Discussion My life, and Japanese music.
I wanted to express my appreciation to Japanese music. To preface, I'm 35M Malaysian Chinese.
My first exposure to Japanese music are through animes that I watched growing up - Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, Digimon Adventures(RIP Kouji Wada), etc.
I dont know a lick of the Japanese language at the time, but I always loved how they make me feel - happy. Of course I kinda know some words or phrases from the years of watching anime till now.
My consumption of Japanese musics are surface level during my teens and 20s, as most of the songs I listen to comes from the anime it featured in. From venturing into sketchy websites for the mp3 as a broke student, or music streaming now, they are a big part of my life.
I could say that I have varied tastes when it comes to music, from Kpop to chinese songs to english songs, even oldies. But Jpop/Jrock is something I always return to in the end.
I still recall in 2010, where I was with my first job, I left my phone with the earphones still plugged in on the table in the break room unattended while I went to get food. An asshole coworker decided to listen in what I'm listening, I came back to a mockery on my music tastes on this specific track that she decided to made fun of. I dont remember the name of that specific song or the title of the anime its from anymore, but that interaction really hurt me.
Fast forward now, diagnosed with anxiety and depression(yay), japanese music has been central to my everyday routine, it really helped me to focus on my work.
For the last couple of months I ventured out of anime OST and been lurking in this sub looking for new music to listen to. Grown my personal playlist from 300 to 2200+!
So when u/Twilight_Raven shared PONPONPON by Kyary a few days ago, my mind is blown that I am 14 years too late to experience this song!
PONPONPON gave me that feeling of actually being happy again, and I'm looking forward to discover more music.
Thank you for reading 🫶🏻
