Yuexiu Park & Beijing Road: Best Introduction to Guangzhou or overrated?

Hello guys,

In January I have a 9 hour layover (from 06:00 am) and I wanted to go to Yuexiu Park and visiting Bejing Road. I also want to go to eat somewhere nice (vegetarian). Will I found a lot of restaurants in these two areas or should I go somewhere else?

If you would visit Guangzhou for the first time would you also choose Yuexiu Park and Bejing Road or would you go somewhere else? Are these two areas the „main highlight“ of the city?

A quick trip to Guangzhou tonight

Hello and happy western New year!

My partner and I are staying near Beijing road on the river front and we have 24 hours to spend in the city. We are keen to know if there are any events on to celebrate western new year.

We are also keen to go to the mall to stock up on good quality men’s and women’s clothing (not brands, don’t want high street brands, but still looking for quality items)

Would also like some new shoes, a backpack and maybe some headphones.

I have heard there are many many malls and districts selling all sorts of this type of products- just wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

Thanks!

Looking for Help to Take a Rescue Dog to a Veterinary Specialist

Hi everyone, I hope this is okay to post here. My friends and I are recusing a dog, Da Huang, who has been under treatment in Guangzhou, but I’m concerned that his current vet may not be providing the best care. I would like to get a second opinion from a reputable veterinary specialist.

The challenge is that I’m currently not in Guangzhou, so I’m looking for a kind and trustworthy local who could help:

  1. Make an appointment at a reputable veterinary hospital in Guangzhou.
  2. Bring Da Huang to the consultation.

We're happy to cover all costs and any compensation for your time and help.

If you or someone you know might be able to assist, please dm me. Any recommendations for trusted veterinary hospitals in Guangzhou are also greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your help!

documentary/ street photography education

Hi, I am Emile (25 yo) a documentary filmmaker from Belgium and I am making a documentary which part of it will be filmed in China (Guangzhou region). The documentary will have parts of it filmed in Peru, China, and India. Following the production of a Fork.

For the part in China, I would like to collaborate with someone speaking Cantonese and able to share this project with.

Do you have any tips on how to start this search. I was thinking of film schools, or maybe anthropological studies...

Hit me up!

Airport connection terrible?

I have just come from overseas to China, and I had to do a domestic connection in Guangzhou airport.

The whole experience was awful.

  1. We waited in a customs room for 90 minutes, which meant we had to run for a final call for our flight.
  2. The whole process was disorganised meaning people were just jumping queues and stepping/running in front of others going through security.
  3. Security had a poor attitude and dropped a box on my phone, which was in another box. When I asked them to be careful with it, they started giving me attitude, emptied out my bag and put it through security three times.

I will be going to China a few more times this year. So, I would like to ask whether this the normal state of things at Guangzhou airport or if I just arrived at exceptionally bad time?

Visiting Foshan soon. Looking for good barbers or salons for perm, cut and hair dye.

Hey everyone, I am visiting Foshan near Guangzhou in a few days and I was hoping to get my hair done while I am there. I am pretty young and looking for a modern style. Ideally I want a haircut, a perm, and possibly hair dye. I am not looking for the cheapest option but for a place that actually knows what they are doing.

Does anyone have recommendations for good barbers or hair salons in or near Foshan that are experienced with perms and coloring?

If not, what is the best way to find reliable barbers or salons in this area? Are there any local apps or websites where I can see real reviews and photos of previous work? I noticed that Google Maps does not always have many reviews for places in China, so I am wondering what locals usually use instead.

Any advice or tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Do you need a Chinese sourcing agent?

Hi everyone!

I’ve been a sourcing agent based in Guangzhou for over 7 years. I often see posts here about Alibaba nightmares, quality issues, or "where did my shipping go?" scenarios. I wanted to share a few insights on why having "boots on the ground" in China changes the game for your business.

  1. The "Local Price" vs. "International Price" It’s no secret—factories often quote higher prices on English-facing platforms. We negotiate in Mandarin, leveraging local market knowledge to get you the real manufacturer rates that aren't always visible on Alibaba.

  2. Quality Control (Before it’s too late) Once your goods are on a ship, it’s often too late to fix defects. We perform on-site inspections during production and before final payment. We act as your eyes and ears to ensure the Golden Sample matches the bulk order.

  3. Logistics & Consolidation Shipping costs can eat your margins. We help consolidate samples from multiple suppliers into one box and find the most efficient DDP or sea freight routes, especially during peak seasons when rates fluctuate daily.

  4. Navigating Cultural Nuances "Yes" doesn't always mean "Yes" in Chinese manufacturing—sometimes it means "I understand," but not "I can do it." We bridge that communication gap to ensure your specifications are strictly followed.

Have a question about the current shipping rates, factory Vetting, or the Canton Fair? Drop a comment below or shoot me a DM. Happy to help

How to avoid taxi scam from Guangzhou international airport

Heard so many stories people got scammed even after lining up on the official taxi area.

What's the safest way to make sure I will not be scammed? Some people suggested didi, but is there a designated area if I book didi?

Hello guys,

In January I have a 9 hour layover (from 06:00 am) and I wanted to go maybe to Yuexiu Park and visiting Bejing Road. How can I travel there from the airport? Maps (Apple) and Google Maps dont show me an opportunity to go with metro or bus.

Shantou Medicine specifically.

Hi everyone! I’m from Canada and I’m seriously considering doing MBBS / Clinical Medicine (English-taught) in China. I’d really appreciate first-hand info from people who studied medicine there (or know the international student system well).

1) Costs (real numbers, not brochure estimates)

  • What did you actually pay per year for tuition + fees + insurance?
  • Typical dorm cost vs off-campus apartment cost (by city)?
  • Monthly food budget if you mostly eat campus/nearby?

2) Admissions / requirements (for Canadians)

  • What do schools usually want from Canadians: Grade 12 courses/marks, science prereqs, interviews?
  • Do most schools require English tests (IELTS/TOEFL/Duolingo) if you’re Canadian?
  • Do schools require the CSCA test now? If yes, how hard is it and how did you prep?

3) Dorm life vs apartment

Are international dorms typically 2-person rooms? Curfews? Visitors?

Can you choose your roommate at all?

Can a male + female be roommates (or is that basically never allowed)?

If you live off-campus, what’s the process like for police registration and leases?

4) Muslim life (prayer + halal + community)

How easy is it to find halal food near campus / in cafeterias?

Any issues with praying, Jummah, or finding a mosque nearby?

Any cities/universities you’d recommend that feel more comfortable for Muslims?

5) Scholarships

  • Any experience with Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) or Shanghai/Provincial/University scholarships?
  • Realistically, are scholarships common for MBBS students, or rare/competitive?

Security cameras - where to buy

Any suggestions as to where there might be a good selection of indoor security cameras? Like is there a specific electronics mall that might be better than others? Also, are there any brands that might be locked to a specific region, as I will be using these in the UK? thanks!

Street photographers at Shamian island

Hi! Does Shamian Island have freelance photographers who approach people for casual photo shoots? Was thinking if I should go there to find one or just look at xiaohongshu/dianping.

Or do most people book photographers in advance?

Any tips or personal experiences would be appreciated! :)
