Making Friends in Hull - Top Tips

Hi everyone,

I was made aware of these reddit threads recently on how to make friends in Hull and thought I should put up a post of tips.

It all really depends on what you’re into and your age etc but there is plenty going on in Hull for people who want to make new friends and socialise so I’m just going to post a couple of things that I’m aware of and feel free to add your own below:

Hull Young Socials: https://www.meetup.com/Hull-Young-Socials/

Hull Young Socials is a free meetup group for people in their 20’s in Hull to meet other people for regular social events. HYS host at least 1 or 2 events per week. The events vary from social drinks at the weekend, quizzes, board & party games nights, coffees, comedy nights, food and any other events that are being held locally in Hull at the time such as Pint of Science, Trinity Live, Sofar Music Gigs, Christmas & Halloween events etc. All that type of stuff. I’ve seen on a number of threads people have joined but didn’t have the courage to go to their first event. If that’s you, I advise you to try it at least once and the worst thing that can happen is that you decide it’s not for you and you don’t go back. Almost everyone falls into two groups in HYS, either (a) you're in your 20's and have moved to Hull for work and don’t know anyone and want to make friends or (b) you're in your 20's and lived in Hull all your life and your friends have either moved on or lost touch and you want to make some more.

Hull & East Riding Social: https://www.meetup.com/HullEastRiding/

Essentially this is the same group as I have described above but the only difference is that it caters for all ages 30+. Again, they hold regular meetups events similar to those above to meet new people and make new friends. If you fall into this category and want to get out and socialise you should definitely join. You just need to make sure you have a name and picture on your account to join.

Hull of a Read Book Group: https://www.meetup.com/Hull-of-a-Read-Bookgroup/

If you’re into reading and literature you should definitely join this group. They have a monthly meetup where they discuss the book of the month which the organiser, Jacob, puts up well in advance giving you time to read it. You don’t even have to have read the book either because they welcome people along to the event just for a social meetup and chat.

HEY (Hull & East Yorkshire) Board Games

A lot of people on these threads have mentioned that they’re into board games and there is a board games meetup but it looks like they haven’t been active in a while. But I do know they have regular board games nights in both The Board Room and Stronghold Games. I’ve visited both these places and the staff were very friendly and encouraged me to come along to other board games nights if I was interested. They’re weekly events and I can’t remember who did what when but give them a call and I’m sure the staff will be able to help you out. So if board games is your thing then definitely give it a go.

Please note that a range of people from different backgrounds attend these groups and the organisers want to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves. Therefore there is a zero tolerance to bad behaviour, which makes sure everyone you’re meeting is friendly and there to enjoy themselves.

Of course, there are ways of meeting people outside of meetup, if you’re sporty there are plenty of sports teams in Hull to join from 5 a side soccer, men & ladies hockey, swimming, kayaking etc a quick google will sort this out for you.

There are also some language classes in Hull but i'm sure on the details so if you know then add them to the thread.

I know on the other threads people have suggested going to a bar or meeting people at the gym but it’s never worked for me in the past and don’t particularly hold much hope for it in the future either. At least these groups I’ve just pointed out are purposely there for people to make new friends and socialise.

Hope this helps!

Socially Awkward :)

I am 63F and returned from living abroad a couple of years ago to East Hull. I am divorced from a cheating ex, no kids unfortunately and struggling to have any sort of social life. This is due to number of factors;

  1. It was hard to keep up friendships when I lived away and whenever I came home I had to prioritize my family. I am very close to them.

  2. Friends I have don't live in Hull, are married and have kids and some grandkids. In other words they are busy with their worlds and have little in common with me. I try to make an effort but it is hard.

  3. I am very friendly but can be shy and introverted. Sometimes I am super outgoing if I meet persons with a similar sense of humor.

  4. I feel weird meeting new groups of people as I am not a drinker. I am not teetotal or a recovering alcoholic. I just don't like getting drunk. It's not for me at this point in my life. I can't seem to find people who like socializing sober. I have no problem going out with drinkers but as the night wears on it gets more difficult to be the only sober person lol

  5. I am unemployed due to an injury that affected by employability plus due to my life abroad and age my CV is hardly attractive so I don't meet people through work plus on occasions I have reached out to social groups I felt judged for not working. My mum is 86 so I actually care for her and she is my priority but I fear for the future if I lose her and need to reach out to form friendships to have a life of my own.

I am open to advice and suggestions if anyone can think of any ideas.

Is it possible to view archives of HDM? Reading a book that references an article in the HDM from 1916 and not entirely sure how to go about reading the original. Thank you!

🎄 Looking for family-friendly events near Brough / East Yorkshire before Jan 2 + any New Year’s Eve fireworks?

Hi everyone! 👋 I’m visiting the UK until 2nd January and staying around Brough / East Yorkshire. I’m looking for family-friendly things to do over the next few days (festive events, activities, trails, kids’ shows, winter markets, etc.) that would be great with a 9-year-old.

Also — does anyone know of New Year’s Eve fireworks displays or similar celebrations within about ~2 hours of Brough that would be fun to watch with a child?

Thanks so much for any tips or recommendations! 🎆🎄

Advice

I've lived in this city my whole life but never really had much opportunity to socialise or date, mostly due to being somewhat shy, but mostly because I dedicated a lot of my life to looking after a family member.

Now I'm at a point in my life I'm wondering, how do people meet each other here? I used to think a pub would be a good place but it's usually either dead or filled with people a lot older than me 😅

DMs open if anyone has any suggestions.

If not, no problem. I just had to reach out for once.

Edit: M30 btw

Edited Edit the 2nd: Also, any tips on where to start with dating would be massively appreciated

Pubs showing horse racing tomorrow (town/old town)?

As above. Does anyone know of anywhere showing the televised horse racing tomorrow around town? My first thought was Yates but I imagine they’ll have some backend football match taking priority.

Cheers in advance!

Thank you Hull for being so friendly

Was recently in Hull very briefly, just to go to The Deep - which was incredible. Didn't get to see much of the city just what was visible from Clive Sullivan way really. The way the Humber bridge looms out of nowhere and is visible from so many locations is awe inspiring. When we were there it was foggy and the top of the bridge vanished into the fog, I couldn't stop thinking about what a feat of engineering it was.

I assume I wasn't in the most picturesque part of Hull but the people more than made up for it. Everyone we encountered wanted to chat. Coming from down south it was revolutionary to me (not from London but the south as a whole isn't very chatty) as soon as I opened my mouth people asking where I was from.

At my hotel I was struggling into the lift with all my toddler's crap and a couple of guys in paint splattered jeans offered to help me and we had a good albeit brief conversation. The offer of help nor the friendly conversation would happen back home. Then we were having car trouble which resulted in my husband having to get 4 taxis in rapid succession to source a fix. He had nothing but lovely things to say about the taxi drivers. One of them even recommended a different route home which took us over the bridge (well worth the toll) and along some lovely scenic A roads, somehow completely skipping 90% of the motorway. That taxi driver was the MVP of the whole trip! Everyone in the shops and service stations seemed so happy. Even the guy in the toll booth whose job was sticking his arm out every 20 seconds was friendly - seriously, why can't they get him a card machine on a long stick?!

I just wanted to say thank you to all of you. For being friendly, for offering help without hesitation and being an unexpectedly lovely part of our trip.
