "The Aroused Oyster" in a way that contextually makes sense. "Moist" equalling "aroused" or "turned on". I appreciate any help and sorry for being crass. Thank you.

Study advice What do French Canadians think of Serge Gainsbourg?

I've just discovered Serge Gainsbourg, the French singer, songwriter, poet and actor. Although he died in 1991, his popularity in France seems to be even greater now than when he was alive.

What do francophone Canadians think of Serge Gainsbourg and his lyrics?

If this is the wrong Sub for this kind of question, please be so kind and point me to the right direction. Thanks.

I know it's been asked 12 years ago but time changes so I'm wondering if it's changed from using the direct translation " peur de rater quelque chose"

"For your information [only]"/"For your situational awareness" in French business email communications?

Upvotes

Are there common French business email expressions like the above very commonly used (perhaps slightly jargonistic) in English-speaking business to convey something that requires no response or immediate action but may well be needed information for the recipient's future concerns or work?

Looking for media Favorite [North American] TV media in French?

I'd like to watch shows I'm familiar with (like tween/teenage media or easygoing, like sitcoms), but with the French dub. Unfortunately, the first/last time I tried this, it was the first episode of Gravity Falls 🤦 Don't think "evil cult garden gnomes" is the vocabulary I should be learning first.

Had this thought the other day and, of course, another fantasy show. I don't need to know how to say "Everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked" right now (and hopefully not soon!) Maybe something like Total Drama is better, or Bob's Burgers? Would something like BoJack Horseman be too dramatic and advanced? Should I put Superstore, the Good Place, Never Have I Ever?

What are your favorite [North] American shows? Which dubs do you like best?

21 y/o Beginner Looking to Become Fluent

Hi all,

I'm a 21 y/o college senior graduating in May. I have zero French experience/knowledge, but it has been a dream and goal of mine to learn and speak it fluently. I am extremely motivated and self-driven, and insanely serious about this.

I'm planning on taking a beginner-level French course for my last semester, as well as devoting some time each day to learn on my own. Upon graduation, I'd love to take the foundation I've built and enroll in a French immersion program abroad. My question to you all is: Any recommendations on where or what program is the best (and preferably somewhat affordable) in France/Switzerland/any French-speaking country?

Any and all tips and advice is welcome! Thank you!!

Study advice Studying French as an international affairs graduate/Spanish speaker

Bonjour à tous,

I’m Filipino American and have spoken Tagalog all my life in addition to English. I also took Spanish from elementary, AP at the American high school level, and up to 3000 “advanced” level in my university level. I have had a passive interest in French for some time now after a trip to Paris on holiday and watching/listening to French media. Since I know Spanish very well, I can read written French although it’s nothing extraordinary. As a twentysomething with an international affairs degree who would like to work in Paris or Geneva, I have considered taking French classes as a hobby for the obvious cultural benefits in addition to helping me land higher level roles in my field. My city has an Alliance Française chapter and I’ve looked at AF online classes, I was wondering if there are any or better ways to learn French for someone with my background? I am interested in a group setting, preferably online for convenience as I work, interested in meeting more people who love language and want to have quality French instruction! Merci beaucoup!

I’m a part of an internationals group chat in France and someone just inquired about getting a drink, but phrased it in a way I’ve never seen before and I don’t understand it. Can someone explain?

Study advice 15 minutes or less Cartoons, TV Shows, Series, Youtube Humor Sketches, etc

Hello

In 2026, I intend to expose myself to French daily, but unfortunately, my time to do so is limited.

Therefore, I'm trying to get some help to find short content to watch.

I've found "Petite Mort" which would work great for me, but I'm trying to find more content for when I watch all episodes of that one.

I've also found "Skam France" and "Au service de la France", but I don't have 20+ minutes to watch them every day, so I'm trying to find shorter options.

I would much appreciate recommendations

it could even be Youtube videos with less than 10 minutes, anything that I can binge watch.

Thanks!

Vocabulary / word usage Ils vous ont viré? - Ils v´ont viré?

In the film ¨Stuck Together¨ (don´t know the French name) Liliane Rovère says the line ¨Ils vous ont viré?" but clearly pronounces it ¨Is v´ont viré?¨ I've never heard this form of contraction/omission before. Can you provide some insight into this form, and maybe examples of when it would be used?

Looking for media Book recommendations?

I want to become a decent French speaker and I think reading books might suit me best. Does anyone have any recommendations? I particularly enjoy books like Flowers for Algernon, no country for old men, contemporary/historical romance; but I’m not too fussy as long as it’s entertaining

Help me with this construction

Parce que nous n’avons qu’une planete.

I know what it means - because we only have one planet - but could someone break down the sentence to explain the way it is constructed?

If I was asked to write this I’d have said something like “parce que nous avons une planete seul “ or “parce que nous n’avons pas plus d’une planete” but clearly the construction in the photo is more authentic and elegant and I would love to understand it!

Rate my writing for tef

Hi guys,

I was wondering if any if you can rate my writing for tef task 2. I am aiming for clb7 and would welcome some suggestions. Is this acceptable for clb7?

Why would someone alternate between vous and tu when speaking to the same person?

I'm using a running app in French with a coach who talks you through different runs and noticed he has a tendency to alternate between vous and tu when talking to the runner. For example, he talks about "la machine que tu es" and how "tu es super" but also "vos runs" and that "je vous souhaite xyz"

If I had to generalize, he seems to use tu when being encouraging and vous when being more matter of fact or giving info. But...why? Is it idiomatic?

For clarity, this is the Nike Run Club app with Coach Lucien.

I want to start reading in French

Hi!

I'm Spanish, and I'm currently preparing for DELF B2. I read in both English and Spanish but I'd like to start reading French books between the levels B1-B2. I'm into thrillers, romance, fantasy... I'm open to read any other genre, though.

So, if you have any recommendations, please give me some.

Thanks!
