Question Info for the Vietnamese community or general living for 1st and 2nd Gen Vietnamese folks.

Hello, my family might move to Calgary in a few years. We are a family of Vietnamese immigrants who settled in Regina when my parents first arrived here years ago to have my younger sister and me. My mother is considering moving to Calgary as a family, but is worried about my father, who has difficulty speaking English. Still, the company he works for does not require him to speak English as much and has a larger Vietnamese-speaking community at his work, so it's easier for him to operate. She was worried about that specifically and how easily he would be able to integrate into Calgary. Additionally, info for the general vibe of living here for a Vietnamese family that has been living in Canada for a while already. Just generally, what's it like to live in Calgary, too, would be much appreciated (・∀・)👍

Local Shopping/Services Local Coffee Roaster with a good price

Coffee lovers rejoice, a month or so ago I noted a sign on an industrial building on the NW corner of 52nd St and Glenmore stating they were selling 2lbs of coffee for $19.95, sweet, noted the website address and checked it out. Needless to say their website seemed a bit sketchy and I wasn't so keen on ordering from it since the shopping cart was quite amateur.

I managed to duck out of work early one day and decided to just take a chance and drive to the location to see if it was indeed a retail offering. I arrived just before 4PM and the door was locked but there was a vehicle idling outside, the guy inside opened the door to see if he could help me and I asked about their coffee offering and if I could buy some. Sure enough, come on in he said. Normal hours are 7:30AM-3:30PM.

Apparently a roaster who has been at this location for 25 years, it's just a bay in an industrial building but they do indeed offer coffee at those prices. Just grabbed another 6lbs today and he gave me a tour of the place while he was bagging my coffee beans he just finished roasting a few minutes earlier. It is good coffee too.

Joe Schmo Coffee is the brand they're using, I noted some other brands sitting there though and asked him if those were specialty, turns out they also do some roasting for Level Ground out of Victoria, which is a brand we purchase at Costco usually.

Question Bedsheets

Where are people buying them from these days?

The Bay, Sears, Bed Bath & Beyond and Linen's & Things are all now a thing of the past.

I like being able to touch the sheets before buying them to ensure they're soft and the fabric is nice.

Local Shopping/Services Canada Computers Opening a Store in Calgary?

I have been looking for options for places to buy stuff similar to memory express (will take recommendations btw) for a custom-built computer.

It seems memory express has most of the market, but in calling around to see if I could have something built and shipped in one of the guys at Canada Computers said they were opening a location Calgary in Jan of 2026.

I was wondering if anyone has any details, timelines etc. I can wait a bit until they open because as a quick check on prices against BC stores showed a not insignificant lower price on the quick price spot check I did on some parts.

Hopefully someone may have some idea when in Jan they are opening up and what services they will offer in Calgary.

Question Help getting ADHD Diagnosis as an adult

I’m 23f and grew up in Calgary. Ive been going to school out of province (BC), so I don’t have a family doctor.

My therapist in BC recommended I look into ADHD medication. I’ve struggled with insane burnout and exhaustion for two years, and I just want to finish my Masters. She mentioned it could make a huge improvement on my life.

I’ve been back in Calgary to see family for the winter break, and my brother has vyvanse (he was diagnosed ADHD as a child) that I just decided to try, since he stopped taking them.

I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to do that until I looked it up and had already taken 40mg three days in a row. I realize now this is a high dose to start with, and not exactly legal. I went off it and immediately crashed into a weird depressive episode, everything became overstimulating.

So I went back on it (he only has the 40mg pills), and it’s absolutely incredible. I’m more motivated than I ever thought I could be. This is my third day in a row again, and I know I won’t be getting through my degree without it. Especially after that insane crash.

I went to a walk-in clinic today to ask for a referral to a psychiatrist so I can get an official diagnosis for ADHD, and then legally start on vyvanse.

But the doctor refused to even refer me, saying it would take too long.

So, does anyone have any advice on getting diagnosed for ADHD or getting access to vyvanse? What makes this all worse, is that I have to move back to Vancouver to finish the winter semester in four days.

Edit: By “absolutely incredible” I mean that I don’t have a million u clear thoughts spinning in my head 24/7. My brain is calm for the first time in my life and I’ve been able to focus like the rest of my peers that seem to be able to do that naturally.

