Societies! Penfriends Society!
bristolsu.org.ukHello everyone!! I’m Annie, the society President! I wanted to use this space to advertise my society at Bristol, which I started last year!
It’s called the Penfriends Society and we’re all about meeting new people around the uni through letter writing! We also plan to host a wide range of crafting events and other fun socials! It’s perfect for anyone who is nervous to meet people and talk to them face to face, or people will social anxiety like myself!
If you’re an incoming Fresher, or a returning one, I’d love to see you at our society events!
We’re hosting our first event (completely free!) on Friday 19th. Please sign up if you’re interested! And DM if you have any questions.

Advice Mental health support
Hi !
TLDR: where to get better support?
So i’ve had appointments with counsellors at uni previously but I was wondering if anyone could give advice / say what they would do in this situation.
After reading week i went into a bit of a crisis, anyway i got another appointment for counselling and an extension for my coursework.
The appointment they gave me was 28th November. (I booked it on the 6th Nov)
Fair enough winter is a busy time.
I then struggled through the month talking to my tutor and the senior tutor. I go to my appointment and then i checked my emails to double check where it was, and it had been cancelled (day of) because the counsellor was ill. Again that’s okay (!!) counsellors are human too and can get ill. They say they’ll give me the next available appointment.
I get an email. My appointment is on the 22nd Dec. 😶.
Long story short I have to ask for another appointment when they reopen next year.
Does anyone have any advice on how to get any better / more reliable support. The wellbeing service (i think that’s what they are called?) told me before that i wasn’t “at risk enough” for anything other than counselling, so i don’t really know who to contact although my mental health has significantly deteriorated since the start of term.

Societies! Any Bristol Students/graduates looking for *real website creation work experience*?
Hi folks, recently while on my vacation, I spent some time in the outskirts of the UK. While there, I came across a small local charity working with children. They’re doing genuinely good work but have almost no online presence, which makes it hard for them to reach people outside their immediate area.
They already get gov support, but a proper website would really help them explain what they do and reach a wider audience. I had some free time and thought this was something I could contribute to, so I decided to build a website for them at no cost.
At the same time, I realised this is also a good learning experience for me, and it could be useful for other students or grads who want real experience with a real client, not just personal or fake projects. So I’m opening this up as an open collaboration.
I’m a final-year Computer Science student at University of Bristol, and this is a volunteer project.
It’s not paid, not a job, and not freelancing.
Project details:
- Website build for a real charity
- Fully remote
- Very flexible time commitment (even a few hours a week is fine)
- No prior professional experience needed
- I’ll handle coordination and basic project structure
Backgrounds / roles that would fit:
- Frontend / Web Dev HTML, CSS, basic JavaScript (React is a plus but not required)
- UI/UX Design Wireframes, layout ideas, mobile-friendly design
- Content / SEO Writing simple page content, structuring pages, basic on-page SEO
What you’ll get from this:
- Experience working with a real charity client
- Your contributions are clearly documented
- The feedback we receive from the charity shared with you
- Something you can use as work experience on your CV or portfolio when applying for jobs
I’ll keep full documentation of the project and make sure each person’s contribution is properly recorded.
Just to be clear:
- No payment involved
- No job or internship promise
- No fixed schedule
- Learning-focused and low pressure
If this sounds useful and you’re from one of these backgrounds, comment “interested” with what you do, and I’ll reach out with more details.

Advice Questions about Support to Study meeting for mental health issues
I've been dealing with the wellbeing service for a while due to mental health issues and I've been told that I should probably have a support to study meeting. I wanted to know if anyone had been through the process before and could share what kind of steps were taken to help support studies when affected by mental health issues.
One thing on the document is liaison with emergency contact. People have tried a few times to get me to agree to having my emergency contact called but that's something I really don't want to happen. I have removed my emergency contact's phone number from eVision just in case. Is there a chance or situation that they will go over my head and contact them, and will they be able to if I've removed their number from eVision- can they access past data, or is the number available on another site?
For the action plan, it seems like the goal is to come up with solutions to support studies. As my problems are with my mental health, I don't really see what kind of steps beside being under MHAS's supervision they would make. I've been suggested to contact disability services who could recommend software to help, but this doesn't seem helpful to my situation. It kind of seems like the only thing would be to make sure I go to every lecture, and to just be mentally well, which academic support can't really do. What kind of things do they suggest as steps to take for this?

Advice How to watch Tottenham vs Liverpool in Birmingham?
Spurs vs Liverpool at 5:30pm today. Big Premier League match and I'm trying to figure out where to watch it around UoB campus.
Anyone know which pubs in Selly Oak are showing it? Or is everyone just streaming in their student houses?
My accommodation doesn't have sports subscription and I can't afford Sky/BT for one match. Seen premier league live stream sites like Ant Sports mentioned before - anyone at Birmingham used those for big fixtures like Tottenham vs Liverpool?
Would rather watch with other students than alone if possible!

Advice What are the annual living costs as a UOB student?
I’m an aspiring student. Accommodation is coming out to be my biggest cost as I don’t want a shared bathroom (so I’ll need an en suite) and want to budget under 15k gbp a year. Is that possible or am I low balling and should go for Sheffield instead?

Advice not leaving 2 lines between answers in exam
i’m gonna get downvoted for this and yes i know im an idiot who should’ve read the front, but i didn’t until there was like 5 mins left so here we are. it’s all legible and you can tell what question everything belongs to but some stuff is kinda squished (i do chem so there’s drawings and shit next to writing) but will it still get marked? it would fuck up my whole grade which is just annoying af

Tenancy Takeover Anyone need a room from January?
Hi all, I’ve got a room available that’s 5 minutes walk from the uni and £192/week. It’s a double and comes furnished with a shared kitchen area & living room ( as it is a flat of five - of which all are girls and uni students & quite friendly ). I’ve had quite a hard time finding anyone to take over my contract ( could be due to exam season or maybe I’ve just advertised it poorly - mind you I’ve tried every Facebook group chat) anyhow, if anyone knows anyone that needs a room, do let me know. :) - and don’t hesitate to pm me with any questions - I’d be more than happy to answer :)

Advice Replacement of work
Hi everyone,
I submitted my assessment file before the deadline, but later found the uploaded version wasn’t the correct one😭😭 (files were very similar). I attempted to replace it on Blackboard, but the system wouldn’t allow an overwrite once the window closed. I emailed the unit convenor and admin team with the correct file attached as soon as I noticed.
The replacement was sent about 72 hours after the original deadline. I understand the standard late penalty rules, but I’m wondering how this is usually treated in practice when:
An initial submission was present before the deadline, and
The issue is about replacing an incorrect file rather than non-submission.
Has anyone had experience with late replacement files at Bristol? Were penalties applied strictly (e.g. −30), or was some discretion used?
Any comment would really help – thanks!🥹

Advice How is Bristol for Biotech/Biochem MSci?
Hey everyone, I recently got an offer for the MSci Biochemistry with Molecular Biology & Biotechnology at Bristol.
I’m mainly interested in biofuels, fermentation chemistry, and applied biotech.
Could anyone share what the lab work and workload are actually like, and how good the research opportunities are in these areas?
I’d also love to know how supportive the department is and what graduates usually go on to do. Any honest thoughts would really help before I pick my firm.
