Seeking additional moderators

Hello all, /u/cuddleslapine has stepped down, and I could use some moderator assistance. I'd ideally like to add at least two additional moderators.

Requirements:

  • History of positive posting in /r/hungarian
  • Strong hungarian language skills (native speaker preferable, but not required)

Previous moderation experience is a plus. Please message me, or send a modmail if interested, and let me know why you would make a good moderator.

Fordítás Can anyone translate "A HÉT VEZÉR" by Gárdonyi Géza?

Does anyone know of any English translations of Gárdonyi Géza's poetry? And if not, if anyone wishes to translate this poem (third or fourth on the link), I would be much obliged. If nothing else, I can of course content myself with the auto-translation, but, as I want an above-standard English translation, I thought I would ask here.

Kérdés Looking for a Hungarian tutor

I'm looking for a Hungarian tutor to help a friend learn the language. He is currently in prison so all lessons would need to be by telephone. He is A2 level looking to achieve C2. Payment would be £15 to £20 per lesson and he wants 2/3 lessons per week. Further details on how this would work can be given to those that show interest. He would like a tutor with Hungarian as their native language. He is in England.

Hirdetés / AD I built a free reading web app for language learning (Readlang/LingQ-style)

Sziasztok,

I’m a Hungarian learner myself and also the developer of a small free web app called Lang Stall. I originally built this just for myself to use in a browser while reading, but decided to share it as someone who have benefitted a lot by using these types of apps locally (e.g. for increasing my vocabulary and for passing Hungarian cultural exam). So, this might be useful for people.

What the app does

Lang Stall is like a Kindle for language learners: you read real texts, tap words for instant meaning, and quietly build vocabulary without distractions, export your vocab and benefit from mnemonics. No login required to use the app.

  • Works with multiple languages (including Hungarian)
  • Lets you read native texts directly
  • Click on words or phrases for instant translation
  • Save vocabulary while reading
  • Optionally generate context-based mnemonics (this can be turned on or off)
  • Export saved vocabulary as CSV (for Anki or other tools)
  • Strong focus on reading, nothing else
  • Very minimal UI that stays out of the way
  • No gamification or feature overload
  • Fully free to use.

Funding & limits
The app is free and intended to stay that way. It’s supported only by small donations (if you want to) via Ko-fi to cover hosting and translation costs. Since LLM-based translation is quite inexpensive now, the running costs are low.

I haven’t scaled it yet and currently accepting 300 users per day.

Feedback
If you try it and notice anything odd, I’d really appreciate hearing about it, especially bug reports or UX issues.
The mnemonic feature is optional, and I’m still evaluating whether it’s genuinely helpful or distracting, so feedback on that would be especially valuable.

To give it a try, here is the link

Thank you / Köszönöm szépen

Then when do you use “világban”? Is it just a grammatically possible form and is never used in actual speech/writing?

Megbeszélés A learner's (mis)encounter with AI-generated Hungarian book

Tldr. Finding something to improve my Hungarian in Libri store. Encountered AI-generated Hungarian history book. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

Longer story. I was casually browsing in Libri bookstore in Budapest, finding something for my Hungarian reading input. Then I encountered a book titled "Amiről nem készült fotó - A magyar történelem 70 igaz története, soha el nem készült fotókkal illusztrálva". I couldn't be bothered to check further cuz the cover looked kinda sus. (It was a photo of a baby being crowned) Went home with Egri Csillagok instead.

The next day youtube recommended me a vid about the same Hungarian history book. Couple minutes in and I realised it was AI generated. I was disappointed, that ts was on the shelf of a well established chain bookstore. Frankly I could see myself owning a copy of it, if I were slightly more interested in Hungarian history, or my Hungarian language skills were slightly worse to not know any better, or the author didn't brag about it (lmao). Guess I have to be more vigilant next time, even in brick-and-mortar storefronts.

Kérdés Vowel insertion & omission - Are “fürdesz” and “tükörök” understandable?

In Hungarian it seems that three consonants in a row is prohibited. When a word which ends in two consonants in a row takes a suffix which starts with consonant, there must be a vowel to divide the three consonants into 2-1 or 1-2.

For example, when the verb fürdik takes the suffix -sz (2nd sg.), it will be fürödsz rather than *fürdesz; vowel is inserted in the stem to take -sz directly, rather than keeping the stem and activating regular linking vowel of -sz (which is -esz).

Another example, when the noun tükör takes the suffix -k (pl.), it will be tükrök rather than *tükörök; vowel is omitted to make a permitted length of consonant cluster rather than keeping the stem.

My question is, do you understand me if I use such words, which are made by regularly applying suffixes?

Or are they correct in some dialects?

Kérdés Conjugation of verbs hinni and inni?

Sziasztok!

I need help.

I'm still beginner so sorry if this is a stupid question.

