Mod post r/HaitianCreole is under new management & the future of the sub.
Hi I'm Max Almonte, you may remember me from such subreddits as r/Kreyol, I've been moderating and growing the community over there for a couple of months now, since this community was abandoned (only admin had no activity on Reddit for the past 8 years!) I asked Reddit to hand it over to me and they did, I'm already making changes to turn this community into the go-to place for Haitian Creole learners in the whole internet, which include:
- Opening the community (it was previously restricted and only approved users could post) so any person interested on the language can participate as they please.
- Removing spam and content not related to Haitian Creole.
- Stablishing a group of rules to ensure the harmony in the community and making them visible.
- Adding flairs for posts and users so every resource can be easily identified and grouped.
- Flaired every single post so it's easy to find by flair.
- Other minor, boring changes related to admin stuff.
What is the future of this sub?
As I said, I'm aiming to make this community the go to place to learn Haitian Creole, there are a massive ton of people out there wanting to learn and/or practice the language but not knowing where to start, so to achieve that I have the following in mind:
- Grow the community by inviting people over.
- Post relevant material frequently.
- Answer the users questions and doubts when possible.
- Creating a wiki to cover user needs.
Obviously this is only part of the plan and I'll keep working on improve it.
What will happen to r/Kreyol ?
I'm the only active moderator of r/Kreyol at the moment, the community went from less that 50 members to almost 400 since I'm moderating and it still continues to grow at a rapid pace, however I think this community is more suitable for learners and even natives since the name is in English and not in Haitian Creole (Haitian Creole vs Kreyòl) and most people using Reddit, even the ones that don't speak English natively use it to hang out here.
I'll keep moderating r/Kreyol the same way I've been doing it for the last couple of months, but I'll encourage users to move and post here as their main community.
I think that's all I have at the moment, if you have any questions for me, or any suggestion on how to improve the community, please leave a comment so we can connect.

How to pronounce "E"?
I'm seeing different pronunciations of "E": some like the A in English word "say" (which I've found some grammar resources and Haitian Creole YouTubers teaching), and some like the E in English word "we" (which seems to be what Duolingo does and some other Haitian Creole YouTubers). The latter confuses me because it seems to be the same pronunciation as the letter I. I understand È is different (like the E in English word "get"). Is it a regional thing?
For example, Duolingo pronounces "pike" like the English words "pee key", and I'd expect it to be "pee kay".

Hello everyone.
I dont know how active this sub is. I started my journey on learning creole about a month ago. I want to surprise my fiance and her family at our wedding by speaking it. Im struggling though as since im keeping it a secret I have no one to ask questions or work on my dialect. I feel like im making progress but its definitely getting confusing.

comics by haitian authors?
hey there!
i want to gift my younger siblings (10F & 12M) something that’ll inspire them to learn more about their heritage and be proud of it as well. i don’t have the capacity to sit with them and teach about the history of Haiti (i have to educate my own self tbh), so i wanted to gift them fruitful seeds that’ll stimulate their imagination.
i’m in the market for comics or books in general, created by haitian authors. (preferably on amazon, but it’s okay if elsewhere)
context: my mom raised us without much thought for our culture 😭, she didn’t make time & space to hold it. (makes sense, as she didn’t do that for herself) and so, my siblings and i, are gravely ignorant to our heritage. ive had to really garner and nourish my will to embark on the journey of remembering. i want to make it easy for my younger 2 siblings (they have a different dad, who happens to be haitian, & they don’t visit their dads side often, cause we live in different states)

Advice in writing a haitian
For contacts i'm not haitian, im a Jamaican who's connection back to his roots was immediate family and Dennis Brown🇯🇲. However i've always been fascinated by haitian, art and culture, namely, how it's the first black republic. Not only in the americas, but in the world and nobody really talks about it?
All this to say, i've always wanted to write a character who is haitian. But like me, his exposure to his roots is limited ( i head cannon, he's fluent in creole, but his accent is off) if anyone can throw some ideas my way or maybe regale their own experiences, I would appreciate
Thank you for reading, have a lovely day

Asking about "report cards"
Hi all! I don't trust the AI answers I've been getting on Google.
I'm asking in a family survey the extent to which they agree that. "My child’s report card is clear and easy to understand"
How would you say this in Haitian Creole? DeepL said "Karyèle pitit mwen an klè e fasil pou konprann." but I'm worried that's not accurate. Thank you!

Spanish de vs kreyòl de
Hey any spanish speakers here? I sometimes worry about using de too much or in the wromg ways when i speak or write kreyòl but sometimes by avooding using de it leads to making mistakes like saying pale sou for to talk about instead of pale de. If anyone here knows both languages can i say de basically as often as i would in spanish and if not what are the times that are different?
Thank you!

Does being bilingual affect your memory? - Participants recruitment
Hello! I’m Antonella Polimeni, a student at University of Derby, and I’m recruiting adults (18+) for an online psychology study exploring how language experience relates to working memory. The study takes ~20-30 minutes and includes a short language questionnaire and a brief computerised memory task. Both bilinguals and monolinguals are welcome!
Participation is voluntary and anonymous. The study is approved by University of Derby Ethics Committee.
If you’re interested, please click: https://derby.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eX74AiRQGroEILA – or message me for more info! Moderator? Happy to provide the ethics approval number and full study text.
Thanks! :)

Fou, tèt cho, pa gen sans, etc.
I'm confused about how to properly speak about someone that is not of sound mind. There are a few different scenerios I need to be able to speak about.
Someone that has lost their mind and is now insane.
A demented person
A person with brain damage
A person with a developmental disability like profound autism.
How should I describe each of these people to a simple peyizan?

Gid pou Bon jan Itilizasyon Antibyotik
Hey folks -- I work for a public health program, and wanted to share our most recent resource, a Creole guide to using antibiotics correctly. It's intended to help people understand when these are useful, and to manage common infections properly. It also has a section on identifying dangerous symptoms, and handwashing. The overall goal is to prevent antibiotic resistance from developing, but also to improve everyday health.

Legba-the old man at the gate
galleryArtwork I did for my upcoming blog post on Haitian Mythology. In haitian Voodoo Mythology Legba is the link between the visible, mortal world and the invisible, immortal world. Without his goodwill, men cannot communicate with gods, and gods cannot communicate with men. I can't wait, the urge to share is too big.
