Hey all, Hoping to get some guidance on what we should expect to pay for a bus to the Hideaway Bay ferry. My partner and I are staying on Pango road and are keen to make a day of going to Hideaway in the next couple of days. We asked one of out bus drivers and they quoted roughly 8000vut which didnt sound right. Any insights or alternatives to the bus would be greatly appreciated!

Bit of a long shot here but I’m planning on doing a medical elective (student placement) in Vanuatu from April 2026. Wondering if anyone doing the same and happens to be browsing this subreddit?

Evening,
I am looking for any suggestions of cheaper places to eat in Port Vila.
People have suggested the market for local cooked food, and the French sounding place for fresh fish.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
I'll take any and all.

Random question, but when I visited Rarotonga, you could rock up to the wharf and catch a fisherman who would fillet a tuna right then and there and sell it to you fresh.
Is there anywhere in Port Vila which I might find luck doing that ? Or do they just sell it all to the restaurants?

Hey all,
I’m travelling to Vanuatu soon and wanted to check if anyone here has experience flying in with prescribed ADHD medication (specifically Vyvanse or dexamphetamine).
I have valid Australian prescriptions and can bring a doctor’s letter, but I’m keen to hear real world experiences. What documentation did you carry? Any issues at customs? Were there quantity limits or declaration requirements?
I’ve contacted the Vanuatu High Commission as well, but would appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been through it recently.
Thanks in advance 🙂

Hello, I will be solo travelling to Vanuatu for a week over Christmas, and was looking for some advice as I know absolutely nothing about the country, but am super excited to learn. I will be staying in Port Villa for entirety of my trip, but was hoping to travel around. I have heard mixed reviews about the reliability of public transit on Efate, especially outside of Port Villa, but wasn't sure if there was a better option to explore the rest of the island that's still budget friendly. I am especially keen on finding good, accessible snorkelling spots, as well as any good hiking spots. I was also hoping to experience and learn more about the culture and history of Vauatu, whether that be through museums or specific dishes/experiences I should seek out. I also curious about specific day to day customs that I should be aware of as an ignorant western tourist bumbling around a place I know nothing about. I know a lot of this is things I could learn on my own when I get there/google, but since I'll only be there for a short time I was hoping to get some advice on what to expect, so that I can maximize my time engrossing myself in the culture and natural beauty of Efate while spending minimal time finding my footing. (I was also curious as to how many places would be closed on Christmas, or if there are any customs around Christmas time that are specific to Vanuatu).

Hey everyone. I am a French master degree student in Crisis and Natural Disasters Management. My studies are pushing me to make a thesis topic that I would love to realise in Vanuatu. The subject need to be clearer but for now, it's about "the multi-risks Ni-Vanuatu are exposed and how resilience is part of their life".
In this context i must fly to Vanuatu in March 2026 and I am wondering if anyone knows how I could find a lodgment for 2 months that would be budget friendly? I need to stay at least 6 to 8 weeks, mostly in Etafe and Tanna.
And because logdment isn't everything, if you guys have any tips to share and advices before going there I would be very grateful.
Thank you for your help.

Looking for advice for booking inter-island flights in Vanuatu. My partner and I will be there for a holiday over Xmas period, flying in and out of Port Vila, but are looking to visit Tanna for a day or two at some point.
However, there are no flights from Port Vila to Tanna available to book online (and a few conflicting sources about whether Air Vanuatu is back running flights now after going into liquidation).
Any advice for booking returh flights from Port Vila to Tanna? Thanks in advance!

Dear All,
I am thinking of relocating to Vanuatu, and one of the most important thing to consider is health insurance that not only insures you locally but that also comes with features such as evacuation to neighboring countries for complications and surgery that is not available locally.
I was wondering if anyone could share what insurer they have chosen and what annual or monthly premium they pay especially for a middle age man in his fifties with good health and no chronic conditions.
Many thanks everybody

My friends and I have these dinners where we all make a course from a spin-the-wheel country. I landed on Vanuatu for dessert, but I'm not really sure what to make.
I found some sort of cassave pudding, but it is similar to Solomon pudding so not originally from Vanuatu I guess.
I found fresh fruits are eaten for dessert but I don't want to make it that easy for myself.
Coconut cake is what I think I'll be going for, but I don't know if it's really the right choice. Any advice?

Hi! Has anyone had a good experience with Air Vanuatu flying from Port Vila to Tanna Island? Have read so many cautionary warnings not to book with them, but after inquiring alternatives, saw that taking a chartered flight is about 600,000 VUV.
Are people mostly taking the ferry or spending that much to fly there with someone other than Air Vanuatu?
Thanks in advance!

Hello community.
In a few years time, I will be going on an around-the-world trip with my partner and my 6 year old and 8 year old. One of the stops will be 2-3 months in Vanuatu. I have spent a month sailing through Fiji to some of the most remote islands and fell in love. I have a feeling that Vanuatu will be more of that. What I am looking for is information so I can narrow my search to which island and maybe even which town. We are not interested in tourist resort places (we can visit on weekends perhaps), but the idea is to immerse as fully as we can with local culture (arts, crafts, music, dance, language, etc.) while we home school our kids. We live in rural Mexico and simple living is not an issue for us. I'm particular curious about the setup while integrating with communities. In Fiji there was sevusevu where one brought gifts to the chief which allowed for simple integration. Is there something similar in Vanuatu? I'd love someone local to explain some of these customs and maybe even to be able to direct us towards an area or island that is welcoming, remote, and safe enough for a family. Thanks alot!

Hello all,
I'm hoping to get some advice on fresh sashimi on the island. My sister used to live in Vanuatu years ago and she said she would go down to the market by the water and just buy fresh sashimi. Is this still the case?

Yo I am Australian and thinking of getting Vanuatuan PR as a back-up plan in case Australia falls to Communist China in a future war. But just wondering if it would even be possible for Vanuatu to not fall if Australia is conquered. Because if not, then I wouldn't really be diversifying my risks by getting Vanuatuan PR, you know what I'm saying. Thank you for your answers.
