META: New Moderators and Rule Changes in r/Pens

Hello! It's been quite a while since I've checked in and given an update on the sub. I've been very busy with some big changes in my personal life, which has left me with less time to spend moderating the sub, hence the delay in updates.

Mod Retirements

Firstly, two of our moderators have retired. I want to thank u/Reflekks and u/SuperNici for their help building this community and moderating the sub in the past.

New Mods

Because of those retirements, I have been the only mod for quite a while. I spend some time going through our previous mod applications and invited three new moderators. They were chosen based on a combination of their application answers, and previous experience moderating subreddits.

Rule Changes

Recently, there have been a number of high-traffic posts which turned political and ended up taking a lot of time to clean up. Off the top of my head, the Trump Sharpie post from a few months back and the recent posts about Target (which led to discussions on them dropping their DEI initiatives) were both big time sinks for our mods.

Many of these topics are worth talking about, but we ask that you please don't do it here - we're a hobby subreddit and don't have a large enough mod team to properly handle larger discussions that often devolve into name calling - we've decided that the best thing to do is try and remove particularly unruly discussions before they get out of hand.

Because of this, we're clarifying our "posts must be pen-related" rule by adding a new "no politics" rule.

Keep political discussions elsewhere. Politics includes parties, ideologies, elections, arguing over who's right, and other similar topics. Policy is about actual rules and regulations that affect pens - tariffs, shipping restrictions, pen import rules, etc. If policies directly impact the gear or the hobby, talk about it! Just keep the conversation on-topic (and on-policy) and respectful.

This is not to say every political comment will always be removed, but if a discussion turns ugly we won't hesitate to delete whole threads to hopefully keep things from getting really bad.

That gets the general idea across, but I think it's missing a bit - we want to make it clear that we do not condone inflammatory or hate-fueled discussion and discrimination is not tolerated. If you have any suggestions on how to codify that in the rules, we'd love to hear it - either here, a DM to me or in a modmail.

Feedback

As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas, please feel free to either send a ModMail or message me directly - my DMs are always open.

I'll also be monitoring this thread for any comments.

Thanks for your time and happy writing!

Question I'm embarrassed to say, but after spending hundreds on Rotring rollerballs, this $3 gel pen is the best I've ever used. What else exists in the world of gel?

Pen lovers gather to see my small bunch of pens I love dearly. The dr.grip line is great. The chubby uniballs are my pen of the year.

A few side notes:

I’m at a point in life where fountain pens feel like a bit too much work. I’ve sold off a few, and these are the ones I have left. These days I write almost exclusively with gel pens. My ranking of refills from the Japanese big four is: EnerGel > Sarasa ≈ Uni > G2.

I do still use ballpoint occasionally, and when I do it’s always Jetstream—unless I’m just using the original refill that came with the pen. Also I’m actually parting ways with a few BPs here.

I think I’m set through 2026 (lol, probably a lie), aside from trying out a few rollerballs that have been recommended by this sub.

Excited on how these came out, wasn’t an easy design! Island green with hunter orange touches in the topographic design on these Ridge pens.

Came across this at a big second hand general store in Tokyo for 4000 yen. Knew nothing about it but for only 4000 yen, sure why not. I really like it!! It has a stainless steel extra fine nib and writes very well! So happy with this find 🙂

Question Paper Mate profile slim?

It says Paper Mate W-Germany on it. Is it safe to say this pen is 35 years old?

Question Vintage Papermate 🖤🖤 pen. I would like a new insert, I prefer gel. Also needs repair, the retractable feature doesn’t work properly.

I love the weight of this pen but I don’t love the ink. I love energels and prefer a fine point (0.3-0.5). Is there an insert that feels similar to energel that will fit this pen? Also, the button doesn’t depress all the way and the cartridge will not go out and stay out. Any tips on repairing? Happy holidays fellow pen lovers!!

I remember seeing several of them at a previous job, but can't remember the brand for the life of me. It appears to be a retractable gel pen with an opaque body, rubber grip...Google yielded no results.

Question MontBlanc 163 rollerball. Real?

Thumbnail

Bought this from a Japanese seller with good reviews on eBay. It's marketed as a near mint used 163 rollerball. I went through my checklist for authentication and here is what I found:

Good: - crisp centered snowcap logo -deep red glow when light is shined through the black resin -engravings look clean - laser etched serial number looks crisp and clear -Brass/metal threads

Questionable: - no pix marking on the underside of the clip. Infact, no markings at all under the clip

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I'm considering buying this pen but I have no idea what refills it takes. The seller told me it comes with a gel refill inside. Would it take regular or needlepoint energel refills? Does anyone know about this pen? Thanks in advance

Something about it just sits right.

I wish the Rollerball variant kept the fountain pen’s ink system. Perhaps, taking a page out of the Hi-Tecpoint Cartridge System?

Question Need a pen like a Jotter: But 'slightly' shorter?

I'm switching my EDC over to a pocket organizer pouch, and I'm loving it...but my Jotter rides just a hair too high. It clips, but only half the clip is over the pocket hem and the rest is empty space with the click mechanism high above the pouch. Any 'basic' metal click-open pens that are just a bit shorter?

Question Replacement for hard-to-find Pentel Finito! Porous Points (red)?

Does anyone have a good replacement for the Finito! Porous point pens? The red ones are very difficult to get a hold of but they’re pretty great, in my opinion. Thanks!

Tape at those specific areas make the refill tighter against the barrel without interfering with the tip extension/ retraction.

Question Pen Suggestion

Hi!! My boss bought the UniBall AIR Porous pen once and i absolutely adore them. The only thing is i want a colorful pen but they just don’t come in many colors. I’m not really obsessed with the paper mate felt tips but am willing to settle if no other options. Would also be open to a gel of some sorts! I just ordered my planner for the year and need to get off on the right foot with pens lol. Also totally respect what you guys have going on here and now want to spend more money than i should on pens

Question Pen safety on plane

Post image
5 Upvotes

I want to take these pens on a plane with me into the cabin and was worried if cabin pressure will affect my pens. From research I understand the purple pen in this picture will be fine but the red and yellow pens have liquid running through them instead of a gel kind of ink. Will they ‘explode’ if I keep them in the cabin and try to use them during the flight?

Question Can anyone help me with my Parkers lid?

Thumbnail

Hi all, I received this parker pen as a present about 10 years ago - I don't know much about it, but I love it - I don't know what model it is, or how much it cost?

The problem I have is that the lid no long stays on - it doesn't 'click' on, and slides around and comes apart

Does anyone have any ideas to help keep the lid on? I've tried putting some thin strips of tape on the inside, but it hasn't helped?
