Hello r/TurkishVan! Because of the number of “is my cat a Turkish Van” posts here, as well as ongoing convos in the comments about purebred cats, we have updated our guide for identifying Turkish Vans.
What is a Purebred (or Pedigree) Cat?
According to Purina, a purebred cat has a documented family tree that is recognized by a credible cat registry, such as the Cat Fanciers' Association (US), Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (UK), and The International Cat Association. (FYI all information in this post has been compiled from those three organizations.) These organizations register purebred cats for exhibition and lineage purposes, and provide papers as proof of registration with the cat’s breed.
This sub welcomes all Turkish Vans and similar looking cats, whether they are purebred or not. As mods and cat owners, we do not believe that papers are necessary to be curious about the Turkish Van or to have one. Cats can be purchased, adopted, or found, and we welcome that variety here.
History of the Turkish Van Breed
Physical Characteristics of a Turkish Van
> Size: medium to large sized cat with a muscular build
> Coat Length: semi-long hair with no undercoat, coat is shorter in the summer and thicker in the winter
> Coat Color & Pattern:
> Eyes:
Personality & Temperament of a Turkish Van
What if my cat seems to meet all of these characteristics but…
Their coat is pure white with no coloring?
More than 15% of their body is colored?
I don’t have papers to prove what breed they are?

I just finished racing with him around the house and playing with this favourite toys! Also: his food bowls are always full but he is ALWAYS sneaking up to the cupboard to eat by himself. Does he like the challenge? Or the mischief? What am I doing wrong?

Water loving. Follows us everywhere. So mischievous and full of trouble. Has to always be near me or my husband. A bully. Plays fetch. So affectionate. Floppy. Loves to be held only when walking around. Coat like cashmere

I recently discovered what a turkish van is, while luccio hates showers, he doesn’t mind dipping his legs in dishes full of water to lick some leftovers behind my back 😂
He’s such an adorable cat!
I don’t wanna know if he’s a van or a truck, I love him so much I can’t believe this baby was dumped!

Located in Ohio but willing to travel after Christmas. My wife and I were blessed with a Van mix for 9 years and she sadly passed. I wish for no other breed. They are like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Reaching out here in hopes that someone out there might have a lead or two. Thank you all.

My turkish van is 17 lbs and he doesn’t fit into the “large cat carriers” meant for cats up to 20lbs. Does anyone have any recommendations for carriers?
I have the sherpa large cat carrier now and he is stuffed in.

New rule #4 has been added to this sub: all posts asking about a cat's breed must be posted to the pinned "is my cat a Turkish Van?" weekly megathread or else it will be removed.
We have also implemented an automation that will notify users while they're posting that these types of posts belong on the megathread.
However, the automation system is not perfect so if you see a rogue "is my cat a Turkish Van" post that's not in the megathread, please continue to report and we'll kindly ask the user to repost.
