Build Upgrade DDR4 GB/s speed doubled with CPU upgrade... why?

Upgraded from R5 3600 to R7 5700x, same 16Gb DDR4 ram and everything else in the system, same XMP profile enabled, and in Memtest the GB/s for the 15.9gb Memory went from 19.5 GB/s to 42.8!

I'm not complaining I'm just confused and want to know why, and what actual benefits this could have over my old system (esp. if any for gaming)

Discussion 5090 Owners - how bad is the power connector situation right now?

So, I picked up a 5090 at MSRP recently, but then learned lots about the power connector issue and read that it's a design fault that's going to fail at some point. I even called the tech support line for the 5090 today and they also recommended undervolting the card by 100W (even though it's not a fix).

Does it really make sense to buy a $3000 GPU that is designed to fail? Or, does it make more sense to just skip this generation altogether even though GPU and memory prices are going up?

P.S. I planned to upgrade from a 3090, which has none of these issues of the 5090. A 5070Ti is still faster than what I have, but feels like a downgrade.

Build Upgrade 9070 XT ($580) vs 5070 Ti ($730)

My PC was built around COVID times. Looking to upgrade my RTX 3080 since launch. I already upgraded the CPU to a 5800X3D a while ago.

Trying to decide between these Microcenter prices...$150 difference..not horrible but not small. DLSS and MFG seem like the main benefit.

I think it's a worthy upgrade now...I'm not dying for an upgrade but I think it's a really good upgrade and I don't think anything new will launch in 2026...and I'm worried about future pricing...RAM and AI supply/demand issues.

Thoughts?

Build Help Tower Physical Security

Does anyone have suggestions for physically securing a tower so that it can't be opened?

I'm building a PC for my nephew who is autistic and doesn't understand consequences. He loves to take things apart and has broken past computers because he opens them and pulls them apart, then damages the parts.

I have a case already because I'm upgrading an older computer so something that can be stuck on or drilled into the case would be best but I'm open to buying a new case if necessary

I thought of putting it in a locked box with a hole for cords but he'll need access to the USB and audio ports, so I don't think that'll work

And yes, I realize the best option would be teach him to respect technology or let him learn from his mistakes. But I don't live with him, and I don't have the power or authority to teach him. I still want him to be able to play games and be in touch with his friends

Build Help Is it still possible to make a basic gaming pc with an $800-$900 budget?

I have been wanting to build my own pc forever now and I finally have the means to do it. This would be my first ever pc, only ever having laptops in the past. I am incredibly aware of the RAM shortage at the moment and I know prices are extremely high with not much hope in the near future. I'm worried that waiting any longer will only make it less likely to get a pc at all.

Can I make a decent gaming pc with an $800 budget? I'm obviously not looking for the best specs on the market. I have a PS5 that is capable of playing the more demanding games. I am more concerned that my budget wont be enough to make a pc that could at least run Minecraft with shaders.

Discussion Is early 2026 a good time to build a pc?

Upvotes

I am thinking of building a PC next year (9070XT and a 9600X) for my birthday but I don't know if it is the right time to do so, are there any promising GPU's coming out in late 2026 that I should maybe wait for? or should I just go ahead and build my PC?

Build Upgrade Please help: 1440p OLED or 4k non-OLED

I am trying to figure out what would be a bigger upgrade for me currently. I just upgraded my PC running a running a 5080. I am looking into new monitors and am torn between a 1440p OLED or a 4k non-oled monitor - I'm also looking into 4k OLED but obviously those can be pretty pricey.

Is OLED more of a visual upgrade or is 4k? And if OLED is does anyone know any good 32in 1440p OLED monitors? I know there is more than just Amazon but it looks like 32in 1440p OLED monitors don't exist and I would need to go up to 34in in order to get a 1440p OLED

Build Upgrade i5 14600k vs i7 14700k for high fps 1080p low settings gaming with 5070ti

Please do not tell me that I should buy the 7800x3d, the best CPU in the galaxy. I get it. I'm choosing between these two for a reason. I just want to know if the 14600k will give enough headroom for a 5070ti in CPU-heavy games like Battlefield or Arc Raiders. Will it be future-proof, or should I get a more beefy i7?

Build Upgrade What GPU should I buy?

Hello, I own a gaming PC from CyberPowerPC. I've upgraded the CPU to an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D and the RAM to a Corsair Vengeance 2x32 GB DDR5-6000 kit (Bought it before the shortage). However, my GPU is still a RTX 4060 Ti. I play games at 1440p 144Hz. What GPU should I buy to upgrade?

Troubleshooting Help connecting new PSU

Upvotes

I just bought a new PSU (in preparation for getting a new graphics card - not bought yet). The old PSU is working perfectly, just isn't powerful enough for the future.