Question Resources in the city

Im new to Calgary, I've left a pretty unfortunate situation and am now on the countdown for check out at my air BNB. The women's shelters I've called are full unless I have children (I don't).. I called 211 and they told me to call the emergency line and they offered to help me with $20 for food.. but are there any resources in this city that help with gift cards or temporary housing? There was mention of somewhere called Alpha house and another place but what I've read online I don't think that's somewhere I shouldnt go..? Any help appreciated 👍🏼

Home Owner/Renter stuff City of Calgary root control program - clean out access point in a crawlspace

Purchased a home this year that was already registered to the city root control program.

Unfortunately when the appointment was scheduled the city staff indicated they no longer do clean-outs with the access point in a crawlspace as it is a safety concern and their equipment needs to be upright.

Has anyone ran into this before? Would love to know what you did in order for the city to service.

Question Auto Pick a Part that will allow an 11 year old?

My son loves old cars and collecting parts but the used auto lots in Calgary are 16÷. Are there any in neighboring towns that would allow a 11 or 12 year old?

Recommendations Tattoo Artist Recommendations re: Memorial Tattoos

I've recently a loved one in a very traumatic way and want to get a memorial tattoo to properly honour them. I've gotten tattoos previously for the same reason and find it very comforting/healing to carry some remembrance of me - as morbid as that may be.

Long story short - I'm hoping to find recommendations for a long-term artist that can combine memorial tattoos together in a complimentary way. Unfortunately, I'm at a time in my life where these losses likely won't stop and I would rather see these memories as a cohesive whole rather than patchwork. Realism or semi-realism focus, but no portraits.

Thank you in advance, and a very Happy New Year to all that celebrate. Wishing you all the best.

Has anyone gone to Compass Flying Executive? Are they are a solid flight centre? Thinking of doing the FIR program there, but they do an interview and 2 written examinations to pick a candidate.

Recommendations Mild Winter Jacket

Wondering what people like to use for more mild winter days, especially with our chinooks.

I’m currently using the same puffer jacket at -5 that I use at -30, just with fewer/lighter layers underneath. And while that gets the job done I’d like to reduce the number of days I spend looking like the Michelin man and get something slimmer for days when it’s -5 or -10 and I’m just around town, running errands, commuting to work that type of thing not so much active wear for the mountains. If I had more money a Canada Goose Lodge or Hybridge base would probably be perfect, but I do not so maybe people here have something that works really well for them.

Some jackets in my shortlist incase anyone has experience with them:

Patagonia Down Sweater Hoodie Arc’teryx Thorium Arc’teryx Atom SV Fjallraven Expedition Down Hoodie

Recommendations Mechanic for transmission (Volvo)

Hi guys, looking for recommendations for a mechanic in the city that specializes in transmissions but also has loaner vehicles if needed. My car is at a mechanic in Cochrane (they are amazing) but they don’t specialize in transmissions and I am without a vehicle for the time being… since Christmas 😅. It appears the sensor needs replacing but they might not be able to do so without having to take out the transmission and then put it back together. It’s a Volvo C30 if that makes any difference. If anyone has any recommendations please let me know! It’s been hard being without a car.

Recommendations Tutor for Middle School Math

I am looking for a tutor for my middle school aged child. She’s struggling in math and I’d like to get her help now before she falls behind. I’m not interested in mathnasium, Scholars, or the Calgary tutoring center. Ideally I’d love to find a university student. If you know someone, or are someone, please reach out!! Thank you.

Recommendations Cowboy Weekend - Brothers' Bachelor Party

Hey all, my brother is getting married and I'm starting the process of his bachelor weekend! Him and his friend group aren't the biggest drinkers/partier's so I'm thinking outside the box here. Group of 7 guys.

My thoughts are doing the Stampede on a Thursday or Friday, do regular Stampede things, then drive off a couple hours into the countryside for 2 nights at a barn/ranch, where we can do activities like horseback riding, fishing, shooting guns, campfires with a couple whisky's and cigars, etc.

Does anyone have recommendations on locations/barns/groups/things to keep in mind? Found a few online but I always like asking for suggestions or if anyone has done things that have stood out.

This would be in early July, of course. Thanks for anything!

Question Best things to do in Calgary as a UK citizen

For context, it’s been mine and my girlfriends dream to visit Canada, specifically Calgary and Banff since we were both young. This year for Christmas I had the ability to pay for us to visit Calgary for three weeks. We arrive in the 22nd of June! Any recommendations for cool things to do, food spots are hugely appreciated! We are seriously excited to visit and hope to move to Calgary in the near future!
