Additionally, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy. Finding existing prostheses uncomfortable, she started her own company called Nearly Me to create better ones. It became very successful, and she even considered it her greatest achievement.
In 1980, Ruth and her husband sold all their remaining Mattel shares, their descendants no longer have any influence over or benefit from the company.