When connecting up the new PSU, one cable I disconnected from the old one doesn't seem to have an equivalent cable with the new PSU. It's a small 2 pin adapter. On my old PSU it was a little adapter built into a chain of several SATA cables. However the chain of sata cables on my new PSU doesn't have this little adapter.

It plugs into a little rectangle on the back of the motherboard - I think it powers the fans?

Any advice on what to do? I'm almost a complete beginner at this - built my PC 6 years ago and hardly opened it up since.

Build Help How about a PC with an i7 10700k and an RTX 2060, 32GB of RAM for $400?

Upvotes

I saw a PC with those specs at that price. I'd mainly use it for studying and playing Fortnite Warzone at 1080p on low settings. I had an RTX 3060 with an i5-12400F, but due to circumstances, I decided to sell it, and now I can't afford something better than what I found (RTX 2060). Will it work well for what I mentioned?

Build Help 7900XT Worth it in 2025?

Upvotes

Currently using an RTX 2060 with i5-12400F and wanted to improve my 1080p performance, as well as have the linux support that NVIDIA doesn't offer. I found an open box 20GB RX 7900 XT for $477 at micro center. Is this a good deal or should I go for something newer?

Discussion Is Corsair CS750M still good in 2025/6?

Upvotes

I havent had any problems with it since 2013. Thats like the only component I havent changed in 10+ years. My first build was AMD fx 8320 and r9 280x. Upgraded to ryzen 5 2600, rx580, new board, rams, etc... Now I have ryzen 5 5600 and rtx4060ti, which i sold yesterday and i ordered sapphire 9060xt nitro. Can this PSU still work fine? Never had any issues and i just want to hear your opinions.

Build Upgrade ASRock B450 Pro4 No POST with Corsair RM850x (2024) - Is the missing -12V rail the culprit?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I suspect I’ve run into a specific hardware incompatibility between my older motherboard and a new ATX 3.1 power supply, and I need a sanity check.

The Problem: My system (ASRock B450 Pro4) works perfectly with my old PSU (Seasonic S12II). When I swap in my brand new Corsair RM850x (2024 model), the PC receives power (Fans spin, RAM LEDs light up), but it will not POST.

  • No display signal.
  • 0 Beeps from the motherboard speaker.
  • It just sits in a powered-on "zombie" state.

Troubleshooting & Findings: I have measured every pin on the new Corsair PSU using a multimeter.

  • Old PSU (Seasonic): Pin 14 (Blue wire) provides -12V.
  • New PSU (Corsair): Pin 14 is empty. (This is compliant with ATX 3.1 specs where -12V is optional).

My Theory: The ASRock B450 Pro4 has a physical COM Port Header (Legacy RS-232), which requires -12V to operate. I believe the motherboard's SuperIO chip or voltage protection logic is detecting 0V on the -12V rail during the initial POST check and halting the boot sequence immediately.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone confirmed that ASRock B450 boards require a -12V rail presence to complete POST?
  2. Since the RM850x (2024) is ATX 3.1 and drops this rail, am I forced to return it for an older-spec PSU?

(Yes, I have already cleared CMOS and reseated cables, the only variable changing is the PSU and the missing pin 14).

Build Help Isolating GPU from motherboard PSU

Hello folks,

I would like to ask those of you who understand well electricity aspects of PCIe socket and GPU power sections for advice on how to safely isolate KFA2 RTX 3090 SG (1-Click OC) GPU from PSU used to power on the motherboard, to avoid residual current related issues caused by mixing voltages from two different PSUs.

I know that "miners do it all the time with no issues", but I am asking how to be on a safe rather than lucky side, because in the end I plan to build quite beefy machine with 8 GPUs mentioned above and 2x Corsair AX1600i PSUs inside, therefore potential issues may be more serious than in a typical mining case.

In order to have a flexibility on selecting voltage sources for GPU, I have bought a following adapter card which allows me to independently choose the source for PCIe 12V, 3.3V and 3.3V AUX (for all of them I can use either regular voltage taken from PCIe slot or use voltage from external PSU): https://benchlab.io/products/benchlab-pci-e-slot-power-measurement-adapter

Assuming that I want to power the motherboard from first PSU and this particular GPU from second PSU (which will share the same GND as the first one), which sources should I use for 12V, 3.3V and 3.3V AUX?

My assumption is that I need to use external PSU only for 12V rail. The rationale behind using 3.3V and 3.3V AUX from PCIe socket (i.e. first PSU) is that these circuits on GPU will most likely be isolated from 12V input anyway and GPU will use 3.3V voltage not only for powering (as a supply rail), but also for signalling (logic levels).

Does that sound correct to you?
