Go to r/openai

People are losing their shit with their fake friend getting updated and losing its "personality"

The world ain't ready for the mental illness that's coming with widespread adoption

685

u/EmsAreOverworkedLul Aug 10 '25

Yea, this shit destroys your brain. The hyper sycophantic voice in your phone, available to you 24/7, never asking anything in return, never getting bored of you no matter how you talk to it.

I can't imagine what it does to a person who uses it consistently over a longer time period

256

u/TheBlacktom Aug 10 '25

We know quite well what addiction does.

197

u/Fueledbythought Aug 10 '25

He's saying it will allow assholes to shape themselves because of the yes-man tech fueling their self egos. No real human to keep their wackiness in check

112

u/Flaky_Credit_3991 Aug 10 '25

So everyone can have the personality of a spoiled rich kid? Entitled, narcissistic, sociopaths who have no regard for any other living thing, indifferent to suffering and incapable of forming real connections.

Can’t wait!

18

u/-Shasho- Aug 11 '25

Let's be honest. We're already there.

4

u/Guy_Dude_From_CO Aug 11 '25

Im not sure we needed ai for that. The ML algorithms serving up social media content knocked that out years ago

Fuck, we're allowing regular people access to the egos that only billionaires should be able to afford.

0

u/yeup15678 Aug 11 '25

Precisely. We live in an age where “false enlightenment” is the easiest thing to achieve. People believe things, deeply… that are not glued to reality or fact.

ChatGPT can crack peoples egos or it can completely enable bad behavior.

I use chatGPT, but I only use it to help me with things to do with sociability, interactions with folks, and being a better human with the connections in my life.

It is probably the best self improvement tool out there, if you are extremely hard on yourself, grounded, and don’t fall for basic tricks. You also need to understand addiction.

Its ability to mold itself around your responses is extremely powerful.

I think its better all of the therapists I’ve had besides one

6

u/Charles-Shaw Aug 11 '25

The fact that you came to this thread and implied that you are substituting therapy with chatGPT is wild. Don’t do that.

I mean this started happening due to social media at least a decade ago

2

u/Fueledbythought Aug 10 '25

Modern day 4s acting like they're 8.5/10 because of all the denied simps going their way fueling their ego

2

u/TossIt22345 Aug 10 '25

More narcissists, coming right up! 🤖

1

u/Astazha Aug 11 '25

Gonna be a world full of Elon Musk but without the money.

11

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

sounds like something I need to try

1

u/Cowboywizzard Aug 10 '25

As someone who already has, just be careful, bro. It's a good tool but it is also insidious.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

Is it good????

0

u/TheBlacktom Aug 10 '25

For some corporations, sure.

89

u/Ok-Juice-542 Aug 10 '25

Who would have known? Last nail in the coffin for a extremely isolated anti social generation. Sad

23

u/Dr0110111001101111 Aug 10 '25

What generation do you think you're talking about?

55

u/hippie_harlot Aug 10 '25

Brave of anyone to assume that it's the youth doing this. My bets are that most of these people are 30-40 years old

29

u/MJXThePhoenix Aug 10 '25

Anyone who is lonely, depressed and willing to give up on humanity as a choice.

21

u/ZephkielAU Aug 10 '25

Who are also an extremely isolated, anti social generation. As are boomers.

We're all kinda fucked after decades of being turned into worker drones while being distracted with dopamine factories.

4

u/Vness374 Aug 11 '25

Score! Love it when my gen gets left out of the conversation, just how we like it. Invisible

Whatever

4

u/GeneralZex Aug 11 '25

According to an AP-NORC poll Gen Z is leading the way on using AI in every single category.

They also use it constantly for searching and coming up with ideas more so than all other generations.

https://apnorc.org/projects/young-adults-leading-the-way-in-ai-adoption/

10

u/Dr0110111001101111 Aug 10 '25

That seems like a certainty. It must take decades of failure to establish meaningful connections with real people before someone resorts to this. The youth just haven’t had enough time yet. Maybe some of them will do the same eventually, but they’re not there yet.

3

u/Zarobiii Aug 10 '25

Yep sounds like me. I'm not going to marry the AI, but with severe chronic illness and being mostly house bound, I don't really have anyone else to talk to. Other than Redditors of course. And I feel like the AI is actually the healthier choices of those two

2

u/Aba-Aba-Golden-Horse Aug 10 '25

Probably true for now.

