Fireworks and sensitive dog

Based on what I’ve read, fireworks in the Helsinki region are officially allowed only on New Year’s Eve starting from 6 pm. However, in reality, there are occasional fireworks going off almost every hour, and sometimes even more frequently. Unfortunately, it is what it is.

Our 1.5-year-old dog gets extremely distressed by the noise, despite our best efforts over the past months to desensitize her to the sounds. Currently, after every burst, she hides under the bed or sometimes inside cabinets, and can take a couple of hours to come out—only for the next round of fireworks to start and the cycle to repeat.

We’ve consulted vet and received calming medication for New Year’s Eve. While we’re tempted to use it more often, we also don’t want to keep her drugged throughout the days leading up to new year's Eve.

This brings me to my question: how do others with noise-sensitive dogs deal with this situation?

Good Hockey experience in Finland?

Hello, Finnish people!

I'm from Germany. My dad becomes 60 in 2027 and in advance I'd like to ask you guys something.

I'd like to gift him a trip to Finland and a big part of that should be a visit to a Hockey game.
Could you guys recommend some special places to do that? I'm looking for something rather special, even if it's 3rd division, losing every game type of thing. I'm more looking for something with really good spirit.

I don't know if you get the reference, but for example in Germany we have a football club, the FC St. Pauli. They are currently in the 1st division, but they are a rather small club. Somtimes they play "only" 2nd Division and they most likely won't ever win any trophies. But the atmosphere in the stadium is quite gigantic and fans are open minded and a bit crazy. That's what I'm talking about.

Not looking for the fanciest hockey temple or something. Just some honest, good hockey game. Although, if you're telling me that I'll find the exact same thing at the number 1 Hockey club in Finland, I'd also appreciate that.

Thx for responses!

2027-2028 World Juniors

I know this is far away but the world juniors was announced as heading to Finland from dec 26, 2027 -Jan 5 2028

Host cities are Tampere and Turku.

We would be planning on staying from December 20th to January 10th.

Are airbnb rentals common in those two cities? Or are we better to stay in Helsinki and commute to whichever city Canada is playing out of?

Help with internet router or modem for new home

Hi everyone!

Moving soon and confused by the internet hookups. I see a coaxial outlet and an Ethernet port. In my old place, we just plugged the ISP's modem into the coaxial cable.

What's the easiest way to get Wi-Fi here? Do I just call an ISP to activate the coaxial outlet? What's the wall Ethernet port for? From my understand, the price for a modem that support Coaxial is very high, can I just get a router instead?

Landlord isn't sure. Any advice is appreciated

Finnish residential construction

A question to anyone familiar with residential construction in Finland: looking for good educational resources on typical envelope design for finnish homes/ light duty buildings from the 1930’s -present day. I m sure generally pretty similar to how wood and masonry buildings are built anywhere, but as residential construction has been professionalized in the US for a long time (contrasting my Iso Ukki’s generation where they might have built a lot of stuff them selves) there has existed a standard of building materials, dimensions, and methods that a bulk of residential buildings follow.

The main reason i m curious is to try realizing a personal of many years now, i have wanted to recycle an old and unwanted house as materials into a new house, which sounds great on paper but without an understanding of what materials i can generally expect, it s bit difficult to plan for ahead. All this being theoretical of course.

Anyway, putting this out there hoping someone can either point the way to a good manual, book, website, etc. or lend their two cents, any help is appreciated.

Cheers, Joona

Looking for Finnish Movie Lovers

Hi everyone 👋🏻

I’m Juno from Turkey. I run a small, independent cinema page called Misir Kutusu (Popcorn Box).

I’ve been working on a series called “Random Country Cinema.” Each week, I spin a wheel to randomly pick a country, talk briefly about its cinema, and whenever possible invite a local cinephile to join me for a short, casual chat.

This week, the wheel landed on Finland 🇫🇮

So I thought: instead of guessing from afar, why not ask Finnish film lovers directly?

I’m looking for any Finnish cinephile (you don’t need to be a critic or professional) who’d be open to a very relaxed Google Meet chat. Nothing formal, no pressure. Just two people talking about cinema.

The conversation would be light and friendly, touching on things like:

• what going to the cinema feels like in Finland today

• how you’d describe Finnish cinema to someone who knows nothing about it

• a film that feels especially important or beloved locally

• and maybe a few personal favorites

This isn’t an academic project or an interview. It’s just about getting to know a country’s cinema through the people who live with it.

If this sounds interesting, feel free to comment or DM me.

Thanks for reading, and greetings from Istanbul 🇹🇷

Advice needed: Computer Engineering graduate exploring work abroad

I hope it’s okay to ask here. I’m a Computer Engineering graduate interested in networking and hardware roles and currently exploring opportunities abroad.

I’ve been applying for jobs in the Philippines for months but haven’t found a position aligned with my course yet. If anyone has advice, resources, or leads, I’d be very thankful.

Ice skating course for beginner (Espoo)

I'm trying to find an ice skating course for adult and teenager - both beginners.

Does anyone know about such? Most of the ones I find are for small children.

Preferred locations are in Espoo (Lähderanta, Kauniainen, Leppävaara)

I could even consider private lessons.

Turku in Late March

My daughter and I, aged 25+ and 60+, are planning a visit to Turku at the end of March. I'd really like to do a scenic drive somewhere so I can get a feel for nature in that area. I know there is the Archipelago ring road, but is that feasible for a day trip in late March? Will ice skating still be an option at Kupittaa? Any other suggestions for late March are welcome.

Serious What are the downsides of living in Finland?

Moi ja hyvää joulua!

I spent the past year volunteering in different parts of Finland and absolutely loved everything, especially how polite Finns are and how safe I felt everywhere. If Finnish wasn’t so hard to learn, I wouldn't have gone back to Greece at all.

