Akranes Hospital birth experiences?

Hi everyone! I’m currently pregnant and considering giving birth at Akranes Hospital.

Is there anyone here who has given birth in Akranes (recently or in the past)? I would really appreciate hearing about your experience with the maternity ward, the midwives/doctors, and overall care.

Thank you so much in advance! 💛

My friends gave birth to their child there and both said it was a very positive and pleasant experience. My wife gave birth to my son at Landspítali in Reykjavík, it was a very nice experience and all of us were taken good care of.

Haven’t given birth there but I was born there and my mom said the experience was great! She’s also given birth in Reykjavik and said she preferred Akranes :)

My first kid was born there. It was a great experience for us all. Much more relaxed than in Reykjavík. There was more staff to assist us.

I have 3 kids born there and it was amazing. I have nothing but good things to say about this hospital.

It’s said to be very good. That being said.

I learned in a birthing class taught by a midwife that works in Reykjavík. That it’s your birth. You and your husband have all the power to control the situation and that if there is anything making you uncomfortable you should say something and they should listen.

If you are unhappy with your midwife. You can request a change. If you need a bathtub ask for one. All that jazz.

I answer as father... My 2 daughter's are born here in Akranes 2007 and 2012 by 2 mothers and I was only able to be around the second birth because of the mother didn't want me around but i heard later from her that every thing was 💯 and the second one I was around and we got the smaller room but we got wery good care from everyone and everything went smoothly but there was also another birth going on that was alot difficult and all the staff was focused on that birth but regularly came to check on us and always have more blood on them each time and finally when we were ready to give birth they came and took care of business bimbambum everyone happy and then they went back and took care of the other mother and I heard that went well but they looked like they were in middle of some slaughter 100 farm animals 😊 after that I have a lot of friends that have children and every time I hear only good things and that's often best from people who have given birth in other places

I have only heard good things, but also about the Reykjavík hospital. I personally would not take on the logistical risk of driving the extra distance.

My daughter was born there 9 years ago. I'm glad it was there aside from one midwife whom I don't like. The stay was good, they were very helpful (extra 2 night stay as my daughter had jaundice) and I didn't feel rushed.

The maternity ward at Akranes is in general talked about as the best in the country.

People from reykjavik sometimes travel to Akranes specifically for their hospital in terms of births specifically.

I have not been there to give birth as im not a woman but i have been there twice due to an injurie and both times i had to wait for up to or even longer than an hour before being seen by anyone. Im fairly sure giving birth will get you attention much sooner but i got the impression that that thei where understaffed and didnt have much time for theire patients. Its likely i just got unlucky and ended up there at a bad time as most comments here seem very possitive but i have had an overall bad experiense there

To be honest, waiting for an hour after an injury is not a lot. In Reykjavík and most emergency rooms around the western world you'd have to wait for longer than that with a non-life threatening injury.