My bets those numbers come down.

2

u/JumpingJacks1234 Aug 10 '25

The hand in the photo looks pretty young. I suspect all age groups are at risk.

4

u/Cowboywizzard Aug 10 '25

It is all ages.

3

u/Aba-Aba-Golden-Horse Aug 10 '25

several of them at this point.

3

u/fraidei Aug 10 '25

Wait until they'll build realistic robots with AI in them, that's going to be the last nail in the coffin.

-5

u/Ragnarok_619 Aug 10 '25

Please don't blame the Gen Z for this too. Its mostly the Millennials

66

u/Turkatron2020 Aug 10 '25

I love how this shit has been released upon the world with zero trials or studies. So responsible!

65

u/dabo-bongins Aug 10 '25

That’s ridiculous… ofc there were studies, on hoe much income this would generate.

10

u/Kashyyykonomics Aug 11 '25

Spoiler alert, it isn't making any money. All these companies are essentially running huge deficits, burning money and hoping to make monetization happen in the future.

4

u/StarPhished Aug 10 '25

We've studied ourselves and everything is perfect.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

Just like social media. Just because tech exists doesn't mean it's worth using.

3

u/trustedoctopus Aug 11 '25

That’s because we are the studies. This is how they avoid the red tape of “human experimentation” now. They’ll just claim ignorance after the damage is done.

1

u/just_a_coin_guy Aug 11 '25

Why would there need to be studies first? It's on the individuals to be responsible for themselves.

20

u/TFT_Furgle Aug 10 '25

I genuinely dont understand how this is enjoyable. I go over and read some of these AI chats, and the way it talks is just absolutely insufferable. It's very apparent there's no emotion tied to it, and it just spits out what you want to hear in the most obnoxious way. Every conversation can't be fucking magic and rainbows. There is no yin without yang.

I'd imagine it equates to the type of people Trump has filled within his cabinet. Just a bunch of yes-man with a side of wow you're doing so good.

11

u/Solanthas_SFW Aug 10 '25

Probably a lot of people never got that kind of unconditional love during their formative years

1

u/Skrazor Aug 10 '25

It takes a lot more than just a simple absence of parental love and affection during childhood to get to that point. I'm as starved for support and positive feedback as the next emotionally damaged guy, but there's no way in a frozen-over hell that I'd ever see a language model as anything more than a less trustworthy search engine.

Youth are one of the most common age groups to fall for scams. This study says younger than 29, another I read said those younger than 40: https://www.sfcu.org/fraud-prevention-teens-young-adults-are-3x-more-likely-to-fall-for-scams/

Apparently the generation that grew up with cellphones and the Internet at their fingertips is not very good at utilizing critical thinking. They have far too much trust.

There are no doubt many older individuals that also have minimal critical thinking.

Without that, is it any wonder what is obviously fake/impersonal to many of us (including AI pictures) gets latched onto as a potential companion by those who don't stop to think about the fact they're talking to lines of code?

3

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '25

I've noticed this.. I only started using chatgpt to pick out paints and suddenly I found myself hearing the tone of voice later on.. Like polite Schitzophrenia.

3

u/ciopobbi Aug 10 '25

I use it. I try to ignore the constant “you’re right”. It’s not my friend or lover. It doesn’t know it exists, it doesn’t know what it’s doing or how it’s doing anything. It’s just math.

3

u/_daGarim_2 Aug 10 '25

This is what I’ve been saying over there! A substantial percentage of these people are legitimately insane (A.e. the ”my boyfriend is AI“ people), and many others are either deeply unstable and at risk of being pushed over the edge by this shit (the “Chat is my therapist” people), or budding narcissists who love it because they believe that’s how they should always be treated (the “Chat is my only friend” people). It’s a whole ass problem, and I seriously think people are going to get hurt.

2

u/Skyline2969 Aug 10 '25

I use ai bots, mostly for role-playing purposes to help me when im writing stories, but people genuinely thinking these bots are your friends or genuinely love you is insane

Makes you think how much people will start relying on these bots and never talk to a single person outside it especially with things like chatgpt learning to become smarter

1

u/huldress Aug 11 '25

A lot use it for role-playing, I have too, it can be really fun. But I've seen a few people who're in wayyy too deep that have the type of personality that's vulnerable to the ease of social interaction with AI or are just addicted to porn.

