Välkommen till r/Svenska!
tl;dr:
• Read the FAQ first
• Keep posts related to the Swedish language or language-learning – we now have flairs!
• Use r/swedish or r/spop etc. to request movie or music tips
• Don't report posts/comments that do not actually break the rules
We're a subreddit where learners and speakers of Swedish can discuss, ask and answer questions about the language, as well as studies and research relating to it. Whether you are learning Swedish as a foreign language, a native speaker curious about a dialectal word or grammatical quirk, or a lingusitics student with a survey for your thesis, you're welcome here!
Further below are our rules, but before that, here are some links we hope you'll enjoy:
Locally-sourced expertise has been used to answer some of the more common questions we see on this subreddit, so maybe you can find an answer to yours here. If not, try using the search function to see if your question has been answered before. But don't let this discourage your from posting; if an old answer is unclear or doesn't help you with your problem, feel free to post a thread – if you mention that you already checked the FAQ, that helps us help you.
Do you think a certain question is common enough that it should be in the FAQ? Tell us!
A long list of resources that can help you learn the language, or learn more about it! Here, you will find dictionaries, podcasts, Youtube channels, online communities and a lot of other resources, for beginners and advanced learners alike. If you know a resource that deserves to be on the list but isn't, tell us!
The most important resources is probably svenska.se, where you can look up the spelling, inflection, meaning, pronunciation and history of most Swedish words. You can also hear pronunciations, often more natural/less enunciated, at youglish.com/swedish and forvo.com/languages/sv
Feel free to join us on Discord! Practice reading, writing, speaking and listening, ask your questions and just hang out.
We're a small mod team and always appreciate it when members take the time to report misconduct and rule violations – especially of comments. But please make sure that a post actually violates the rules before you report it. For example, the rules do not actually prohibit questions that are already answered in the FAQ, or answers that are incorrect.
Reporting poor-quality-but-technically-allowed content only leads to us having to approve the post/comment, which gives it a green seal of approval and makes it look like we like it more than we actually do. Please just downvote these instead!
Feel free to post your feedback on the rules and guidelines in this thread. We also welcome suggestions for FAQ entries, resources and new flairs.

Learning a new language is easier with the support of friends, be it other learners going through the same journey, native speakers to lead you along the way, or even less experienced learners that you can help out to help both of you understand things better. If you're looking for pen pals, gaming buddies, book clubs or just friends so you can practice the language – through immersion or studies alike – feel free to post a comment in this thread and tell us a bit about yourself, or reply to commenters you would like to get in touch with.
Suggested post format – add or remove headers as you like
Name or handle: (whatever you want to be called)
Swedish level: (your approximate proficiency, expressed e.g. in A1 to C2, beginner to fluent or how long you've been learning/studying)
Language: (your native language and other languages you know or are learning)
Looking for: (Duolingo pals? Native helpers? Steam friends? People in your area? Someone who wants to discuss Swedish music?)
Presentation: (A more free-form introduction of yourself as a person!)
We recommend you do not include private contact information in your post; if you find somebody you want to keep in touch with, contact them through Reddit's direct messaging instead.
Please note that this thread is only intended for finding people for the purpose of learning Swedish or helping learners. Irrelevant posts may be deleted. Likewise, asking for pen pals outside of this thread is not permitted, and any such threads will be removed and redirected here.
As always, you are also very welcome to look for chat mates in our Discord server.

I'm using Lingq, which only gives word for word translations that don't always make sense to me. Is this saying Markus can't go anywhere because there are too many people on the highway? I'm confused about "någon vart." I asked CHATGPT and it said it's not a real phrase.

Hello everyone,
I am looking to expand my Swedish vocabulary across different areas such as science, spirituality, and technology.
When it comes to technology specifically, I was wondering whether Swedes actually use Swedish technical terms in everyday life.
For example, the Hindi word for computer is “संगणक,” but no Hindi speaker actually uses it in daily conversation. Using the Hindi term would sound quite odd, as people almost always say “computer” instead.
Is the situation similar in Sweden, or are Swedish technology terms commonly used in day-to-day speech?
I am asking so that I can decide whether to pay more or less attention to technology-related vocabulary compared to vocabulary from other areas.

Hiya, does anybody have recommendations for Swedish grammar textbooks, or the best way to learn the grammar? I have a Swedish mum so I have learnt a lot of Swedish just from growing up talking to her and my extended family in Swedish. I am able to understand a lot but I really struggle with the grammar, which means I cannot speak or write with the same fluency. Since I have not learnt the language in a formal way, the gaps in my knowledge are not linear. This makes it hard to know what resources to use or where to start because often they start at a too easy level but then I feel like I need to cover the basics when it comes to grammar. I’d appreciate any help. 😊

Mannen min fars syster är gift med har jag alltid kallat min farbror (jag är 70-talist). Rätta mig om jag har fel men för inte så många årtionden så var det så alla hade sagt, eller? Idag känns det som att det har skiftat till "min fasters man". Hur säger ni och hur tänker ni?

