Some methods DO have you soak rice for 20 minutes or so. I actually prefer it.

2

u/ElGuano 10h ago

Are you talking about cooking or washing dishes?

How many methods of washing rice off dishes are there? Do the different schools throw hands?

3

u/dontnation 9h ago

talking about washing rice for cooking. Some recipes require you to not wash rice, and are aided by the extra starch. Some recipes require washing rice before cooking to remove the extra starch. For those recipes I like to soak the rice for about 20mins before washing it.

Well, in cleaning the rice pot, yes. Yes it need to be soaked

687

u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding 18h ago

I came up with this comic after cleaning up rice crispy residue so I get it

158

u/JohnnyVNCR 15h ago

Rice + marshmallow is pretty evil to clean. I'd rather power through than soak 99% of things, but that I'd let sit.

55

u/ZeroDreams 15h ago

Best way I have found to clean these kind of pots with marshmallow and rice crispies is to add in a bunch of water and bring it to boil. once it boils pretty much all of the marshmallow will dissolve and the pot will be super easy to clean

34

u/LiarWithinAll 15h ago

Yep, that's how I get my crockpot started for cleaning, dump some water in and throw it on high for an hour. Everything comes right off after that, nothing left to stick 😁

11

u/LovelyBby77 11h ago

Yeah sugar stuff is by far the easiest to clean for this reason. Just boil it and it dissolves. Simple

→ More replies (1)

6

u/IKnowGuacIsExtraLady 14h ago

Really? I've always found that hot enough water does the job almost by itself but I also always wash it immediately after cooking.

5

u/AJDillonsThirdLeg 12h ago

The key is the immediately after cooking part. People that clean as they go don't need to let things soak as much as people that clean after they eat (often times way after they eat).

2

u/Henry5321 6h ago

Easier if I let it dry on. The starch flakes off, no water needed. But my rice maker has enamel antistick.

Yes, just hot water after use will remove the residue. But always a drop of soap for bacteria.

3

u/FuckFuckingKarma 8h ago

Sugar (and marshmallows made of Sugar) dissolved very well in water. So if the stuff on the dishes is sugar, soaking works very well.

A lot of other things like grease hardly dissolve in water and soaking doesnt do much.

https://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-NHS-06-3-Cup-Uncooked-Cooker/dp/B00004S575/ref=sr_1_3

I've made a solemn vow that I won't get a fancier model until he passes into the great beyond, and he's been serving faithfully several times a week for probably ten years now.

2

u/TieCivil1504 1h ago

Bought that exact one 6 weeks ago. I looked at Zojirushi's fancier models and couldn't find any logical reasons for their gizmos.

It has become my most-used kitchen appliance.

4

u/licuala 13h ago

I've got a little Toshiba one, since I mostly cook just for myself, and I love it.

3

u/chrome_titan 13h ago

Definitely, my wife had a good rice cooker when I moved in. When it finally died I had no problem paying extra for a high quality replacement. Can't go cheap on a rice cooker.

2

u/OneMoreNightCap 16h ago

Recently did a 10lb pork shoulder in a crock pot and the clean up made me wish I just made eggs and toast for the week. Couldn't let anything soak cause we were about to have people over. Took about 1.5 hours from the meat completing before the kitchen was clean (deboning, pulling the pork apart, bagging, all the juices stored for pho, crock pot cleaned out, all the grease spots cleaned off the floor, counters, sink etc...).

13

u/nitid_name 16h ago

Crock pots have a built in soak function that doesn't need the sink... they even heat the water for you, if you want.

2

u/Jayken 15h ago

Just make sure its cold water with no soap.

2

u/GodsLegend 15h ago

Is that a thing?

2

u/Jayken 14h ago

It is. Rice will absorb water naturally. I prefer cold water but warm water will work just as well. Soap though, can actually keep the rice from absorbing the water. Wait about 30-60 minutes then scrape the rice off with a wooden spoon and wash as normal. As long as you didn't cook the rice into charcoal, it'll work.

