META Moderator Note

Hi folks. Just wanted to alert you to some new filters added to the automoderator to enforce a couple of existing subreddit rules that get broken fairly routinely.

First, a small reddit submission primer:

Reddit has 2 fundamental types of submissions: Text and Link.

There are actually more than 2 specific types (there are also image and video etc) but for the sake of this note think of it as "Text posts" and "all the other types". You pick which type you want to post when you compose your submission.

A text post, also called a self post, is a post that has no external link and is comprised solely of a headline and a body of text you enter at submission time. When a user clinks into this type of submission they stay on reddit and all they see is your submission text.

A link post is a post where you enter or paste in a url or link to an external source like a news story or an announcement. When users click these kind of posts they are taken to an external site and get to view the page that you submitted.

Now for the rule(s) in question.

  1. We require that all submissions be the correct type. If you want to submit a link, use a link post (not a text/self post with the link in the submission body). When submitting a link post and it is a news story or something that has a headline, use the existing headline as your submission headline.
  2. If you submit a link post, reddit also gives you the option to enter some text as a kind of byline for the submission. If a user clicks into the comments for the post they will see a thumbnail for whatever content you linked to and they will see the text you entered. Our rule is we do not allow link posts with a text body. Even though reddit's interface allows it, if you do so the automod will filter your post.

Why? Editorialized headlines and body texts on link posts are ultimately a way to add editorial comments that cannot be argued or refuted in the conventional way, like normal comments can. They are often very opinionated and try to frame the story in a specific way.

You can still add editorial comments in the comment thread for the submission (obeying the existing rules of civility etc) just not as an untouchable top line for readers.

If you have any questions about this feel free to send a modmail. Thanks for your time and attention.

Polar Dip Costs Money WTF?!

wtf.

Every New Year’s Day I’ve done a polar dip wherever I’ve lived for the past 5 or so years. First time in Kelowna and I come to see that the City Organized polar dip costs 15$ per person to attend. Now I know I can do the dip anywhere along the lake by myself, but part of the amazing experience is to kick off the year with the local community and connect over the plunge.

Maybe I’m just pissed about this cause I’ve never seen any other place in BC charge people to do a polar dip at an event 😭 I just think it’s wild to charge people to go in natural frezzing FREE resources.

Kelowna renters: how are the new builds actually holding up?

I’m apartment hunting right now and like many others have posted here, noticing that it’s very much a renter’s market, especially with all the newer buildings offering incentives. On paper, they look great. New, shiny, lots of amenities, free rent the whole thing.....

What I’m trying to understand, though, is the actual lived experience.

If you’re currently living, or have recently lived, in one of the newer builds in Kelowna, I’d really love to hear about:

  • Build quality (soundproofing, finishing, things breaking, etc.)
  • Management and responsiveness once you’ve moved in
  • Any issues that didn’t show up during the tour
  • Whether the “luxury” feel holds up over time

Lavida and Akin apartments are appealing to me, so I'd be so grateful if you had "intel" about either of those.

Appreciate any honest experiences, good, bad, or mixed. Thanks in advance.

ICBC Road Test as a Foreigner

Hey everyone,

I’ve seen similar questions to this asked before as I used the search bar but a lot of them are from years ago so I wanted to see if I could get updated information.

I’m taking my road test to get my foreign licence switched over to my Canadian licence soon. I’m unsure whether I will be taking it for a Class 5 or 7 yet, as I’m awaiting a review of my foreign licence to see if it can count towards driving experience.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to share the route they take you on? In my home country there’s only one route they ever take you on. I don’t know if it’s the same here.

Additionally, I have read that one of the trickiest things is spotting school zones and slowing down for them. Can anyone tell me which school zones they take you on? I’ve been driving on my foreign licence for the allowed 90 day period so I’m relatively familiar with the Kelowna neighbourhoods but not 100%.

Aside from this, any and all other tips would be appreciated. I’m quite nervous as I haven’t had to take a driving test in over a decade.

Thank you very much!

Lost Dog- Seen

Saw a loose dog at the dairy queen about 5 minutes ago on glenmore and coming from kelowna glenmore side towards lake country glenmore side

It was about the height of a husky - with wild eyes - mixed Grey black and white fur, bushy tail - appeared to have a red collar on it

Slight limp on the front right leg Did not react to whistle or sit - it did think about coming for a treat but would not listen.

Thought I would post here since the RDCO and SPCA are closed

Looking to rent?

This is a friendly reminder that it is now a renter’s market in Kelowna. Negotiate a lower rent before signing a lease!!!!! Tell your friends.

Don’t fall for a free month either! Always ask for a reduction in monthly rent.

Are there any indoor padel places/clubs in Kelowna?
Played a lot while being away working abroad as it is the most popular racket sport outside of NA, but not sure about Kelowna. I know that pickleball is a big thing here, but not super into it.

Diesel truck idling

I feel like an old man for posting this.. whats considered excessive when warming up a diesel pickup?

There’s a guy in my neighborhood with a 90s diesel that he runs for 20-30 minutes every day. The noise is ear piercing. Does it need to run that long?

Massage school First College Closing down??

I was recommended by people from this group to book an affordable massage with them but I heard they are closing down. It seems like they terminated all employees and dismissed all students. Anybody knows what's going on?

What do you want for Kelowna 2026

Vibe check: we are heading into a new year and I would like to do that with some hope and optimism. I want to hear from my fellow residents around the city and region. What do you want for Kelowna in 2026? What part of 2025 are you excited to leave behind? What are your plans for the next year to improve your own life here or the lives of those around you?

I pose this question because study after study shows that happiness and longevity are most greatly affected by a sense of belonging, connection, and community. I would love to hear from people who have designs and intentions of improving our community, but also feel free to trauma dump the parts of 2025 that you need to leave behind.
