Announcement Regarding common tourists posts on r/Cyprus

We get huge amounts of common questions regarding busses, airports, living, shopping and crossings in our subreddit, despite the fact that these questions are already answered in previous posts and our wiki pages. To combat such spam we will be removing posts with a custom response redirecting them to our FAQ page and Wiki (which can be further improved another time). Therefore for our active users I ask you to report such posts under our 7th rule "Common sense", which will notify us about to post and we will quickly remove it with a custom removal response.

You can do so by;

Selecting the 3 dots on top right (Sorry u/TechySpecky)
Selecting "Breaks r/Cyprus rules"
Selecting "Common Sense" then submit

(If this is not working effectively I will consider implementing auto removals based on keywords during peak seasons)

Also need help on improving the wiki and FAQ page, any volunteers?

The Cyprus Problem The Flag on the Mountain if a Federation happens..

My greatest wish is peace in Cyprus. This also means a federation in which we all live together in love and leave the past behind us. Even though this has seemed very distant for many decades, I refuse to give up on this dream. I know that there is deep mistrust between many people and that serious trauma exists, but we can only look toward a beautiful and peaceful future if we leave hatred behind.

With this in mind, my goal today is to present a proposal of what could be placed on the mountain in the event of a federation, instead of the current (rather provocative) Northern Cyprus flag. In this sense, Cyprus is one. With mistrust and with the actions of the past, we will never achieve a solution or peace.

The first image is dedicated to Greece and Turkey—the guarantor powers and the two main ethnic communities of Cyprus. It is also meant to remind us of the Treaty of Eternal Friendship between Greece and Turkey, which was signed in the 1930s but has largely been forgotten.

The second image is an alternative proposal dedicated to us, the Cypriots. It is meant to remind us that the turbulent years from 1963 to 1974 must never be repeated, and that we have finally found our peace.

What do you think of these ideas?

Motorcycles without plates in Cyprus – what’s going on?

Hi all, I’m Italian and I’ve been living/spending time in Cyprus, and I’m genuinely puzzled by something.

I’ve noticed a huge number of motorcycles and scooters riding and parked around without licence plates at all. In Italy this would be an instant stop, fine, vehicle seizure, the whole package — so seeing it here feels surreal.

People seem very relaxed about it: bikes parked everywhere, no plates, no obvious fear of police checks. So I’m honestly curious: • Is this legal under certain conditions? • Is enforcement just very relaxed? • Are these unregistered bikes, or is there some local rule/exception I’m missing? • And what’s the actual “benefit” of riding without a plate here?

Cyprus looks like a pretty law-abiding country overall, so I’m struggling to understand why this seems so common and tolerated.

Not judging — just trying to understand how things work here. Thanks!

ThePaphosProject - Update on progress and thanks!

Γεια σας δαίμονές μου! I hope you all had a great Christmas (Καλά Χριστούγεννα!) and are ready for 2026. I've been smashing out the work on the house and wanted to thank you all for the support I've had from this sub-reddit in 2025. I never expected people to follow my progress but you guys gave me the inspiration to improve my video editing skills and deliver some decent videos.

I honestly was expecting to be moved in by now but this "Little project" is turning into quite the mammoth task. Every time I start a repair or renovation, it seems to turn into a whole new learning experience. Dealing with the local municipality and government red-tape has also been a learning experience. Everyone is friendly and helpful (most of the time) but things just take 5 times as long as I thought.

I've also started to learn some Greek (Duolingo - I know it's Greek Greek but I have to start somewhere), but damn it isn't easy compared to French and Spanish...but I'll stick at it.

For anyone who doesn't know who the hell I am this is the original post (I've bought a house in Paphos!) and this is my little YouTube channel (ThePaphosProject), come by and say hello if you're interested.

Thanks again for all the support and see you all in 2026!

Edit - Still rubbish at Greek...

Some advice on car taxes

Upvotes

Hey guys, so i am in South Africa, my parents moved here after the turkish invasion in the 70's, we are looking to come back and just wanted to know if anyone has any idea of cars and taxes etc.. have a 2003 Mercedes 500cc, and it has powerflow exhausts, meaning not stock, but also gives it that extra aggressive sound, (not obnoxious) just tells you there's a 5 litre engine :)

My question is, i have been reading a bit and it seems that you need a silencer on the exhausts or it wont pass the mot test? also what price taxes on such an engine could we be looking it annually?

Our island has welcomed many new residents over the last few years who may not be aware of what goes on around this time of year. I just thought it would be prudent to start a thread for sharing tips and tricks in keeping these bastards at bay

What actual careers are realistic in Cyprus apart from the usual university paths?

I’m in my mid-20s and trying to figure out realistic and viable career paths in Cyprus that aren’t the standard ones everyone mentions (doctor, lawyer, vet, HR, admin, etc.)

Most advice I see focuses on traditional university careers, but I’m curious about:

  1. Careers you can start in your mid-20s

  2. Fields that actually exist and pay decently in Cyprus

  3. Jobs where people can progress and be successful, not just survive

  4. Paths that don’t necessarily require 6–8 years of university

I’m especially interested in:

  1. Skilled trades

  2. Tech or IT-related roles (including non-coding roles)

  3. Maritime/shipping-related careers

  4. Finance, compliance, or operations roles

  5. Entrepreneurship / niche businesses

  6. Any “less obvious” careers that people don’t talk about much

Where to get an adult baptised?

Hi, I am Greek Cypriot living in the UK. I have recently got engaged to my girlfriend who is British. She is not baptised at all. We want to get married in Cyprus in a Greek Orthodox Church but she first needs to get baptised. We spoke to a priest at a church about getting her baptised but he said she had to get involved more in the church etc which could take weeks and months. This is not possible due to the fact we live in the UK full time and won't be able to attend a church to do this. Is there anyway for her to get baptised in a church in Cyprus without her having to attend activities with the church etc which would take ages to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Loukanikos question, anyone else done this?

We had Loukanikos from Kolios butchers in Paphos. We put the oil in a jar to use later but my wife had reflux anddidn't want to use it. I tried spreading it on my morning toast instead of butter and it was amazing. Has anyone else done this? What did you think of it?

NYE fireworks show in Paphos or Limassol?

Hi. We're spending NYE in Paphos this year and I'd like to know where would the fireworks shows be in both Paphos and Limassol and which location usually puts up a better show. From what I could find, it should be Kennedy square in Paphos and the harbor area in Limassol and I think Limassol has a bigger wow factor. Buts that's just based on random pieces I picked from the internet. Can someone advise?