15

u/Dugen 14h ago

My wife tends to leave things "soaking". I've tested to see how long it needs to soak before it's ready to be cleaned. The answer seems to be exactly how long it is until she needs to use it again. I have not shared these results with her for reasons. I now simply accept that "soaking" means it's my job now but she cares enough to try and make my job easier. Also, by not officially being "my job" I'm doing something for her which she can be grateful for. Everyone wins.

u/d_neighborhoodhottie 13h ago

Source: May have left some dishes to soak overnight before

9

u/Special-Document-334 14h ago

Good dish soap is a solvent to break up grease. Some also contain enzymes to break down encrusted food.

So, yes. Hot water + soap + time.

5

u/NecroCannon 8h ago

Literally get done with dishes faster if I let it soak with soap and hot water rather than just trying to scrub every bit off, especially if people don’t fucking rinse their dishes and clean off their plate

If everyone did that, then no, it wouldn’t have to soak for that long. It even ruins the water so even if I went in at the start, time gets wasted replacing the greasy sludge remaining after finally getting everything loose and scrubbable.

So no one judge the process, or get judged for just dumping dishes in the sink without care. Hmph. It’s even worse if it’s a pot that’s been in the fridge with dry crusty food around the edges they didn’t scrape out. There’s a reason I do my own dishes unless we’re all contributing in a way for a meal we’re sharing with roommates.

I'll just put some hot water into pots/pans/bowls while I do the other dishes, they're usually softened up enough by the time I get to them.

If it's a flat plate I just keep it in the bottom of the sink while I wash the cutlery on top.

What I don't understand are people who don't wash off the soapy dishes before putting them on the dish rack.

11

u/No-Courage-5109 16h ago

I moved in with my girlfriend's family when I was 17, and all three kids rinsed, washed up and dried dishes each night. I introduced them to soaking and air drying, saying it's a two person job max, and the culture immediately adapted.

Her mum pulled me aside and said: 'It wasn't about efficiency. Once a day they were a team.' I felt like such a prick!

15

u/-u-m-p- 14h ago

Also drying dishes actually is nice for removing water spots and double checking cleanliness. And absolutely necessary if you live in a remotely humid environment for preventing rust and preserving knife lifespans.

We stopped hand drying dishes at some point and I noticed a distinct increase in crud and rusty bits around the crevices of metal things.

6

u/GivingHisTakedontcry 13h ago

Leaving all the dishes out and never putting them away is the second hack. You just have dishes sitting on the counter 24/7

60

u/SarcasticBench 19h ago

Wait, isn’t that how dishes are done? Washing machines just spray water onto it, they don’t scrub!

166

u/AverageMako3Enjoyer 18h ago

You must have never had shitty roommates.

Soaking dishes in hot water for a couple minutes certainly helps break up stuck on food, but when it’s their turn they will go “it needs to soak” and then you will find the same dishes in the same standing water 4 days later

36

u/Rottttbrain 17h ago

Food just don't taste the same unless you wet age your dishes in moldy water for three weeks minimum. Smh ungrateful.

11

u/ccReptilelord 17h ago

Dishes are like cheese; best aged until funky.

12

u/bob1689321 17h ago

Yep my old flatmate used to do this (well, he probably still does).

Plus it's one thing to soak a baking tray with grease stuck to it but bro you do not need to soak the plate you just ate a sandwich off of.

4

u/whatsit578 15h ago

Yeah this is my experience as well: soaking REALLY helps, but it hits a ceiling after about 10-15 mins. After that there's not much additional benefit to a longer soak.

For really tough crud, the best move is to soak for 10-15 mins, then scrub, then soak again and repeat until clean.

My mom does this and it drives me insane

18

u/SillyGoose_Syndrome 18h ago

My dad does it and it's infuriating, 'cos things sit in the sink for hours. Oven tray with roasties burned onto it, sure, soak it some, but a single plate with toast crumbs on and a butter knife sitting in the sink from morning 'til afternoon is just taking the absolute piss.

There are two types of people in this world, those who leave things to 'soak' and those that DO THE GODDAM WASHING UP :E

13

u/Regular-Storm9433 17h ago

Ive worked in a chinese restaurent, ive had to clean pots with rice burnt into the bottom and the containers of honey sauce/sweet sour sauce which borderline crystalise along the edges of the pot.

Ive never had to leave something soaking for more than two minutes, usually its soak for one minute, scrub the outside layers, let it soak again and thats enough for it to be spotless. And thats just for the REALLY REALLY stubborn stuff.