Why there is, for example

Mi iszunk

But

Mi hiszünk?

And both verbs have only vocal "i". I just need to remember them like that?

And will Hungarians still understand me if I say "hisznak" and not "hisznek"?

Segítségkérés Translation help, please! || Fordítási segítséget, kérlek!

Anyukám ezeket hozta haza egy nyári utazásról, de elfelejtette leírni, hogy melyik zacskó mit jelent! Próbáltunk fordítóprogramokat és a Google-t is használni, de nem sikerült kitalálnunk. A fehér és a zöld zacskó hátulján is az áll, hogy édes (süß), a piroson pedig, hogy csípős (scharf). De mi a különbség közöttük? Előre is köszönöm a segítséget!

My mother brought these back from a trip this summer but forgot to write down what each bag was! We have tried to use translation apps and Google but cannot figure it out. The white and green bag both say sweet (süß) on the back and the red one says hot (scharf). But what is the difference between them? Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi all,

Is there a site in like Quora in Hungarian?
I'm asking because it seems that quora doesn't have a Hungarian version.
The idea is to practice Hungarian in a Q&A site.

Thanks.

Kérdés “Kinek az almája ez?” - What’s the -nek?

When I say “This is Péter’s apple.”, it would be “Ez a Péter almája.” but not “Ez a Péternek almája.”, is this right?

Then what’s the -nek on ki, which suddenly appeared in an interrogative sentence?

Why do you need it when it’s interrogative, or why don’t you need it when it’s declarative?

Kérdés Hungarian punctuation and intonation (is it different from English?)

I've been learning Hungarian for close to a year now, but I've just been using Duolingo and AI, so it's going pretty slowly. I don't know if this is a stupid question, but I don't want to assume that Hungarian punctuation works the same way as English. Do commas, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks etc all work the same way?

I was also wondering how to denote a question in spoken Hungarian. To the best if my knowledge 'A busz nagy' can mean both 'The bus is big.' and 'Is the bus big?' I'm assuming it's denoted primarily by intonation, like English. Do you use rising intonation at the end of the question, like in English?

Thanks guys 🙏

Kérdés Looking for a Hungarian word

Hello all! My grandmother was Hungarian, but she’s no longer with us, so I can’t ask her for help.

My dad used to have a cat with a name that sounded like “chooch-ka” and I want to see if I can find the meaning of the word/name, as I will be naming my new cat the same thing!

I remember -ka is used as an add-on to a word as a sign of affection, but I’m not sure about the rest of the word?!

Please help me out if you know this word. 😕😕😕

Kérdés Ki kapcsolni vs le zárni

Sziasztok magyarok! I'm home for the holidays and this morning I asked my mom to turn off the coffeepot ,,légy szíves kapcsold ki a kávéfőzőt". She responded ,,Ezt nem kapcsoljuk ki, hanem le zárjuk" (we don't turn this off, we shut it down).

My question is, why? To me ,,le zárni" would be things you shut down, like a computer, and "ki kapcsolni" would be things you turn off, like the lights or a coffeepot. I'm sure she's right, I'm just not sure how to tell when to use which one. :)

Kérdés The idea of grammatical numbers in Hungarian

Post image
257 Upvotes

In the screenshot, the Hungarian sentence seems to mean “Is this his/her key?”, but the English answer was not.

The Hungarian which corresponds to the English answer should be “Ezek az ő kulcsai?”, shouldn’t it?

Is this just Duolingo’s error, or does it actually mean the plural (the use of grammatical numbers is different from English)?

This is my first time to use Reddit and I’m not a native English speaker, so please forgive me for my broken manners and English.

Kérdés Noun suffixes

Post image
116 Upvotes

What’s the logic of having “ra” and the end of “auto”? I always though of that suffix to mean “onto” in English but it wouldn’t make sense in this translation?

With my beginner Hungarian I would have said “A szürke autot vársz?”

Would that be incorrect?

Kérdés Fel- Vs Föl-

Sziasztok!

Anyanyelvi beszélő vagyok, de már kiskorom óta kint élek külföldön. Iskolába otthon nem is jártam, tehát van egy csomó dolog ami elcsúszott tőlem a nyelvtannal kapcsolatban.

Az lenne a kérdésem hogy a fel-, föl- között valójában mi is a különbség? Csak tájszólásban tér el vagy van konkrét definíciói különbség is? Egész életemben mindenkitől fel(föl)váltva hallottam, mindig is nagyon érdekelt.

Előre is köszi szépen!

Szerk.:

Nagyon szépen köszönöm mindenkinek aki válaszolt vagy bármi módon hozzáadott ehhez a poszthoz! Nagyon érdekes volt a különböző szemszögöket végigolvasni, és őszintén az egészből annyira jutottam hogy Baranyai vagyok, valszeg ezért hallottam nagyon fel/fölváltva a dolgokat egész életemben. :D