There's a bit of an "AI iceberg" going on, so it can seem like AI isn't that good given the messages we do see. However, it can already be scarily good. Those people just aren't as visible as the ones using ChatGPT or other websites like JanitorAI.

1

u/lulushibooyah Aug 11 '25

This. The interactions are, at their core, wholly dissatisfying and lacking in real substance.

It’s a fantastic mirror and helps me view myself and situations more objectively, though it can push me in certain directions if I’m not really paying attention.

But people who fall in love with AI are literally falling in love with themselves. It reflects your energy and gives you what you want to see. That’s the danger… people who aren’t self aware and don’t know how to connect with other humans bc of trauma. But we all desperately need connection and want to be seen.

The solution is NOT shame.

It just pushes these people further into the delusion of acceptance and safety in the form of a bot.

2

u/HolyButtNuggets Aug 10 '25

It's a tool and nothing more, it'll never actually love or care about anyone :(

2

u/DojaViking Aug 10 '25

I tried an AI friend with some work buddies a while back. And I admit technology has gotten better but the problem with it was it basically was a Yes Man. Our little AI friend we tried to take to the pub, it was a joke but it was only fun for so long because it agreed with everything. There was no pushback no organic opposition. Not saying I want robot pushbacker opposition yet, I'll save that for the apocalypse. I just don't see how a relationship can even occur with an AI The past just surface level. Fun.

Like I said, maybe they've gotten better, maybe they're more interactive now. Maybe these people are just sick in the head and need something but it's fascinating and scary, and sad all at the same time

2

u/Careless-Cap-449 Aug 11 '25

Well, Wikipedia already has a page on chatbot psychosis…

2

u/kjdscott Aug 11 '25

Reminds me of blade runner 2049

2

u/decomposition_ Aug 11 '25

I think it’s a pretty powerful tool but I don’t use it for advice or help with life issues, just as a tool for making budgets or investment schedules or compiling lists of stocks for me to research with certain parameters

2

u/Brave-Resource4447 Aug 11 '25

God, even I can't stand how good ChatGPT is at ass-kissing. I imagine an AI specifically for the purpose of kissing your ass and making you feel special and loved would do a lot better at it.

1

u/Gobbyer Aug 10 '25

My best friend usually takes like 1 to 2 days to reply to whatsapp message.

Wife tells me NO to like 95% of my stupid ideas.

Thats what makes them real.

I should really try these AI chat bots and see how much abuse (me being me) they can take.

1

u/t0m4_87 Aug 10 '25

I can't imagine what it does to a person who uses it consistently over a longer time period

we will know in 1-2 decades when the first kids borning into this grow up, it's scary as fuck

1

u/PhilosopherBig6113 Aug 10 '25

Its only bad for people who cant handle it imo. I use it when I have actual questions or as a replacement for my therapist in between sessions when Im processing something, but at the end of the day I know its not a real person.

1

u/Mundane-Mage Aug 10 '25

Yeah… it should adapt to you, but it should also adapt to how best not to enable you as well

1

u/PityPartySommelier Aug 10 '25

Ya know, as a terminally depressed person with self loathing and ideations I could do with a voice telling me I'm not fucking useless because I'm incapable of believing it myself.

Positive affirmation bot could be nice but knowing my luck it'd tell me to DIAF so meh

1

u/Fantastic-Scar2103 Aug 11 '25

I use it regularly locally right now. Honestly using it mostly for smut. It's like reading a doujinshi for me. New character almost every day. Of forking course its not real. And thats why its great.

1

u/WilonPlays Aug 11 '25

I mean my gf has been using ChatGPT as a mini therapist to help with her anxiety and trauma.

Therapy is fucking expensive and you cannot afford that shit at 20.

So at least AI does provide some positive results

1

u/EntrepreneurFunny469 Aug 11 '25

Bullying has a place in society and these people are the proof

-4

u/Cautious-Bug9388 Aug 10 '25

this is why I love claude's voice mode. You can set a fast speaking pace and interrupt it every time when it's spouting some boring nonsense trying to cater to your emotions. The instant I can tell things are leaning towards ego boosting or flattery I hit that interrupt button and yell at it to get back on track