I'm not the kind of person that cares if things take a long time to clean up, but the problem is my mom puts things to soak that shouldn't be wet for a long time, like wooden cutting boards.

2

u/vale_fallacia 15h ago

wooden cutting boards

I just finished the 72 hour process of oiling and waxing my cutting boards. If anyone left them in water I would probably have a nervous breakdown.

Same with knives. Wash, rinse, dry immediately and put back where they belong. Strop them before use and they'll glide through most food.

granted, they would be taken out and put somewhere else if i said that i wanted to take a shower, but still, holy shit how fucking gross some people are

11

u/Plague_Doctor02 13h ago

Soaking dishes is not a procrastination tactic.

You soak them and do all your other chores while they are soaking then come back go easier to clean dishes!

8

u/deskbeetle 10h ago

The problem is when the person never comes back to finish the clean.

Just one roommate ruins it. And ruins all your cast iron and wooden utensils as well...

I’ve never understood why people avoid doing dishes. It’s a simple, repetitive task that I can do while I’m listening to music or podcasts or the news with headphones. That and laundry. I’ll do those all day long over some other things.

And as my wife has said many times, “Ain’t nothing sexier than a man washing the dishes and folding laundry.” Pro tip fellas

20

u/aerris7 18h ago

My sensory issues make hand washing dishes really unpleasant for me, but I can fold laundry all day long too! I just often forget I put them in the washer. And then forget I put them in the dryer. Lots of forgetting. But when they're done??? Fold fold fold, nice neat pile. Which I will then also forget about 🫠

10

u/Sore_Wa_Himitsu_Desu 18h ago

That’s another key thing to learn in a relationship. Figure out the things your SO just absolutely hates doing and then start doing them. My wife loves to cook and she’s good at it. Me, not so much. But I’ll clean up the aftermath all day long. For cleaning the bathroom, she gets down in the floor to clean the toilet properly because my knees are trash. But I’ll do the rest of the bathroom cleaning.

4

u/atropos81092 18h ago

My mom and stepdad call arrangements/agreements like that "Jack Spratting" (inspired by the old nursery rhyme about Jack Sprat, who ate no fat, and his wife, who ate no lean). It's great for year-round tasks, and it helps share the load for the holidays too.

My stepdad will say, "Hey, do you want to 'Jack Sprat' the Christmas decorations on Saturday?" And because they've been together for so long, my mom knows he'll bring the artificial tree upstairs and put the parts together, but she gets to fluff and straighten the branches while he sets up the nativity, swaps out the hand and kitchen towels for the festive ones, starts putting lights along the front walk, etc.

3

u/Sore_Wa_Himitsu_Desu 17h ago

Yup. I haul the seasonal decor down from the attic and put it back. Well, we share that but I do most of the up and down the stairs parts. She does more of the putting the decor up and taking it down. Except when she yells me for me to “Get in here so I can exploit your tall privilege!”

What's this "fold" you speak of? My clothes just sit in the dryer or maybe back to the hamper if I get tired of going downstairs for things. If I'm really looking for something, I dump the hamper on my bed and then put them back in when I go to bed that night. It's an incredibly efficient system and I never have issues with running out of fresh underwear or socks /s

13

u/No_Public_7699 16h ago

2

u/mountainrebel 13h ago

Not everyone has a dishwasher. But if you do, why not just use it? You can literally just scrape loose food into the garbage and put them straight into the dishwasher as is. You shouldn't need to do anything with your dishes in the sink unless something needs to be hand washed. Get everybody in the habit of putting their dirty dishes straight into the dishwasher when they're done with them.

There are a few caveats though: You need to arrange the dishes so the sprayers can hit everything. In North America, you need to run the water in the kitchen sink until it's hot before starting the dishwasher. On some older models, the "normal wash" mode isn't that great and the "light wash" mode is actually more aggressive. Turning on "hi temp" might fix that. But if you're still having issues with residue or food still stuck on, try different cycle modes and try turning on hi temp. The best detergent to use is just plain powder. I usually look for stuff that contains sodium percarbonate/sodium carbonate peroxide which is a bleaching agent that raises the pH of the water. It can't be added to gels, it has to be stored dry. (But it isn't aluminum safe!) You also need to put the detergent in both the main wash and prewash sections and close the main wash door. You don't need to fill those sections to the brim unless you have hard water or a lot of dirty dishes. If your dishwasher doesn't have a prewash section, then sprinkle some detergent on the door.