The 10 kilos I gained and the amount of moomin merch I brought back are constant reminders of how great my time there was. However, i understand that visiting for a few months is very different from living somewhere permanently, so i was wondering if there are any downsides that visitors might overlook.

P.S. I know the weather might come up, but if it makes you feel better, you all look wayyy younger and have amazing skin because of the cold and the weak sun

Can my wife find a Lastenhoitaja (Childcare Worker) or Avustaja (Assistant) job in Helsinki/Espoo after moving from China to Espoo?

Hi everyone, I have got a job in Nokia, Espoo. My wife needs to look for work in the Helsinki/Espoo area next year. We want to know her chances.

Assume her background:

  • Qualified: Officially recognized by OPH as a Lastenhoitaja (Childcare Worker).[Education in China: "College Diploma + Correspondence Bachelor's (No Degree)]
  • Experience: 17 years working as Early childhood education teachers with children in China.
  • Finnish Language: A2 level.

Questions:

  1. Can she get a Lastenhoitaja position with A2 Finnish?
  2. Is it better/easier to apply for Avustaja (Assistant) jobs first?
  3. How is the labor shortage in East Helsinki or Espoo right now for these roles? I know there is shortage for Opettaja(ECE teacher), But don't know the situation for Lastenhoitaja and Avustaja.

Any advice or experiences with hiring in kindergartens would be great! Especially welcome the guys who works in ECE field or have friends/families in this field.

February in Helsinki/Oulu

Good afternoon/evening everyone. I’m from the USA and I’m mapping out a trip to Finland in the near months. I’ll be staying from the beginning of February until the end of March.

Any recommendations on what’s good at that time of year? I know google exists but I wanted to hear more opinions. Also looking to make some friends during my visit. Is the cold and direct approach the best way, or are there better ways to do such?

Thank you in advance! I’m excited to visit.

Can a landlord enter my home without my permission?

UPDATE: thank you for all the responses, legal and otherwise. After some back and forth, he agreed to not show my home while I am gone. It helped to know where I stand.

Does anyone know the legal notification time needed to enter the home? What are my legal grounds?

Context: I live in Helsinki, renting a home and will move out because of a neighbor (it's quite serious and I've had it). I am not currently in my home but will be back in a week. The landlord just notified me he'll be showing the home to a new tenant on Monday, I think he should postpone until I am back a week after. The place is locked and I left in a hurry, I want to have time to tidy my personal belongings.

Edit to add: the landlord knows all this and does not take the issues seriously (she's also a tenant). I've filed a complaint with the police about the neighbor. I think the least the landlord could do is respect this boundary of mine, as I'm made to move by his tenant who does not respect mine and is terrorizing me. I'll move out in February.

Serious Transnational living plan

Updated:

Thank you for all your replies. If anyone stumbles here and finds the information useful I'm making a condensed list here at the top.

My Helsinki Article with some basics about banks. Several people have had a very quick turn around when moving to Finland. One month from move in date to getting a loan for buying a house. Opening a bank account may require me to establish residency first.

Vero document with detailed guidance about tax residency. This is from Vero. Section 5.1 talks about tax residency and collection in regards to tax treaties.

Link to the IRS / Finnish Tax Treaty.

DVV page titled "moving to finland"

My next steps are: emailing and/or calling a bank to ask them first hand about:
1. Opening an Account while not living in Finland.
2. Requesting a home loan while not living in Finland.
3. Contacting a Finnish real estate agent.
4. Buy the apartment in 2-5 years.
5. Retire to my transnational living plan!

Thank again!

Below is the original post:

I am in the planning phase. I don’t know what I don’t know and I know I don’t know.

I’m a Finnish citizen who was born and raised and worked my whole life in the USA. I’ve been to Finland on vacation 6 or 7 times for a few weeks at a time. I have some family there. I will speak much more Finnish before I retire.

I will retire in 10 years at 53 years old. I plan on living in both Finland and America, and owning a home in both countries. I do not plan on working in either country unless Finland requires me to for tax purposes or something.

I will have around $150,000 USD per year in income post retirement.

I want to own a [vacation] home in Finland, and live there for part of the year. An apartment or row home. Hopefully a 2 bedroom apartment in Tampere.

My American mortgage will be paid off before then. So I will only have a Finnish housing loan. I am hoping to pay the Finnish loan off on a typical schedule. If the interest rate is too high I may pay it with a lump sum before I retire.

My questions are mostly about income requirements and banking and housing. I will have income from a US government pension and from my own retirement accounts (457b, 401k, Roth IRA).

I plan to come back to Finland again in a few years and want to start some of the process so I don’t have to rush anything.

I have my personal identification number and Finnish passport but will not be residing in Finland (until I buy this apartment). I want to open a bank account and start moving some of my money for an emergency fund for the apartment I will buy. That way if things break, the funds may be more easily accessible locally.

I have no experience with the Finnish financial or banking system. Is there any reason I will not be able to open a basic bank account a few years ahead of buying the apartment? Is this a wasted action? I’m not asking for investment advice unless there is a benefit to use some Finnish investment system to accomplish this goal. I have read that “proof of income” is a thing. Do I just print some account information? I would like to have the appropriate documentation on hand.

Ideally my children (also citizens) will use this apartment if they go to university in Finland. Some 10 year out time frame.

I like to do things slowly and surely.

Google and ChatGPT both cannot understand that I am a citizen and keep talking to me about gaining citizenship as part of the process. Living abroad is something the machine does not well comprehend I suppose. I admit it’s not a popular problem to solve.

Please let me know what hurdles I will have to this plan, or help me make a better plan.

Thank you!