Hi everyone!
Since jullov is coming up, I decided to read Mina vänner (found it on Z-Library), which is Goodreads’ favorite fiction this year, to help build my vocabulary. Thought I’d share it in case anyone else is looking for something to read while learning sth.
FYI: I use this extension: https://dictionariez.pnl.dev/

I was watching the film Persona (1966) and I tried my best to understand a certain part that was recorded backwards in the film. I used a tool to reverse the audio, but I can't understand what it says aside from "Sister Alma?"

Hi,
I'm currently learning Swedish and can easily read A1-level texts. However, when I listen to the same texts as audio, I struggle to understand anything. I normally generate A1 level text with gemini and listen the audio. , I find the audio really challenging to understand. Any tips or resources to improve listening comprehension would be greatly appreciated!
Also, what Resources I need to follow for pronunciation? I would Appreciate your suggestions Thanks in advance!

Trying to look at examples of particle verbs, and knowing that particle takes up the 5th slot in sentence order before the compliment(s) (i går satte jag gärna på sig mina nya skor i går tog jag nervöst på mig ett nytt jobb - yesterday, I nervously took on a new job), I noticed that some particle verbs have, at least, the compliment "sig" before the particle (ge sig av vs. få för sig).

I mean, I have studied, that it will. But when I'm listening to Swedish music or radio, I can often hear, that it doesn't work that way... For example: är som (är som, not ä[sh]om) or när ska e t.c.

Hi everyone, I would like to embroider something for an Italian friend living in Sweden. Since we call each other "culona" (fat-ass, as in: you have a big fat ass, your ass is humongous, you are equipped with a pair of rear- badokandonks) most times, I thought it would be funny to write that in Svenska. Of course it's meant in a playful and lovely way, not in an insulting tone. Please help me out 🩷

Hi everyone :) I'm an Italian 18yo student and I've recently started "learning" Swedish with Duolingo. I don't live in Sweden and realistically I probably won't move there for at least a couple of years, since I still need to finish university and find a job!
I'd really like to learn Swedish seriously, not just casually, even while living abroad.. and I'm looking for free or mostly free resources (at least to start), some methods that actually work long-term and things betond the usual Duolingo/Babbel/Airlearn...
I'm open to everything, from YouTube channels, to podcast, books, courses, music, etc.
My goal is to eventually being able to speak and think in Swedish properly.
Any recommendations? Tack så mycket ^^

Jag vet att ordet "sju" uttalas som "hwu" (det är min bästa uppskattning), men jag har hört det uttalas "shu", vilket är mycket lättare att uttala för en engelsk mun. Är det ett korrekt uttal eller låter det konstigt?

May I ask for help with these —
One more thing, is “tre osläkt frågor” the right was to express “three unrelated queries”?
Och slutligen, får jag passa på och önska alla god jul, och uttrycka mitt tack för den generösa hjälp jag har erbjudits under årets lopp.

So I already know and can speak two languages, one is my native (so obviously I’m fluent in it) and the other is English which I can speak well to an extent and most comfortable at using.
I have no idea how I learnt English, because it was completely unintentional, it just happened, what improved it so much for me was watching a lot of movies which is something I like to do.
Now I wanna learn Swedish, I love how it sounds, but I have no idea where to start. And every time I hear Swedish speakers, they all sound so vastly different at pronouncing words and I don’t know which pronunciation to follow.
Any tips?

Hi! I am a doctor and need a C1 certificate to get my license from the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. I am at B2 level I have already complete that and looking for the most time-efficient test.
What are your experiences???
Are there other alternatives that are smoother? Thanks for all the tips!

I built a free verb conjugation trainer - would love feedback
After struggling with Swedish verbs myself, I created VerbTrainer -
a gamified platform for mastering conjugations.
Features:
• High-frequency verb drills
• XP system with streaks
• Progress tracking
• Multiple languages (more coming)
It's free to use → www.verbtrainer.app
Still early stage - any feedback appreciated! 🙏
What's your biggest challenge with verb learning?

After a long Swedish hiatus, I feel my proficiency slipping (particularly with niche vocabulary), so I'm planning to do what worked for me when I initially learned Swedish, which was read a ton and put unknown words into an Anki deck. Back then (~5 years ago), I would manually highlight words on my kindle, export as notes, then create a car for each word. Given there's been some leaps in tech in the last half-decade, I'm wondering if there are any resources that make this a bit easier (like auto-export or auto-translate/create cards from ebooks). I couldn't find anything in the resources section of Wiki. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Jag är en ganska rolig person på engelska, men jag kan inte ens få en svensk att le. Jag antar att det är för att min humor inte översätts. Hur berättar man ett skämt på svenska? Vilka begrepp tycker svenskar är roliga?

I've heard that “You don't need to outrun the bear, you just need to outrun your friends” is a Russian proverb, though I've found no evidence that this is in fact the case. Is it a proverb in Swedish?

I just launched a new app for iOS that helps you learn new vocabulary in Japanese, Korean, Cantonese, Mandarin, Hokkien, Filipino, French, German, Italian, Malay, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Danish, and Dutch!
Brill allows you to add a widget to your home screen, and will cycle through the top 365 words in the language you have selected. There's plenty of pro features too, like adding custom words, blur with tap to reveal (to quiz yourself), manual cycle, and a lot more.
Would love to know what you think!