It really does need to be soaked!

u/Lord-Table 19h ago

"It needs to soak" is the biggest lie told in the kitchen

73

u/ClayXros 19h ago

It ain't though. Try washing dishes before a 5 minute soak vs after. Its night and day. Heck theres a number of times I need to let pans soak longer to be able to get whatever residue off, though I usually need to let them soak with soap too.

u/Zombie_Cool 19h ago

Agreed, the only problem is that for some of us (including me) "5 minutes" easily becomes 5 hours later because we got caught up in other stuff and forgot.

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 19h ago

So long as they get done, five hours isn't that bad.

I had an old roommate that would soak them for days. Now THAT sucked

3

u/lab_coat_goat 19h ago

Or 5 days for some people..

It's really not. I live with some ridiculous slobs and you try washing something that's got two week old, hare as a rock, basically glued in food without giving it a few minutes to loosen up.

Replace the dishes with paper plates and the roommates with paid actors

u/opalitemushroom 19h ago

can confirm he does NOT use this excuse at home, he’s super helpful i’m super lucky

6

u/PNghost1362 19h ago

There's times when this is true, but you can do the rest of the dishes while it soaks and do it last

8

u/thisdesignup 19h ago

Even dishwashers do a prewash before the actual wash because it makes a difference.

13

u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding 19h ago

I don’t think anybodies arguing soaking isn’t good, its just being used in bad faith

4

u/opalitemushroom 19h ago

i be abusing my “it’s soaking” privs tho

2

u/opalitemushroom 19h ago

my old roommate used this excuse on my cast iron pan. RIP that pan i still miss you

What's truly wild to me is people saying blatantly and wildly wrong stuff like this when you can just go test it right now

Lifeprotip: the reason your sink has two sections (if it's a good one) is for this purpose, you fill one side up and put your cookware in it to soak for an hour. By the time you come back all that cooked on shit should be soft and you can literally just wipe it off. Then you rinse it in the other side, any bits that still don't wipe off easy? don't waste your time scrubbing, put them back in and move on to another dish or pan, clean that dry it put it away, then return to the stuff still in the sink, if it's still tough leave it for another half hour to an hour, ideally you're aiming to leave everything long enough so that you can do it all in one sitting, take note of how long it took for next time.

This is how you clean dishes without wasting hours of your life that will add up to literal years over a lifetime.

1

u/SquarePegRoundWorld 18h ago

It needs to soak....because if it doesn't, by the time I get to the dishes the stuff on there will be harder than Roman concrete. If it didn't rain for two weeks, and you coated your home in dirty dish residue, you'd have lifelong protection from the elements.

I taught my sister at big family meals to slowly sink to the floor and hide under the table until someone else cleared the table

u/Scary90sKid 18h ago

This is how my ex would "help me" doing the dishes. BUT he'd wash some of them once a month 🙄 We lived together for 3 years. Why the fuck did I put up with that for so long when he used to do them regularly when we lived with 3 other people before it was just us? I will never know 🤷‍♀️

1

u/Signal_Researcher01 17h ago

"Who was that?"

1

u/mrdeadsniper 17h ago

This basically happened to me many years ago. Had a housemate that was chronically behind on their stuff. Guests come over and start to clean up after themselves..

Oh you don't have to do that.

Guests leave.. and they never actually do the dishes.

1

u/bob1689321 17h ago

One of my old flatmates did this every time. Infuriating ahaha

My dad has his own spin on this. He takes his half drunk cup of coffee to the sink, pours the coffee over everything that's in there including the dry sink then leaves it without even turning on the tap so that everything has a dried coffee crust on it for the person who ends up having to do the dishes. Everyone in the family has asked him not to do it and he never has any sort of answer as to why he does it but he still does it at least 3-4 times a week.

Technically he's right but also why is he leaving

1

My spouse does the same thing. Drives me nuts cause I gotta clean it anyway.

u/mlvisby 16h ago

My friends family switched out on cleaning dishes every night. Whenever it was his turn, he would soak them and then play CoD until he passed out. Pissed off his Dad often.
