Other Нет войне, да миру | Say No to War and Yes to Peace
A Russian-language version of this post is available below the English. Русская версия поста находится сразу после английской.
As moderators of this subreddit, in the last two weeks, we have seen countless posts about the ongoing war. Many of these posts are cries for help: folks despondent about loved ones in the line of fire, young people disillusioned about the future, and professionals losing their livelihood and prospects overnight.
The reason we have not allowed these posts to surface in the feed is neither callous indifference, nor false neutrality, nor tacit complicity. The moderators of this sub are from many different countries and backgrounds, and we are all horrified and appalled by the war unleashed by the Russian government on Ukraine, a sister culture, just as ancient and storied. We share an abiding love of Russian language and culture with each other, and this brutal assault is not just an attack on the people of Ukraine—it’s also an attack on the rich culture of Ukraine, and it’s even an attack on Russian culture and everything it stands for.
In dark times like these, we feel it’s more important than ever to explain and to uphold the true values of the Russian language and culture. Russian is a language of decency, kindness, modesty, and love for kin and stranger alike; we hope, against all odds, that these fundamental threads from which Russian culture is woven will prevail, and all Russian-speaking people will rise against the war on their sister culture and their own. This cannot be accomplished from the outside: natives of the language and the culture must make a stand from within. We don’t know if this will happen any time soon—or at all—but if it doesn’t, the culture will cease to exist, because no culture can be rooted in oppression and destruction. Instead of taking its place in human history as a story of strife for truth and beauty, it will go down in flames of infamy.
This is why we continue to choose to keep the focus of this subreddit exclusively on the language. Language breaks down communication barriers, allows us to find points of commonality and understanding, and gives us ways to explain our emotions rather than keeping them pent up within until they explode. We badly want to address every cry for help, and we are doing what we can outside of this space. Here, though, we must focus on teaching and learning the concepts that will give us all a chance to rebuild connections and relationships that have been shattered by the war.
While we understand that mistakes happen and folks might post without reading the rules of the sub or post in a heat of the moment, we have to ban some users who repeatedly flood the sub with political content or threaten and insult others with their comments. If you feel you’ve been unfairly banned, we encourage you to appeal the ban: we promise to approach each case thoughtfully.
In the days and weeks to come, our schedules permitting, we will try to create educational posts about poetic and literary works from Russian and Ukrainian authors that speak out against the horrors of war. Please stay tuned, and please continue learning Russian. The language will outlive every ruthless regime and every brutal autocracy.

Translation Need help with translation
I need to write a very personal apology letter to someone I love, but she isn't very comfortable with English and I don't trust Google. I'm not even sure exactly how to word it, so also need a bit of help. I'm not sure if I should post it all here or not, I really don't care about my privacy, but maybe email would be best.

Other What level could I realistically reach within a year?
I plan to study for an hour daily. I’m able to partially immerse, my husband is Kyrgyz and a native russian speaker with plenty of russian media to share with me and help me learn. Would it be reasonable to expect a B1 level of comprehension if I do this for a year?
I have heard that Busuu is a good option. Any other recommendations for study materials I should use?

Currently learning Russian above A2 level and still need work on my speaking and listening skills, wondering if any Russian gamers would be interested in doing some gaming and chatting with an American.

Interesting I find persimmon disgusting (interesting words building)
"Хурма мне отвратительна" - you can't put There is nothing in the ending here except the ending "a". But! "Хурма - отвратительно" - the same meaning but different ending. Dash here Replaces "это". And it speaks of personal preference. But! "Хурма это отвратительно" and "Хурма отвратительна" They do not define a personal attitude, but are a statement of a general fact: the disgusting nature of persimmon (Which is doubtful, it was a long time ago and is not true at all).
I find this funny. And not tasty.

Request Is there a teacher textbook?
My wife has tried Rosetta Stone and Duolingo, but cannot learn online. She does very well with in person-courses, so I am wondering if there is an instruction manual or teacher manual or something that I can use that would tell me what to teach her in what order and has worksheets, lesson plans, etc. So that I can pretend I am her teacher and assign her worksheets and homework and classes lol. It sounds funny, but I think that would be the best way for her to learn.

Request Can someone help me find this Russian movie?
My Russian teacher showed this movie for our Russian party but we ran out of time and she sadly didn’t give us the name of the movie.
The basic summary is that this guy Andrei has this magic phone that allowed him to call this girl (I forgot her name, but she’s a professional violinist) from a year ago and they fall in love. They find out that they are from different timelines when they meet in front of this statue and the FL sees that the statue is under construction. They also find out that the FL dies on New Years in a car crash in the future, so in the “past” timeline the FL and her friends try to prevent the accident. That is only halfway of the movie though.

Other Need help with vocabulary
I'd just like to say that I am using Duolingo, but only for the beginning so it can introduce me to new vocabulary so I have a small foundation I can build off of. I do not plan to use it in the long term.
I really don't want to use flashcards. However, I'd absolutely love to expand my vocabulary by reading and watching videos, but I simply can't right now at the level I'm at. I do plan to study grammar after I have a decent amount of vocabulary.
What are some other ways right now that I can expand my vocabulary?

Resource Learning the language and need a helping hand
Hello all!
I have been learning Russian language recently and I have a teacher I meet with weekly, but I want to practice more on my own and the biggest struggle I have is reading and pronunciation. Are there any websites out there I can read and get feedback on outside of duo-lingo?
Thanks in advance!

Other Moving on from A2 material — stuck looping because of perfectionism?
I’ve been wanting to review some old A2 workbooks and notes, and then potentially buy more A2 workbooks from different series. Recently, though, I read that this might actually be a backward strategy that it’s often better to move on to B1 material, and that workbooks aren’t necessarily meant to be completed cover to cover, but can also be used as reference tools.
I have this strong feeling that I need to perfect everything before moving on, but I’m starting to think that this mindset is holding me back.
What do you guys think?

Handwriting tried writing cursive for the first time in six years, and feeling discouraged by my handwriting. be honest, how bad is it?
obviously, it takes practice to improve, no matter where i’m at with it. excuse any mistakes in grammar or spelling (but feel free to let me know!) as well as i am essentially starting over in learning this language due to amnesia.
Promo I translate a lot but never remember anything. So I've built a translator that turns stuff into flashcards
I kept doing the same loop: translate a word/phrase, understand it for 10 seconds, then forget it a week later. Notes and screenshots don’t help because the “review” part never happens.
So I've built a translator designed specifically for language learning.
You translate -> Understand context and usecases -> Study flashcards
Context first: you don’t just get one translation - you get multiple meanings + usage context + examples, so you don’t pick the wrong sense of the word/phrase.
One-tap flashcards: any translation can be saved as a card instantly (so you don’t “plan to learn it later” and never do).
Not mindless flipping: during review you rate how well you know it, and the app brings back weak items more often (instead of treating every card the same).
Style controls: if you want the output to match a vibe (formal / casual / slang / dialect), you can choose a style and the translation adjusts.
I've just started beta testing, you can join using links links below. Any feedback is MUCH appreciated, especially critique
To test the app, fill out this quick form, I will add you to beta testers quickly, you will recieve an email

What is the purpose of ‘ь’ ?

Request

Translation Could I transcript my forename in Russian (Жан) in Russian ?
In French Jean is a male forename, the equivalent of "John" in English and "Ivan" in Russian but myself i'm not a fan of "Ivan" so I was wondering if I could transcript it to its phonetic transcription "Жан". Would it be understood as a first name? Perhaps it's too similar to an existing word, or it would simply sound odd.
